The American summer runs from the mountains to the shore and back. It opens in Aspen in the middle of June with the Food & Wine Classic and continues there with the Aspen Ideas Festival at the end of the month and the music festival through July and August. Sun Valley's conference in the second week of July is the summer's one gathering that the rest of the world watches. Saratoga's racing meet runs from mid-July to Labor Day with the Travers at the end of August; the Hamptons fill from the Fourth of July and have the Hampton Classic Horse Show as their fixed event over the last week of August; Newport's summer ends with its boat show in September. Monterey Car Week and the Pebble Beach Concours in the third week of August are the summer's largest single fixture and the one that draws the international crowd.
The season closes in New York: the US Open from the last week of August, New York Fashion Week immediately after, and Telluride's film festival over Labor Day weekend in Colorado as the hinge between summer and the autumn festival run. The US Open golf in June and the Tribeca Festival are the early fixtures in the same two cities.

June is Aspen's month. The Food & Wine Classic occupies the third weekend, the Ideas Festival the last week, and the music festival's first concerts overlap the Ideas sessions in the tent at the end of the month; the US Open golf, on a rotating course, is the same third week, and Tribeca runs in New York in the first half of the month. July moves to Sun Valley for the conference in its second week, to Saratoga for the opening of the meet, to the Hamptons and Newport for the shore, and to the Aspen Music Festival's eight weeks. There are few fixed dates in July; the movement is to the places.
August has the summer's densest fortnight. Monterey Car Week runs the whole third week of the month, from the early auctions and the Quail on the Friday to the Pebble Beach Concours on the Sunday; the Travers Stakes at Saratoga is the following Saturday or the one after; the Hampton Classic runs from the last Sunday of August through Labor Day weekend; the US Open begins in Flushing Meadows on the last Monday of August. By the first week of September the summer is over: Telluride over Labor Day, New York Fashion Week from the second week, and the Newport boat show in mid-September as the shore's last event before the Audrain Concours in October.

Aspen and Sun Valley in June and July are warm by day, cool at night and prone to afternoon thunderstorms, and the altitude is felt by visitors from sea level. The Hamptons and Newport are at their best from late June to early September, warm and humid with sea breezes, with the hurricane season's first storms a risk from mid-August. Saratoga in July and August is hot and humid. Monterey in August is cool and often foggy in the mornings, with the fog burning off the 18th fairway by the time the concours judging begins, and a jacket is usual. New York at the start of the US Open is hot and humid, and the tournament's night sessions exist partly for that reason.

The autumn begins in the first week of September with Venice, Telluride, Toronto and the US Open running together, and New York Fashion Week a week later. The American calendar's next fixed points are the Audrain Newport Concours in early October, the United States Grand Prix in Austin later that month, the Breeders' Cup in early November and Art Basel Miami Beach in December. The mountain resorts reopen for skiing in the third week of December.
