Four race days at Flemington across eight days in early November, built around a two-mile handicap that closes the state of Victoria for an afternoon.

The Melbourne Cup is a handicap over 3,200 metres — two miles in the old measure — run at Flemington on the first Tuesday in November. Being a handicap is the point: the weights bring the field together, which is why it produces close finishes and why it has drawn stayers from Ireland, England, France and Japan for thirty years. Prize money reached A$10 million in recent years, and Cup Day has been a public holiday across metropolitan Melbourne since 1876.
The Victoria Racing Club stages it as the centerpiece of a four-day carnival: Victoria Derby Day on the Saturday, the serious racing day; Cup Day on Tuesday; Oaks Day on Thursday, the traditional Ladies' Day; and Champions Stakes Day on the second Saturday. Flemington is a wide, flat, pear-shaped course along the Maribyrnong River four miles from the city, with rose gardens planted to flower for the carnival. Access runs from general admission on the lawns through reserved seating and the members' areas to the Birdcage, the marquee enclosure inside the track where corporate and brand hospitality is concentrated.
01Warum es relevant ist
No other horse race is a public holiday. That single fact explains the Melbourne Cup's standing better than any purse: a state stops work, and the race is watched in offices, schools and pubs by people with no other interest in racing. For the international industry it is the richest and most winnable two-mile handicap in the world, and the northern-hemisphere raid on it has reshaped how European stayers are campaigned. In our reading the carnival's structure is its real achievement — four days with genuinely different characters.
02Die Woche darum
Melbourne treats the carnival as a civic season. The Cup parade moves through the central business district on the Monday, free to watch; Federation Square and the laneway bars run Cup Day screens; restaurants build lunch service around the three o'clock start; and Cup Day, being a holiday, empties the offices.
03Anreisezeitpunkt
Arrive the Friday before Derby Day for the full carnival, or the Sunday if the plan is Cup Day alone. Derby Day is the better racing and the more comfortable crowd, Cup Day is the occasion. Leave on the Sunday after Stakes Day, or the Wednesday if you are only there for the Cup.
04Unterkunft
The central business district is the obvious base: it puts you on the Flemington train line, among the laneway restaurants and bars, and a tram ride from everything else, with the Windsor and the Hotel Lindrum as the period landmarks. Southbank and Docklands hold the larger modern hotels; East Melbourne and Carlton are quieter; St Kilda is half an hour out.
05Zugang und Hospitality
The VRC sells general admission for all four days, reserved grandstand seating, and a substantial hospitality programme. Its Members Lawn and Members Enclosure are tied to VRC membership, which carries a waiting list. The Birdcage is temporary marquees inside the track occupied by corporate hosts and sponsor brands, mostly invitation-only, though the club sells at least one publicly bookable Birdcage product each year.
06Wo das gesellschaftliche Geschehen stattfindet
The Flemington lawns and the Hill, the mounting yard before each race, the rose gardens, the grandstand terraces and the Birdcage lawn for those with access. Off course, the laneways off Flinders and Collins, the rooftop bars, Crown at Southbank and the pubs of Fitzroy and Carlton. The Cup parade on the Monday is free.

09Geschichte
The first Melbourne Cup was run on 7 November 1861 for 710 gold sovereigns and a hand-beaten gold watch; Archer won it, and again in 1862. It was shortened from two miles to 3,200 metres in 1972 when Australia went metric, and Cup Day became a Victorian public holiday in 1876. Jean Shrimpton's appearance in a short white shift in 1965, without hat, gloves or stockings, effectively created Fashions on the Field. Attendance peaked in 2003 at 122,736; the 2019 Cup drew 81,408.
10Wer ist dort
Australian and New Zealand owners, breeders and trainers; the international stayers' community, with Irish, British, French and Japanese connections campaigning horses specifically for the Cup; the Australian corporate sector, which occupies the Birdcage; the fashion and media industries; and a very large general public.
