MACO 2022 GENERALES59, Zona Maco

Zona Maco fills Centro Citibanamex, a convention centre in the west of Mexico City, for five days in early February. It is the largest art fair in Latin America, with more than 200 galleries in 2026, and its structure is broader than most contemporary fairs: alongside the main contemporary section and its Ejes, Sur and Arte Moderno strands, it runs separate divisions for design, for photography, for antiques through the Salón del Anticuario, and for books. That breadth is the fair's character. A visitor moves from a contemporary booth to a case of colonial silver to a mid-century Mexican furniture stand in a few minutes, and the design section has become a destination for buyers who would not otherwise attend an art fair.

01Warum es relevant ist

Zona Maco established that a serious international fair could work in Latin America, and it did so by building on a domestic collector base rather than importing one. It draws the region's galleries, from Buenos Aires, São Paulo, Bogotá, Lima and Guadalajara, with a substantial American, Spanish and northern European contingent.

Our reading is that the week's value has outgrown the fair. Mexico City in February is one of the most rewarding art weeks anywhere, because the city's museums, its modernist architecture and its own gallery scene are extraordinary. The fair is the excuse; the city is the event.

02Die Woche darum

Mexico City Art Week now runs to several fairs and dozens of openings. Material Art Fair, the young-gallery counterpart, and Salón ACME, staged in a disused house in Colonia Juárez, are the two essential satellites and both are more interesting to walk through than the main fair. Galleries in Juárez, Roma Norte, San Miguel Chapultepec and Polanco hold openings across the week. The institutions are the real reason to come: Museo Jumex and Museo Soumaya stand next to each other in Polanco, the Museo Tamayo and the Museo Nacional de Antropología are in Chapultepec park, and the Casa Luis Barragán in Tacubaya is bookable in advance and the single best thing to see in the city.

03Anreisezeitpunkt

Tuesday, so that Wednesday evening's opening is not the first thing you do after a flight. The fair itself takes one day. Give the rest of the week to the city: one day for Chapultepec and the museums, one for the southern houses, and reserve the Barragán house well ahead because entry is by timed booking.

04Unterkunft

Roma Norte and Condesa are where most international visitors stay: tree-lined, walkable, full of restaurants and close to the galleries, though about half an hour from the fair. Colonia Juárez is closer to the satellite fairs. Polanco is the most expensive and closest to Centro Citibanamex, the Jumex and the Soumaya. The Centro Histórico is the most interesting to walk and the least convenient for the fair.

05Zugang und Hospitality

Zona Maco sells single-day and multi-day tickets through its website and at the venue, and admission covers all of the fair's divisions. The organizer publishes prices in Mexican pesos each year and they are not reproduced here. The Wednesday evening opening is a preview distributed through galleries and the fair's own list. The satellite fairs sell their own inexpensive tickets, almost all of the city's gallery openings are free, and the Casa Luis Barragán requires an advance booking and charges its own admission.

06Wo das gesellschaftliche Geschehen stattfindet

Centro Citibanamex is a convention centre in a part of the city with nothing around it, so the social geography of the week is entirely elsewhere. The evening moves to Roma Norte and Juárez: the bars and restaurants around Colima, Orizaba and Havre streets, the terraces on Álvaro Obregón, and the courtyards of the houses the smaller fairs occupy. Condesa's Parque México takes the later crowd. Mexico City eats late; nothing serious starts before nine.

07Anreise

LinienluftfahrtBenito Juárez International (MEX) is the main gateway, 30 to 60 minutes from Roma and Polanco depending on traffic. Felipe Ángeles (NLU), north of the city, handles a growing share of domestic and some international traffic and is considerably further out. Toluca (TLC) is the third option.
BahnThere is no useful intercity passenger rail to Mexico City. Within the city, the Metro is extensive and very cheap but does not serve Centro Citibanamex directly; the Metrobús lines along Insurgentes and Reforma are more useful to visitors.
AutoTraffic is the defining constraint of the week and journeys across the city can take an hour or more. Ride-hailing is cheap and reliable and is what almost everyone uses. Driving oneself is not advisable; parking near the fair is organized but the roads around it are congested.
PrivatluftfahrtToluca International is the principal business aviation airport for Mexico City, about an hour west of the centre by road; Felipe Ángeles also takes private movements. Benito Juárez has limited general aviation capacity.
HubschrauberHelicopter transfers between Toluca and rooftop helipads in Polanco, Santa Fe and Reforma are established in Mexico City and are used during the week to avoid traffic.

08Praktische Hinweise

KleidungRelaxed and well cut. Mexico City in February is warm in the sun and cold after dark at 2,240 metres, so layers are essential and a jacket is needed every evening. Walking shoes matter: Roma and Condesa are best seen on foot and the pavements are uneven.
WetterFebruary is the dry season and among the pleasantest months: bright days with highs typically around twenty-two to twenty-four Celsius, and cold nights near eight, a consequence of the city's altitude. Rain is unlikely. Air quality can be poor in the dry months. Description is qualitative; no station normals were sourced.
Vor Ort navigierenRide-hailing is inexpensive and the standard way to move; allow far more time than the distance suggests, particularly between the fair and the southern neighbourhoods. The Metrobús along Insurgentes is faster than a car at rush hour. Altitude affects visitors on the first day or two, and walking uphill in Chapultepec is more tiring than expected.
HotelsRoma, Condesa, Juárez and Polanco tighten considerably for art week and rates rise, though Mexico City remains inexpensive by comparison with other fair cities. Booking six to eight weeks ahead is comfortable. The Centro Historico and the south hold availability longest.
RestaurantsThe best-known restaurants in Roma, Polanco and Juárez are booked out months ahead in art week and several run private buyouts. Mexico City's extraordinary depth of markets, fondas and street food means this matters less than it would elsewhere. For the marquee kitchens, book as early as you book the flight.
ReservierungszeitpunktHotels six to eight weeks ahead. The best-known restaurants two to three months. Casa Luis Barragán several weeks ahead through its own booking system. Fair tickets are sold online in advance and at the door.
TicketsSingle-day and multi-day tickets are sold on the fair's website and at Centro Citibanamex, and cover all of the fair's divisions. Prices are published in Mexican pesos each year and are not reproduced here because they were not verified against the organizer's page for this record. Satellite fairs including Material Art Fair and Salón ACME sell their own separate and generally inexpensive tickets, and most gallery openings across the city are free.
HospitalityThe Wednesday evening opening is the fair's preview and is distributed through exhibiting galleries and the fair's own list rather than sold as a general ticket. Corporate hospitality is modest by international fair standards. Most of the week's programme of dinners and parties is generated by galleries, collectors' foundations and the satellite fairs rather than by Zona Maco, and is invitation-based; the museums and the gallery openings are the substantial public alternative.

09Geschichte

Zelika García founded the fair in Monterrey in 2002 and moved it to Mexico City in 2004, where it took the Zona Maco name. It grew through the 2010s alongside a wider expansion of Mexican contemporary art institutions and by the 2020s had become the region's dominant fair. The design and antiques sections were added as separate divisions, giving it a range no purely contemporary event has.

10Wer ist dort

Mexican collectors in the largest numbers, with strong representation from Brazil, Argentina, Colombia and Peru; American collectors and advisers, for whom Mexico City is a short flight; European galleries testing the region; museum and foundation staff from across Latin America; and a large local public, since the fair is a mainstream cultural event in the city. Design buyers form a distinct audience of their own here.
