Australian Grand Prix

Fecha pendiente · Albert Park Circuit

Formula 1 around the lake in Albert Park, usually the season opener and the best-attended weekend on the calendar.

Fechas Fecha pendienteThe 2027 Formula 1 calendar had not been published as of 6 September 2026, and the promoter's ticket pages were taking registrations for notification rather than publishing dates. No usable pattern exists to estimate from: recent editions have ranged from late March and early April to the first weekend of March. Melbourne's agreement runs to 2037 and requires the race to be one of the first three rounds of the season, so March remains the typical month.

Albert Park is a 5.3-kilometer loop of parkland roads around a lake five kilometers south of central Melbourne, assembled each year and taken apart afterward. Sixteen corners, most of them fast; the layout changed materially in 2022, when turns nine and ten were redesigned and the surface replaced for the first time since 1996.

The weekend is a four-day festival with gates open from Thursday. Attendance is the largest in the sport: a reported 483,934 across the 2026 weekend.

01Por qué es relevante

Melbourne holds the season's opening round in most years and has the largest paying audience in the sport. The promoter is a government corporation and the contract runs to 2037. In our reading it is the calendar's best example of a race that belongs to its city rather than its sponsors.

02La semana en torno al evento

Melbourne handles this without visible strain: the park closes progressively from late February, the trams keep running, and the suburbs carry on with a Grand Prix attached. In most years the weekend sits beside the Labour Day long weekend and the city's March festivals.

03Cuándo llegar

Thursday, when the gates open, leaving Monday or later. Melbourne rewards extra days and March is its best month.

04Dónde alojarse

The central business district is the default, ten minutes by tram and with the most rooms. Southbank and South Yarra are closer and quieter; St Kilda puts you on the beach at the circuit's southern end; Fitzroy is better for eating than commuting.

05Acceso y hospitalidad

The promoter publishes three categories: a park pass covering general admission, reserved grandstands, and hospitality, with Formula 1's Paddock Club alongside its own corporate products. General admission here is genuinely good, with mounded banks around most of the lap.

06Dónde tiene lugar la actividad social

Inside the park, the marquee village and the general admission banks along the lake; outside it, the CBD laneways, Southbank's riverside and the beachfront at St Kilda.

07Cómo llegar

Aviación comercialMelbourne Airport (MEL), about 25 km north, with long-haul service from Asia and the Gulf.
FerroviarioSuburban rail serves the city, not the park; trams along St Kilda Road pass the circuit.
AutomóvilDriving to the park is discouraged and parking is minimal.
Aviación privadaEssendon Fields (MEB), close to the city.
HelicópteroTransfers operate in race week; no public access at the circuit.
MarinasSt Kilda's marina sits near the circuit's southern end.

08Aspectos prácticos

VestimentaWarm-weather clothing with a layer for the evening and something waterproof, because Melbourne's weather changes without warning.
ClimaEarly March is late summer in Victoria: often warm and bright, occasionally very hot, and capable of dropping fifteen degrees within an hour.
Cómo desplazarseUse the trams and walk. The crowd disperses across a wide perimeter, which makes departures easier than at most Grands Prix.
HotelesRooms are obtainable, but the weekend often overlaps the long weekend and the March festivals, so rates rise and the best hotels go months ahead.
RestaurantesOne of the strongest restaurant cities in the region and booked out on Friday and Saturday; the laneway bars absorb walk-ins.
Momento de la reservaHotels two to three months ahead; restaurants three to four weeks; grandstands from the promoter's release.
EntradasSold by the Australian Grand Prix Corporation in three classes, park pass, grandstands and hospitality, with four-day and single-day options. In September 2026 the pages were taking registrations.
HospitalidadFormula 1's Paddock Club operates at Albert Park, and the promoter sells corporate marquee, suite and lounge products inside the park.

09Historia

The Australian Grand Prix dates from 1928 and a road race at Phillip Island. It joined the world championship in 1985 on a street circuit in Adelaide, which held it for eleven years, and moved to a rebuilt Albert Park in 1996. The contract was extended in 2022, twice, to 2037.

10Quién está ahí

An enormous domestic crowd, much of it on general admission; Melbourne's corporate sector in the marquee village; Asian and European visitors on a longer trip.
