Doha

Qatar's capital, building a racing and art calendar on its 2022 World Cup infrastructure.

A destination page is organised around time: when the place matters, which events make it matter, and how it changes across the year — then the practical geography (airports, marinas, neighborhoods, hotel areas).

Doha is Qatar's capital and by far its largest city, home to most of the country's roughly three million residents, the large majority of them foreign workers. Gas, not oil, built its modern wealth: the offshore North Field, shared with Iran and developed from the 1990s, is among the largest natural-gas reservoirs in the world, and the revenue funded the museums, stadiums and planned districts that now define the skyline. Doha hosted the 2022 FIFA World Cup, the first in the Middle East, building or renovating eight stadiums including Lusail Stadium in the new planned city just north of the capital, and much of the current events calendar exists to keep that infrastructure in use: a Formula 1 round at Lusail International Circuit under a long-term contract, and, from 2026, an Art Basel fair split between the M7 design centre and the Doha Design District.

03Why it matters

Like Abu Dhabi, Doha's calendar is state-built, but its specific project is converting a single mega-event's infrastructure into a recurring one: Lusail exists because of the World Cup, and Formula 1 and Art Basel are now the tools filling that city's calendar year-round. In our reading, Doha is the clearest test of whether a World Cup host can turn a month of global attention into a lasting annual fixture, rather than a stadium complex with nothing scheduled in it.

06Getting there and around

AirportsHamad International (DOH) · 12 km · commercial — Qatar's single major airport, opened in 2014 with two of the longest runways in commercial use.
Private aviationQatar Executive and Qatar Amiri Flight operate from a dedicated business-aviation facility at Hamad International itself, rather than a separate airport.
HelicopterCharter helicopter operators run scenic and transfer flights over the Corniche, The Pearl and Lusail; there is no scheduled shuttle service.
MarinasLusail Marina — the newest of Doha's marinas, part of the planned city built around the World Cup.The Pearl-Qatar — berths built into the artificial island's canals off West Bay.
Getting aroundThe Doha Metro, a driverless three-line network opened in 2019, covers West Bay, Msheireb and the airport, and a tram serves Lusail and Education City. Taxis, including the state-run Karwa fleet, and ride-hailing cover the rest; distances between districts favor a car or the metro over walking.

07Where things are

Neighborhoods

West Baythe modern skyline of towers and hotels along the northern Corniche.
The Pearl-Qataran artificial island of canals, marinas and low-rise apartment blocks.
Msheireb Downtowna redeveloped, car-free heritage quarter on the site of old Doha.
Souq Waqifa restored traditional market of stalls and restaurants beside the Corniche.
Lusailthe planned city north of Doha built around the World Cup, now home to its stadium and circuit.

Hotel areas

West Bay's towers hold the largest concentration of international hotel brands and set the tone for the city's business and event traffic. The Pearl-Qatar offers a lower-rise, marina-facing alternative, and Lusail's newer hotel stock serves Grand Prix and stadium visitors directly.

Dining districts

West Bay and The Pearl-Qatar carry the newest international restaurants; Souq Waqif keeps a lower-key, market-based register of Qatari and regional cooking.

Cultural institutions

Museum of Islamic Artdesigned by I. M. Pei, opened in 2008 on its own island off the Corniche.
National Museum of QatarJean Nouvel's 2019 building, its interlocking discs modeled on a desert rose crystal.
Katara Cultural Villagean arts and performance precinct opened in 2010 between West Bay and The Pearl.
M7a design and innovation centre in the Doha Design District, host of Art Basel Qatar.

Shopping

Villaggio, an indoor mall built around Venetian canals, and the restored stalls of Souq Waqif anchor two very different registers of Doha shopping; Lusail's Place Vendome adds a newer luxury-mall option north of the city.

08How the place changes

Doha follows the Gulf's inverted year: comfortable from roughly November to March, against an extreme summer from May to October when highs above 40C push life indoors. Its two tracked fixtures sit near either edge of the cool season, the Grand Prix in November and Art Basel Qatar in February, bookending the months when the Corniche is actually used.

09History

Doha was founded near the older settlement of Al Bidda in the 1820s and lived on pearling until the market collapsed after Japan's cultured-pearl industry emerged in the 1920s and 1930s. Oil exploration began in 1939, but Qatar's transformative wealth came later, from the offshore North Field gas reserve developed from the 1990s. Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, emir from 1995 to 2013, used that revenue to found Al Jazeera and Education City and to start Doha's museum-building. His son, the current emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, oversaw the 2022 World Cup and the Lusail development that followed from it.
