The Mostra is one of the six standing sectors of La Biennale di Venezia, alongside art, architecture, dance, music and theater, and it has run since 1932, which makes it the oldest film festival anywhere. It takes place not in Venice proper but on the Lido, the long sandbar that shelters the lagoon, about twenty minutes from San Marco by public waterbus. Everything happens within a few hundred meters of the Lungomare Marconi: the Palazzo del Cinema of 1937 with the 1,000-seat Sala Grande at its center, the Sala Darsena beside it, the PalaBiennale, the Sala Giardino, and the Hotel Excelsior, whose ground floor becomes the Venice Production Bridge market for the duration.

The program is smaller and more legible than Cannes's. Around twenty films compete in Venezia for the Golden Lion, with the Silver Lion for direction, the Volpi Cups for acting and the Mastroianni Award for a young performer decided by the same jury. Orizzonti carries newer and more formally adventurous work, Venice Classics shows restorations, Venice Immersive occupies a separate island for extended-reality projects, and Biennale College Cinema funds and premieres microbudget features. Two parallel sections run under their own management: Giornate degli Autori, founded in 2004 by Italian directors on the Cannes Fortnight model, and the Settimana Internazionale della Critica.

For a visitor the Lido during the Mostra is a strange and rather pleasant hybrid: a beach resort in its last warm fortnight, with cinemas in it. Ticket holders and badge holders queue on the same pavement; families cycle past the red carpet an hour before a premiere; the bathing huts on the Excelsior's beach are still in use. Unlike most festivals of its rank, the Mostra sells tickets to the general public — single seats and passes, bought online and at Lido box offices — so an ordinary visitor can see competition titles alongside the trade, which changes the temperature of the whole event.

01Por qué es relevante

Venice sets the terms of the autumn. Its calendar position, immediately before Telluride and Toronto and roughly six months ahead of the Academy Awards, has made it the place where studios and streamers choose to launch films they intend to campaign, and the trade press now treats the Lido premieres in the first week of September as the awards season's opening bell. A run of Golden Lion and Venice-premiered titles going on to Academy recognition over the past decade turned what was once a critics' festival into a strategic one.

The second reason is institutional. As a Biennale sector the Mostra sits inside a body that also runs the art and architecture exhibitions, and it inherits their seriousness about programming and their indifference to market noise. In our reading the Mostra is the most watchable of the major festivals: the competition is short enough to follow in full, the geography is small enough to walk, and because tickets are sold to the public the audience in the Sala Grande is not composed entirely of people who are working.

02La semana en torno al evento

The Lido changes completely and Venice barely notices. On the island, the Lungomare Marconi is fenced and screened, the vaporetto stops at Santa Maria Elisabetta and Lido Casinò run at capacity, and the strip of hotels and beach clubs along the seafront turns into a working village of production offices, press rooms and sponsor terraces. Bicycles are the local transport and the queue for a rented one on the first Saturday is long. Across the lagoon, the historic center carries on with its own September: in Art Biennale years the exhibitions in the Giardini and the Arsenale are open throughout, which gives film visitors a second reason to cross the water, and the Regata Storica on the Grand Canal falls on the first Sunday in September, usually inside the festival's first weekend.

The practical consequence is a divided city. People with badges tend to stay on the Lido and rarely cross; people who came for Venice stay in Cannaregio, Dorsoduro or San Marco and take the boat out for screenings. The last vaporetto back from the Lido after a late premiere is the single most consequential logistical fact of the fortnight, and the reason the Lido's own bars stay busy well past midnight.

03Cuándo llegar

The opening Wednesday and the first weekend hold the largest premieres and most of the press activity; the market at the Excelsior works hardest in the first five days. If the object is to see films in the Sala Grande with the least friction, the second Monday through Thursday is quieter and tickets are easier. Arriving on the Tuesday before opening gives time to collect a badge or passes and to work out the boat timetable before it matters. Staying through the closing Saturday is worth it only if you want the awards; most of the industry has left by the second Wednesday.

04Dónde alojarse

There are two choices and they produce different festivals. Staying on the Lido puts you within walking or cycling distance of every screening; the Excelsior and the seafront hotels along the Lungomare are the landmarks, the smaller pensions on the interior streets are the practical option, and the island empties of atmosphere the moment the festival ends. Staying in the historic center gives you Venice in the evening and a twenty-minute boat ride each way, which is romantic on the first day and tiring by the fourth; Dorsoduro and Castello are closest to the San Zaccaria departures, Cannaregio is quieter and cheaper. A third group takes rooms on the mainland at Mestre and commutes by bus and boat, which works but adds an hour to each end of the day. Whichever you choose, the timing of the last boat governs everything.

05Acceso y hospitalidad

The Mostra is unusual among the major festivals in selling to the public. La Biennale publishes a ticket scheme each summer covering single seats in the main halls, multi-screening cards and subscriptions, sold online in advance and at box offices on the Lido, with a portion of seats in each screening released for public sale. Alongside that it runs the accreditation system common to festivals of this rank: press, industry and market accreditation applied for online in the summer, each with its own access levels and queue priorities, and reduced-rate accreditation for students and cinema-club members. The Venice Production Bridge, the festival's market arm based at the Hotel Excelsior, registers companies separately. Corporate hospitality is confined to the festival's sponsors, who operate lounges and terraces along the Lungomare; the organizer does not sell hospitality packages to the public. Exact prices and application deadlines change each year and are published on labiennale.org.

06Dónde tiene lugar la actividad social

Almost all of it takes place on a single seafront street. The Lungomare Marconi between the Palazzo del Cinema and the Excelsior is where people wait, meet and are photographed, and the hotel terraces facing the Adriatic along it are the festival's daytime offices. The Excelsior's beach, with its rows of wooden bathing huts, is in use throughout and is public-facing outside sponsor hours. The Casinò building next to the Palazzo takes overflow screenings and press conferences. Away from the seafront, the Gran Viale Santa Maria Elisabetta running across the island from the vaporetto stop holds the ordinary bars, gelaterie and restaurants where most of the eating actually happens, and it stays open late. In the historic city, the bars around Campo Santa Margherita and the Zattere in Dorsoduro take the late crowd that has crossed back, and the Giardini and Arsenale draw the same visitors during the day in Biennale years.

07Cómo llegar

Aviación comercialVenice Marco Polo (VCE) is on the lagoon's northern edge and connects to the Lido directly by Alilaguna waterbus in roughly an hour and a quarter, or faster by water taxi. Treviso (TSF), 40 km north, takes low-cost traffic and requires a bus transfer.
FerroviarioVenezia Santa Lucia, at the head of the Grand Canal, has high-speed services from Milan in about two and a half hours, Rome in under four, and international trains from Austria and Slovenia. From the station, vaporetto line 1 or 2 and then the Lido line, or a change at San Zaccaria, completes the journey; allow an hour with luggage.
AutomóvilCars reach only as far as Piazzale Roma or the Tronchetto car park; from there everything is by water. The Lido is the one part of Venice where cars circulate, reached by the car ferry from Tronchetto, but driving there is rarely worth the complication for a festival visit.
Aviación privadaMarco Polo handles business aviation through its general-aviation terminal, and Treviso and Verona absorb overflow during the festival. Onward transfer is by water taxi from the airport dock, which is the fastest way to the Lido.
MarinasThe Lido has moorings at the Marina di Venezia and the Excelsior's own landing stage, and larger visiting yachts anchor off the Lido and use tenders; the Venice Yacht Pier at San Giorgio serves the historic centre. Lagoon traffic rules and speed limits are strictly enforced.

08Aspectos prácticos

VestimentaEvening premieres in the Sala Grande are formal — dark suit or black tie, long dress — and the red carpet is walked in front of a public crowd on the Lungomare. Everything else is a beach island in early September: linen, light cotton, and shoes you can cycle in. The gap between the two registers is wider here than at any comparable festival, and people routinely change at their hotel between an afternoon screening and an evening one.
ClimaEarly September on the Adriatic is warm and humid, with afternoon highs typically in the upper twenties Celsius, sea temperatures still comfortable for swimming, and a real chance of heavy thundery rain that can arrive quickly. Mosquitoes on the Lido are a genuine consideration at dusk. No station normals were sourced for this record, so the summary is qualitative.
Cómo desplazarseThe festival runs on the ACTV waterbus network and on bicycles. Lines 1, 2, 5.1, 5.2, 6 and the seasonal 10 connect the historic centre to Lido Santa Maria Elisabetta; from the stop it is a fifteen-minute walk or five-minute bus ride along the Gran Viale to the Palazzo del Cinema. Buy a multi-day travel card rather than single tickets. Water taxis are fast, expensive and the only option after the last scheduled boat; queues for them at the Lido after a late screening are long. On the island itself, a rented bicycle is faster than anything else.
HotelesThe Lido's hotel stock is small and is taken first, largely by companies and press organizations holding the same rooms annually; what is left goes early in the summer. Venice proper has far more capacity but September is high season in its own right, and the combination of the Mostra, the Regata Storica and, in alternate years, the Biennale exhibitions keeps rates firm. Booking by spring is normal practice for either side of the water.
RestaurantesLido restaurants along the Gran Viale and the back streets are simple, family-run and full every night of the festival; they take bookings and are worth making. The hotel dining rooms on the Lungomare are frequently given over to private use during the festival, so their published hours cannot be relied on. In the historic centre, the bacari of Cannaregio and Castello are the sensible late option, though most kitchens close earlier than festival schedules suggest.
Momento de la reservaLido accommodation for early September should be secured by late winter; the historic centre by spring. Public tickets and passes go on sale in the summer once the program is announced, and premieres in the Sala Grande sell out within hours of release. Accreditation applications open in the summer with firm deadlines. Restaurant tables a week or two ahead are usually sufficient.
EntradasLa Biennale sells tickets to the general public, which is the Mostra's defining practical difference from Cannes. Single tickets to individual screenings and multi-screening cards are sold online through the Biennale's ticketing system and at box offices on the Lido, with allocations released ahead of each day; unsold seats are also released to queues shortly before screenings. Prices are published each summer on labiennale.org and are not reproduced here because the 2027 schedule had not been issued at the time of writing. Reduced-price accreditation exists for students and film-society members.
HospitalidadThere is no publicly purchasable hospitality program. The festival's principal sponsors — the watch, drinks and beauty houses named in each edition's partner list — run terraces and lounges along the Lungomare and on the Excelsior's beach, and access to those is by invitation through the sponsors themselves. The Venice Production Bridge sells stand and registration packages to companies. Reporting by the trade press describes a dense evening program of studio and brand receptions on the Lido and at hotels in the historic centre; none of it is sold to visitors.

09Historia

The first Mostra was held in August 1932 on the terrace of the Hotel Excelsior as a section of the Venice Biennale, with no jury and no prizes. It became competitive within a few years and, in the late 1930s, politically compromised: the principal award of the period carried the name of the head of the Italian government, and it was Venice's subordination to the regime that persuaded France to found a rival festival at Cannes. The Mostra stopped during the war and resumed in 1946.

The purpose-built Palazzo del Cinema opened on the Lungomare in 1937 and remains the festival's center. Political turbulence in 1968 led to the abolition of the competition, and the festival ran without prizes through the 1970s; the Golden Lion was reinstated in 1980. Alberto Barbera, artistic director in the late 1990s and again since 2011, rebuilt its relationship with American studios and specialty distributors, and it is that shift, more than any single film, that produced the festival's current position in the awards calendar.

10Quién está ahí

Directors, performers and their teams; distributors, sales agents and streaming buyers working the Venice Production Bridge; a large accredited press corps, weighted toward Italian and European critics; programmers from Toronto, London, New York and the autumn circuit; Biennale members and Italian cultural institutions; and, distinctively, a substantial paying public of Venetians, mainland Italians and holidaying visitors who buy tickets and fill the same halls.
