Monaco is a sovereign city-state on the French Riviera, ruled by the House of Grimaldi since 1297 and bordered on three sides by France. It covers barely two square kilometers and holds roughly 38,000 residents, which makes it the most densely populated country in the world; fewer than a quarter of them are Monégasque nationals. The abolition of income tax in 1869, paired with the legalization of gambling that built the Casino de Monte-Carlo, set the template the principality has followed since: a resident and visitor economy organized around low taxation, a compact and heavily serviced coastline, and a public calendar dense enough that several industries treat it as a fixed annual stop.
That calendar is unusually concentrated for such a small place. Motor racing supplies its best-known weeks — the Formula 1 Grand Prix, run through the harbor and hillside streets since 1929, plus the Formula E E-Prix, a biennial Historic Grand Prix and the January Rallye Monte-Carlo that opens the World Rally Championship season. Tennis follows in April with the Monte-Carlo Masters, played just over the French border. Yachting supplies the year's other pole: the Monaco Yacht Show each September, when Port Hercule fills stern-to with superyachts for four days. Around these sit smaller, older fixtures — the Bal de la Rose and the Monaco Red Cross Gala among them — that belong to the principality's own philanthropic season rather than to any international sporting circuit.
Little of this shows on an ordinary week. Outside its event calendar Monaco runs quietly: a small, wealthy municipality of museums, a working harbor, and a hillside of apartment towers, with tourism concentrated in a handful of set-piece months rather than spread evenly across the year.

03Por qué es relevante
Monaco's claim on the international calendar rests on the coincidence of several separate industries' marquee fixtures inside one small territory: motorsport's most prestigious street race, one of tennis's eight Masters 1000 events, and the yachting industry's central commercial week all use Monaco as their venue, none because of any inherent link to each other. In our reading, what actually holds the calendar together is the 1956 marriage of Prince Rainier III to Grace Kelly, which fixed Monaco's image in global media a full generation before the current event calendar took its modern shape, and that image is what each of these separate industries is still renting when it books the principality for a week.

Barrios
Zonas del hotel
The grand hotels around Place du Casino in Monte Carlo, several of them Belle Époque landmarks in their own right, define the traditional address for Grand Prix and Yacht Show visitors and set the tone for booking pressure across the whole principality in those weeks. Larvotto and Fontvieille offer a newer, quieter register closer to the beach and the marina respectively. Because Monaco's stock of rooms is small relative to demand in its peak weeks, that pressure is felt principality-wide rather than in any one quarter, and spills into hotels along the neighboring French coast.
Zonas gastronómicas
Port Hercule's quayside and the streets around Place du Casino carry the most visible restaurant terraces, busiest during the Grand Prix and Yacht Show. Monaco-Ville keeps a smaller, more local register of traditional Monégasque cooking. Larvotto's beach clubs open for the summer season and close again in autumn.
Instituciones culturales
Compras
The Metropole Shopping Center and the boutiques along avenue des Beaux-Arts and avenue de Monte-Carlo, all within walking distance of Place du Casino, hold the principality's concentration of designer flagship stores; smaller boutiques line the harbor front in La Condamine.
08Cómo cambia el lugar
Monaco's year alternates sharply between quiet civic routine and short, intensely booked event weeks. February, August and November are its calmest months; April, June and September carry its three major fixtures, each of which visibly rebuilds part of the principality's public space — grandstands on the streets for the Grand Prix, a display dock at Port Hercule for the Yacht Show — before dismantling it again within days.
09Historia
The House of Grimaldi has held Monaco since 1297, when Francesco Grimaldi is said to have seized the fortress on the Rock disguised as a Franciscan friar. Monaco's independence was recognized by France in an 1861 treaty, and its modern economic model dates from 1869, when Prince Charles III abolished income tax for residents in tandem with legalizing the gambling that built the Casino de Monte-Carlo, the quarter that still carries his name. Rail links to Paris and the Belle Époque hotel building that followed turned the principality into a winter resort for European aristocracy well before the motor car existed. Prince Rainier III's 1956 marriage to the American actress Grace Kelly brought a new order of global media attention that has shaped Monaco's public image since. Land reclamation at Fontvieille in the late twentieth century and, more recently, at Le Portier, has been the principality's main answer to having almost no land left to build on. Prince Albert II has reigned since 2005.
