How the Mediterranean Season Actually Moves

The coast fills from west to east and back again, and the yachts explain most of it. A month-by-month reading of the summer from the Riviera to Mykonos.

The Mediterranean season is usually described as a place — the coast, the islands — when it is really a schedule. It opens in Cannes in mid-May, moves to Monaco for the Grand Prix in the first days of June, spends the middle of June racing off Saint-Tropez and Porto Cervo, disappears into the islands for July and August, reconvenes at the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup in Sardinia in the first week of September, and ends where it began, on the Riviera, with the Cannes Yachting Festival, the Monaco Yacht Show and Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez in the last two weeks of September and the first of October.

The yachts are the reason the schedule exists. A charter or private boat that spends the winter in the Caribbean crosses in May, is on the Riviera for the Grand Prix, and then spends the summer working east along a route that has not changed much in forty years: Saint-Tropez, Corsica, the Costa Smeralda, the Amalfi Coast and Capri, then either the Ionian and the Cyclades or back west to the Balearics. The regattas mark the points where the fleet gathers.

May and June: the Riviera

Cannes in the second half of May is the season's overture, and the film festival is only part of it: the same fortnight holds the amfAR gala at Cap d'Antibes, the Geneva watch auctions across the border and, in even years, the Monaco Historic Grand Prix. Monaco's Grand Prix follows in the first week of June and the Rolex Giraglia — the offshore race from Saint-Tropez to Genoa via the Giraglia rock — in the second or third. Porto Cervo's Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta in early June is the Costa Smeralda's first week of the year; Palma's Superyacht Cup in late June is the Balearics'.

Ibiza has opened by then. Its clubs announce opening dates in late April and May, and the island is full by mid-June; Mallorca's season follows the same curve with less noise. Mykonos opens later, in June, and stays open into October.

July and August: the islands

From the first days of July the calendar goes quiet and the coast goes full. Capri, the Amalfi Coast, the Costa Smeralda, Ibiza, Mykonos: there is almost nothing to list and nowhere to book. Venice's Redentore on the third weekend of July, the Palio's two runnings in Siena on the 2nd of July and the 16th of August, the Ravello Festival above Amalfi and the Salzburg Festival in the Alps behind the coast are the exceptions, and even they are excuses more than destinations. August is the one month of the year in which the international calendar is a place rather than a list.

The mistral and the meltemi — the two summer winds, one on the French coast and one in the Aegean — are the season's only real weather, and the sea reaches its warmest in the second half of August.

September: the return

The Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup at Porto Cervo in the first full week of September is where the season reconvenes: the largest sailing yachts in the Mediterranean, racing off the Costa Smeralda in the best conditions of the year. The Rolex Swan Cup joins it in even years. From Sardinia the fleet moves to the Riviera for the Cannes Yachting Festival in the second week, the Monaco Yacht Show in the last, and Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez at the turn of the month — the regatta that is also the coast's farewell party. Milan Fashion Week and the Italian Grand Prix at Monza are a two-hour drive from Monaco in the same fortnight, which is the Mediterranean's most useful overlap.

Then the boats go west — to Palma for the winter yards, to Fort Lauderdale's show at the end of October, across the Atlantic to Antigua by December — and the coast closes. Saint-Tropez in the first week of October is the last week the season can still be found there.
