No other sailing event puts this many boats on a single start line, and the record is not a marketing claim but a Guinness-certified one. Its scale comes specifically from openness: almost any seaworthy boat with a qualified crew can enter, which makes Barcolana as much a demonstration of how widely sailing is practiced around the northern Adriatic as a showcase for its most serious competitors, a genuinely different proposition from the invitation-only or class-restricted regattas that dominate the rest of the Mediterranean's yachting calendar.

Trieste in early-to-mid October is at the end of its own tourist season, and Barcolana brings a concentrated, city-wide event to a period that would otherwise be quiet. The Villaggio Barcolana occupies the waterfront from the beginning of October, and the preliminary regattas and side events fill the days leading up to the main Sunday race with activity on and off the water, drawing a mixed sailing and general public audience rather than only competitors.

The main race on the second Sunday is the event's focus and the best single day to be in Trieste; arriving a few days earlier allows time to see the Villaggio Barcolana and some of the preliminary regattas as well.

Entry to race is by registration with the organizer, open to a very wide range of boats and crews under the published Notice of Race. There is no admission charge to watch from Trieste's waterfront, the Barcola promenade or Piazza Unità d'Italia, and no ticket, since the race and the village are both free public events.

Piazza Unità d'Italia, one of the largest seafront squares in Europe, is the natural gathering point for the finish, while the Barcola waterfront promenade, several kilometers long, gives space for the crowds watching the start and the preliminary racing. The Villaggio Barcolana's stalls, stages and exhibitions run along the same stretch of waterfront through the days before the main race.

A group of sailing enthusiasts from the Società Vela Barcola e Grignano organized the first Barcolana in 1969, when 51 boats started; growth from that figure to the low thousands over the following half-century reflects both Trieste's own sailing culture and the race's deliberate openness to boats and sailors well outside the competitive elite. Guinness World Records recognized the race as the largest sailing regatta in the world by number of participants in 2019, cementing a reputation the race had built informally for decades before that.
