Chicago's April art fair, held in Navy Pier's Festival Hall with the city's museums and neighbourhood galleries programming around it.

Date PrevistoNot yet announced. Recent editions have generally fallen on a Thursday-to-Sunday run in the second week of April at Navy Pier (2023: 13-16 April; 2026: 9-12 April), though 2025 was an outlier in the last week of the month. On the second-week pattern 2027 falls on 8-11 April. Frieze has not published a 2027 date, and the 2025 exception means this estimate should be treated as provisional.

EXPO CHICAGO fills Festival Hall at the end of Navy Pier, a nineteenth-century lakefront pier that runs almost a kilometre into Lake Michigan, with something over 130 galleries for four days in April. It is the largest art fair in the American Midwest and the only one that draws a genuinely national dealer list outside New York, Los Angeles and Miami. The structure has stayed consistent: a main gallery floor, a section for younger galleries, curated solo and thematic presentations, and large-scale installations placed through the hall. A talks strand runs across the four days, and the fair extends into the city with public projects and free neighbourhood evening programmes. The Thursday opens with the Vernissage, a preview evening that in Chicago functions as a civic occasion as much as a trade one.

01Perché è rilevante

Chicago has the Art Institute, a serious contemporary museum, three major university art programmes and a gallery scene spread across the West Loop, Pilsen and the South Side, and for a decade after Art Chicago collapsed it had no fair to gather them. EXPO restored that, and Frieze's 2023 acquisition attached it to an international network.

Our reading is that this is the most civic of the American fairs. Its programming reaches into neighbourhoods other fairs never touch, and its audience is substantially local. It is not a fair people cross oceans for, and it does not pretend to be.

02La settimana intorno all'evento

EXPO Art Week extends the fair across the city and is the better part of it. The Art Institute of Chicago on Michigan Avenue and the Museum of Contemporary Art a few minutes from Navy Pier both program to the week, as do the Smart Museum and the Renaissance Society at the University of Chicago, Wrightwood 659 and the Arts Club of Chicago. Designated neighbourhood evenings send visitors to the West Town and West Loop galleries, to Pilsen and to the South Side. Navy Pier itself is a public amusement pier, so the fair's immediate surroundings are family tourism rather than art. Central hotel rates rise only modestly; this is the least pressured of the American fair weeks.

03Quando arrivare

Wednesday if you have a Vernissage ticket; the Thursday evening opening is the week's principal event. On a general ticket, Friday is the best day at the pier. Give at least one full day to the city rather than the fair: the Art Institute alone justifies it, and the neighbourhood gallery evenings are where Chicago's own scene is visible.

04Dove alloggiare

Streeterville and the Magnificent Mile put Navy Pier within a fifteen-minute walk and hold the greatest concentration of hotels in the city. The Loop is a short ride away and closest to the Art Institute. River North has the older gallery district and the densest restaurant strip. The West Loop is where the contemporary galleries and the best-known restaurants now are, about fifteen minutes from the pier by car.

05Accesso e ospitalità

The fair sells single-day and multi-day tickets and a separate, higher-priced ticket for the Thursday Vernissage preview evening, all through its own website; the organizer publishes current prices each year and they are not reproduced here. Unlike most fairs on this circuit, the opening preview is purchasable rather than purely invitational, which makes EXPO one of the more genuinely open fairs of the year. The talks programme is included with admission, and the neighbourhood gallery evenings and public installations across the city are free.

06Dove si svolge l'attività sociale

Navy Pier's promenade and beer gardens carry the immediate post-fair crowd, and the Ferris wheel and lakefront make it an unusually pleasant place to leave a convention hall into. In the evening the movement is inland: River North's restaurants and older galleries, the West Loop's Randolph Street restaurant row and its gallery buildings, and Pilsen's 18th Street on its designated night. The Arts Club of Chicago and the Museum of Contemporary Art's own bar are the reliable meeting points closer to the pier.

07Come arrivare

Aviazione commercialeO'Hare (ORD) is 45 minutes to an hour from downtown by road and about 45 minutes on the Blue Line. Midway (MDW) is closer, about 30 minutes by road and on the Orange Line, and handles more domestic point-to-point traffic.
TrenoUnion Station downtown handles Amtrak's long-distance and Midwest services, including the Chicago-Detroit, Chicago-St Louis and Chicago-Milwaukee corridors. Metra commuter lines serve the suburbs. Navy Pier has no rail station; the Grand Avenue stop on the Red Line is a fifteen-minute walk or short bus ride away.
AutoLake Shore Drive runs past Navy Pier and parking garages serve it directly, though they fill during the fair. Downtown driving is manageable outside rush hour. The pier is walkable from Streeterville and the Magnificent Mile.
Aviazione privataChicago Executive in Wheeling and DuPage Airport in West Chicago handle most business aviation, both about 40 minutes from downtown; Midway also takes private movements and is closer.
ElicotteroChicago has limited public heliport capacity and charter transfers are uncommon for this fair; ground transport from either airport is straightforward.
MarineDuSable Harbor and Monroe Harbor sit immediately south of Navy Pier and Burnham Harbor further along the lakefront; Great Lakes cruising boats berth there, though the season is short and April is early.

08Aspetti pratici

AbbigliamentoPractical and unfussy. April in Chicago is cold and windy off the lake, and Navy Pier is fully exposed, so a proper coat matters more than anything. The Vernissage is the dressiest evening of the week without being formal.
MeteoEarly to mid-April in Chicago is cold and changeable, with daytime highs typically around ten to thirteen Celsius, near-freezing nights, strong wind off Lake Michigan and a real chance of rain or late snow. Navy Pier is entirely exposed. Description is qualitative; no station normals were sourced.
Come spostarsiNavy Pier is a fifteen-minute walk from the Magnificent Mile and served by city buses along Illinois and Grand Avenues; the nearest L station is Grand on the Red Line. Ride-hailing to the pier backs up at fair closing. Chicago's grid makes driving between the pier, the West Loop and Pilsen straightforward outside rush hour.
HotelThe least pressured hotel market of any fair on this circuit. Chicago's downtown supply is large and rates rise only modestly for the fair; rooms are available a couple of weeks out in most years. Streeterville fills first because of the walking distance.
RistorantiThe West Loop's Randolph Street restaurants are the hardest bookings in the city and tighten further during the fair; four to six weeks ahead is sensible for those. River North and Streeterville are easier and take walk-ins. Chicago's dining depth means the fair week is not a constraint.
Tempistiche di prenotazioneHotels two to four weeks ahead is usually sufficient. Restaurants four to six weeks for the West Loop, one to two weeks elsewhere. Tickets, including the Vernissage, are sold online in advance and at the door.
BigliettiSingle-day and multi-day tickets and a separate opening-night Vernissage ticket are sold on the fair's website and at Navy Pier. The organizer publishes prices each year; they are not reproduced here because they were not verified against an organizer page for this record. The talks programme is included with admission, and the neighbourhood gallery evenings and citywide public installations during EXPO Art Week are free.
OspitalitàEXPO is unusual on this circuit in selling its preview rather than restricting it to invitation, which makes the opening evening accessible to anyone willing to pay for it. Beyond that, hospitality is partner-run and modest. The museum and university institutions run their own programmes during EXPO Art Week, several of which are free and open.

09Storia

Chicago had the first modern art fair in North America: Art Chicago, founded by the print dealer John Wilson, opened in May 1980 and was the country's leading fair for twentieth-century art through the 1990s. It declined in the 2000s as Art Basel Miami Beach took its position and was cancelled after the 2011 edition. Tony Karman relaunched it as EXPO CHICAGO at Navy Pier in 2012. The fair was cancelled in 2020 and returned in 2021; Frieze acquired it, along with The Armory Show, in July 2023. Attendance has run at roughly 40,000.

10Chi è presente

Chicago and Midwestern collectors in the greatest numbers, with East and West Coast galleries and a smaller international dealer contingent; museum curators and trustees from the Art Institute, the MCA and the university museums; a substantial university and student audience; and a large general Chicago public across the weekend. This is the most locally weighted of the American fairs.
