A month page is evergreen: it describes what every January looks like on the international calendar, then lists the dated events of the next January with their status.
01Where the season is concentrated
January belongs to altitude and to the southern hemisphere. In the Alps the season that opened at Christmas settles into its long middle: St. Moritz, Gstaad and Courchevel are full, the Davos meeting turns a small Graubünden town into the most photographed conference room in the world for a week, and the racing calendar begins with the Lauberhorn in Wengen and the Hahnenkamm in Kitzbühel, the two downhills people travel for. At the same time Melbourne is the busiest tennis city on earth for a fortnight, Palm Beach opens its winter with the Cavallino Classic and the first weeks of the Winter Equestrian Festival in Wellington, and the fashion year starts in Florence, Milan and Paris with the men's shows and the January couture.
It is a month of two temperatures. The people who ski and the people who sail rarely overlap, and January is when the Caribbean charter season is at its fullest in St. Barts while the snow polo tournament is being built on the frozen lake at St. Moritz. Sundance, in its last Park City edition, adds a third pole in Utah.

04Important destinations
St. Moritz and Gstaad are at the center of the European winter, with Courchevel and Kitzbühel as the French and Austrian counterweights. Davos matters for one week and is otherwise a quiet ski town. Palm Beach and Wellington begin their winter, Aspen is in full season, Melbourne is the Asia-Pacific capital of the month, and St. Barts and Antigua carry the Caribbean.
05Geographic movement
The movement in January is vertical rather than horizontal: people go up to the mountains and stay there. The exceptions are the Australian Open, which draws a specific international crowd to Melbourne for two weeks, and the fashion sequence, which moves Florence–Milan–Paris in ten days and then back to Paris for couture. By the end of the month the Alps are still full and Palm Beach has taken over the American winter from Aspen's opening weeks.
06Weather
Alpine resorts are at their coldest and most reliable for snow; the Hahnenkamm has been cancelled or shortened for weather in the past, so the racing weekend can change shape. Melbourne can run above 35 °C during the Open, which has closed roofs and delayed play. Palm Beach and the Caribbean are dry and warm, the reason the season is there at all. Dubai and Abu Dhabi are at their most temperate.
07The most important weekends
The last full weekend of January is the densest: Hahnenkamm in Kitzbühel, the Snow Polo World Cup in St. Moritz and, in most years, the Australian Open finals fall within the same three days. The weekend that closes Davos usually carries the Lauberhorn as well.
08Where the season moves next
February keeps the Alps and moves the focus to the water and the fairs: White Turf on the frozen lake at St. Moritz, the women's fashion weeks starting in New York, the Berlinale, the first Palm Beach fair, the Miami boat show, and the Venice Carnival. The southern hemisphere's moment passes with the Australian Open; the Caribbean stays.
