Tempistica tipicaodd-numbered years only, since the pandemic rescheduling: two professional pre-opening days in early May, then a public run of roughly six and a half months to late November. In even years the same buildings hold the International Art Exhibition instead
OrganizzatoreLa Biennale di Venezia · dal 1980

The Architecture Biennale uses exactly the buildings the art exhibition uses in even years, and the difference is entirely in what fills them. A curator, always a practising architect or theorist, mounts a thematic exhibition across the Arsenale's Corderie and the Central Pavilion in the Giardini, and participating countries mount their own shows in the permanent pavilions or in rented spaces around the city. The material is drawings, models, films and, increasingly, full-scale built prototypes, which makes the Arsenale in an architecture year the more physically ambitious of the two biennials. The 2025 edition, curated by Carlo Ratti, drew 66 national participations and more than 300 contributions from over 750 participants. The 2027 edition is directed by Wang Shu and Lu Wenyu of Amateur Architecture Studio, the first Chinese architects to lead it.

01Perché è rilevante

This is the profession's central public event and the place where architectural argument reaches an audience beyond architects. National pavilions are commissioned by ministries and cultural institutes and function as statements of policy as much as design; the Golden Lion for best national participation is the discipline's most visible prize.

Our reading is that the architecture edition is the better one to visit as an ordinary member of the public. It is less crowded than the art biennale, the work is generally more explicable, and the Arsenale's built installations reward walking through rather than looking at.

02La settimana intorno all'evento

The May pre-opening brings the international profession to Venice at once: national commissioners, school deans, practice principals and the architectural press, plus the manufacturers and engineering firms that sponsor pavilions. The city pavilions, fifteen of them in 2025, are scattered through palazzi and warehouses, which is why the week involves so much walking; collateral events fill scuole and churches. The permanent institutions program alongside, as they do for the art edition: Palazzo Grassi and Punta della Dogana, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection and the Fondazione Giorgio Cini on San Giorgio Maggiore. Venice fills for those two days and then returns to normal.

03Quando arrivare

For the pre-opening, arrive the evening before and stay two or three nights; accreditation is required. For an ordinary visit, two full days is right, one for the Arsenale and one for the Giardini, with the city pavilions absorbing a third. September and October are the best months of the run.

04Dove alloggiare

The same geography as the art biennale. Castello is closest to both main sites and the least touristed central sestiere. San Marco is central and expensive; Dorsoduro is quieter and near the Guggenheim; Cannaregio offers the best value with real residential life. Because the architecture pre-opening is smaller than the art one, central hotels are markedly easier to book in an odd year.

05Accesso e ospitalità

During the run the exhibition is fully public. One ticket admits to both the Giardini and the Arsenale, sold at each entrance and on labiennale.org, with reduced rates for students and free admission for children; the organizer publishes prices each edition and they are not reproduced here. Most national pavilions in the city and most collateral events are free. The two pre-opening days operate on accreditation applied for through La Biennale rather than on sold tickets.

06Dove si svolge l'attività sociale

The Corderie exit at the Arsenale and the Giardini's café are the daytime meeting points, and the walk along the Riva degli Schiavoni between them is where most of the week's conversations happen. In the evening the profession disperses into the bacari of Castello and Cannaregio, the Zattere in Dorsoduro, and the courtyards of whichever palazzi are hosting collateral exhibitions. The architecture week is noticeably more open-door than the art vernissage.

07Come arrivare

Aviazione commercialeVenice Marco Polo (VCE) at Tessera, with Alilaguna water buses to San Marco in about 75 minutes, private water taxis in about 30 and land buses to Piazzale Roma in 20. Treviso (TSF) serves low-cost carriers 40 minutes away.
TrenoVenezia Santa Lucia takes high-speed services from Milan in about two and a half hours, Florence in two and Rome in under four, with direct international trains from Vienna and Munich. Venezia Mestre on the mainland is the cheaper base.
AutoCars stop at Piazzale Roma or the Tronchetto. Vaporetto lines 1 and 2 and the seasonal 4.1 and 5.1 serve the Giardini and Arsenale stops.
Aviazione privataVenice Marco Polo has a business aviation terminal; Treviso and Verona take the overflow. Pressure during the two pre-opening days is lower than for the art biennale.
ElicotteroCharter transfers to Marco Polo and the Lido only; landing in the historic centre is not permitted.
MarineMarina Santelena in Castello is closest to the Giardini, with Venezia Certosa Marina and the Lido berths also in use. Large vessels anchor off the Lido.

08Aspetti pratici

AbbigliamentoArchitects dress like architects and Venice punishes bad shoes. Flat, comfortable footwear, dark and practical clothing, and something waterproof: much of the Arsenale is unheated and the walk between sites is long and outdoors. Churches require covered shoulders.
MeteoEarly May in Venice is mild, with daytime highs typically around twenty Celsius and cool evenings. The Arsenale's brick halls stay cold. September and October are the best months of the run; from late October acqua alta becomes possible. Description is qualitative; no station normals were sourced.
Come spostarsiEverything is on foot or by vaporetto; lines 1 and 2 serve the Giardini and Arsenale stops and a multi-day pass is worth buying on arrival. Water taxis are expensive and heavily booked during the pre-opening. Venice charges a day-visitor access fee on designated days, which affects those not staying overnight.
HotelCentral hotels rise for the two pre-opening days but nothing like the art biennale's peak, and rooms are generally findable a month or two ahead. During the six-month run, ordinary Venetian seasonality applies: high in June and September, low in November.
RistorantiBookings in Castello and San Marco tighten for the pre-opening and pavilion sponsors take private rooms. The bacari take no reservations and are where most of the profession eats between openings. During the run, normal Venetian booking rules apply.
Tempistiche di prenotazioneHotels two to three months ahead for the pre-opening, four to six weeks for the rest of the run. Restaurants three to four weeks for the opening days. Tickets can be bought at the gate throughout the run.
BigliettiA single ticket admits to both the Giardini and the Arsenale and is sold at both entrances and on labiennale.org, with published reductions for students and young visitors. The organizer sets prices each edition and they are not stated here. The city pavilions and most collateral events are free. The Venetian foundations charge separate admission.
OspitalitàThere is no purchasable hospitality tier. The two pre-opening days operate on accreditation granted by La Biennale to press and professionals. Receptions and dinners around them are hosted by national participations, foundations and sponsoring manufacturers on their own invitation lists. La Biennale hosts the awards ceremony, at which the Golden Lion for best national participation is presented.

09Storia

Architecture entered La Biennale's programme in 1975 and the first full International Architecture Exhibition was held in 1980, with Paolo Portoghesi's Strada Novissima in the Corderie, a street of facades by twenty architects that remains the most cited installation in its history. It settled into a biennial rhythm before the pandemic postponements of 2020 and 2021 shifted architecture to odd years and art to even. La Biennale became a foundation in 2004 and now runs six departments; architecture and art share the same two venues.

10Chi è presente

Architects and engineers in the largest concentration of any public event in the discipline, with national commissioners and cultural institute staff, deans and students from schools across Europe and Asia, the architectural and design press, and the manufacturers and consultancies that underwrite pavilions. During the run, a general public that is younger and more student-heavy than the art biennale's.
