日程 確認済みThe official site lists Carnevale di Venezia 2027 as 23 January to 9 February 2027, closing on Shrove Tuesday. The city has in recent years run an opening week before the main programme in order to spread visitors, and some listings therefore give 30 January as the start of the principal period; both readings share the 9 February close.

Venice's Carnival is a civic festival rather than a private one. The city organizes it, most of it happens outdoors and free, and the fixed points are public: a water parade along the Rio di Cannaregio on the opening weekend, with rowing clubs and decorated boats; the Festa delle Marie, in which twelve young Venetian women process from San Pietro di Castello to Piazza San Marco; the Volo dell'Angelo, when a figure descends on a cable from the campanile of San Marco into the piazza; and the Svolo del Leon on the final afternoon, when the lion banner is raised and the Carnival closes. Between them the city runs a costume competition in the piazza, judged over several days, and a programme of street theatre and music across the sestieri.

The masks are the whole visual language and they are older than the modern festival. The bauta, a full white face with a projecting chin that allows the wearer to eat and speak, worn with a tricorn and a black cloak; the colombina half-mask; the plain white volto; the beaked medico della peste. Mask-making was a recognized Venetian guild from the fifteenth century and a handful of workshops in the city still make them in papier-mache and gesso, alongside a great deal of imported merchandise.

What a visitor actually encounters depends on the hour. In the morning the costumed figures pose along the Riva degli Schiavoni and in the piazza for photographers, and the streets are passable. By early afternoon on the weekends the Rialto and the route between San Marco and the station are at a standstill, and the city operates one-way pedestrian systems and, in some years, controlled access to Piazza San Marco.

01重要な理由

Carnival is the reason Venice has a high season in February, and it is the only mass event in the city's calendar that belongs to the city rather than to an international art or film organization. That gives it a different character from the Biennale or the film festival: the audience is broader, the entry price for most of it is nothing, and the participants in costume are largely amateurs who make or hire their own and come back every year. It is also the clearest single illustration of Venice's central problem. Wikipedia cites around three million visitors a year for Carnival, in a historic centre with fewer than 50,000 residents, and the city's management of the festival - timed entry, capacity controls in the piazza, an extended opening week to spread arrivals - is essentially a crowd-control exercise. In our reading, the festival is worth attending on weekdays and worth avoiding on the final weekend, and the difference between those two experiences is larger than for any other event in this calendar.

02前後の週

February is otherwise Venice's quietest month, and Carnival converts it into the second-busiest period of the year. Water-bus lines run to a special timetable and the routes through San Marco are the ones to avoid; on the busiest days the city imposes one-way flows on the Rialto and the Lista di Spagna and can close the piazza when it reaches capacity. Hotel rates rise steeply for the final weekend and Shrove Tuesday and fall back immediately afterward. Away from the crowd the city is at its best in winter: the Accademia, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, the Frari and the Scuola Grande di San Rocco are all reachable without a queue, the Rialto market runs as usual, and Cannaregio, Castello and the Giudecca see almost none of the Carnival traffic. The lagoon islands - Murano, Burano, Torcello - are half an hour away by vaporetto and are the standard escape on a busy Saturday. Acqua alta is a genuine possibility in February and the city publishes tide forecasts daily.

03到着時期

Come midweek. The opening weekend carries the water parade and the Festa delle Marie, and the final weekend into Shrove Tuesday carries the Volo dell'Angelo repeat, the costume final and the Svolo del Leon, and both are the most crowded days of the Venetian year. The Tuesday to Thursday in between gives you costumed Venice with room to walk. Three nights is enough. Arrive in the morning if you can: checking into a hotel across the city with luggage on a crowded Saturday afternoon is a genuinely unpleasant experience.

04宿泊先

San Marco puts you inside the events and inside the congestion; it is the most expensive and least restful choice, though it removes the problem of crossing the city at night. Dorsoduro, around the Accademia and the Zattere, is the best compromise - quiet, walkable to the piazza in fifteen minutes, and full of the city's better small hotels and its student life. Cannaregio, along the Fondamenta della Misericordia, is where Venetians eat and drink and is a twenty-minute walk from San Marco. Castello, east of the Arsenale, is the quietest and cheapest of the central sestieri. The Giudecca, across the water, is a separate calm world five minutes by vaporetto. Mestre on the mainland is the budget answer and costs you the city at night, which is when Venice is worth being in. Avoid anywhere that requires two vaporetto changes with luggage.

05アクセスとホスピタリティ

Almost all of Carnival is free and takes place in the open: the water parade, the processions, the piazza events, the costume competition and the street programme. The city publishes the full programme on its official Carnival site each January. What is sold is the private layer around it - masked balls and dinners staged in palazzi and hotels by their own organizers, priced and marketed independently of the city and of widely varying quality; the city does not run them and does not vouch for them. In some years the Comune has also sold seating or controlled admission to specific piazza events, and it operates capacity limits on Piazza San Marco on peak days. Venice's separate day-visitor access fee for non-staying visitors applies on designated days and is administered by the city, not by the Carnival. No prices are quoted here because the official 2027 programme could not be read directly.

06社交活動の場

The public stage is Piazza San Marco and the Piazzetta, where the costumed participants gather to be photographed from mid-morning, and the Riva degli Schiavoni along the water. The Rio di Cannaregio and the Grand Canal carry the water processions. Away from those, the bacari - the small wine bars of Cannaregio's Fondamenta della Misericordia, the Rialto market lanes and Campo Santa Margherita in Dorsoduro - are where Venetians and everyone else actually spend the evening, standing up, and they are the most enjoyable part of the week. The historic cafes under the arcades of the piazza, Florian and Quadri, are landmarks with terrace prices to match. The balls in the palazzi are private commercial events and nothing about them is public.

07アクセス方法

民間航空Venice Marco Polo is 13 km from the centre, connected by Alilaguna water bus to San Marco and the Grand Canal in about 75 minutes, by land bus to Piazzale Roma in 20 minutes, or by private water taxi in about 30 minutes. Treviso, 40 km away, takes low-cost traffic.
鉄道Venezia Santa Lucia is in the city itself, at the top of the Grand Canal, with high-speed services to Milan in two and a half hours, Florence in two, Rome in three and a half, and direct trains from Vienna, Munich and Paris. Rail is by a distance the best way to arrive. Do not book Venezia Mestre by mistake - it is on the mainland.
車Cars stop at Piazzale Roma or the Tronchetto garage and go no further; there are no roads in Venice. Parking is expensive and full during Carnival weekends. Driving is only worth it if you are continuing into the Veneto.
プライベート航空Marco Polo handles business aviation through its own terminal, about 30 minutes from San Marco by water taxi. Treviso and Verona are the alternatives.
マリーナVenice is a city of moorings. Marina Santelena near the Giardini, the Marina del Cavallino and the Certosa marina take visiting yachts; the Giudecca canal and the San Giorgio basin carry the large traffic. Water taxis from Marco Polo, Piazzale Roma and the marinas are the standard arrival, and in February they are readily available.

08実用情報

服装Nobody is required to dress at all and most visitors do not. If you want to take part rather than watch, costume hire is available across the city and a bauta and cloak are enough to change how the week feels. The practical requirements matter more: February in Venice is cold, damp and windy off the lagoon, the paving is wet, and you will walk several miles a day, so waterproof footwear and a serious coat are the real dress code. Boots for acqua alta are sold everywhere and are occasionally necessary.
天気February in Venice typically brings daytime highs around 8 to 10C and overnight lows near 1 to 3C, with 40 to 55 mm of rain and frequent damp fog off the lagoon. High water is a real possibility: the MOSE barriers now protect the city from the worst tides, but moderate acqua alta still floods the lowest squares, San Marco among them, and the city publishes forecasts each day.
市内での移動Walking and the vaporetto are the only options. Buy a multi-day ACTV travel card on arrival; single tickets are poor value. Lines 1 and 2 along the Grand Canal are the ones that fill, and the Giudecca and lagoon routes are far quieter. During peak Carnival days the city runs one-way pedestrian routes on the main axes and can close Piazza San Marco at capacity, so allow much more time than the map suggests. Water taxis are expensive but genuinely useful with luggage.
ホテルRates roughly double for the final Carnival weekend and Shrove Tuesday and are ordinary February prices midweek at the start of the festival. The good small hotels in Dorsoduro and Cannaregio go two to three months ahead for the closing weekend; almost anything can be had midweek at a few weeks' notice. Book earlier if you want a canal-side room, which is the thing worth paying for here.
レストランThe restaurants around San Marco and the Rialto bridge are the city's worst and its most expensive; the ones in Cannaregio, Castello, Dorsoduro and on the Giudecca are where to eat. Book for the weekends, when the whole city is full, and go early or after nine. The bacaro habit - a glass of wine and cicchetti standing at the bar, moving on to the next one - is cheaper, better and more Venetian than any sit-down meal, and needs no reservation.
予約時期Two to three months for the closing weekend, a few weeks midweek. Restaurant tables a week ahead for weekends. If you want a palazzo ball, those are sold by their own organizers from the autumn; check who is actually running it before paying.
チケットThe city's Carnival programme is overwhelmingly free and outdoors, published on the official Carnival site each January. Some piazza events have had ticketed or capacity-controlled admission in recent years, and Venice's separate day-visitor access fee applies to non-staying visitors on designated days. Masked balls and dinners in palazzi and hotels are commercial events run by private organizers and sold independently; the city does not run them. No prices are stated because the official site could not be read directly.
ホスピタリティThere is no official hospitality programme. The private ball market around Carnival is large, unregulated and of extremely variable quality, and packages are sold by hotels, palazzo owners and agencies on their own terms. Anyone buying should establish who the organizer is, where the event is held and what is included before paying, and should not assume any connection with the Comune di Venezia's own programme.

09沿革

Carnival in Venice is documented from the twelfth century and was formalized during the Renaissance, reaching its widest licence in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, when the masking season ran for months and the mask suspended, in principle, distinctions of rank. The fall of the Republic ended it: under Austrian rule the festival was outlawed in 1797 and it effectively disappeared for nearly two centuries, surviving only in the islands and in private. The modern Carnival dates from 1979, when the city revived it deliberately as a cultural and economic project, and almost everything a visitor now sees - the Volo dell'Angelo, the Festa delle Marie in its present form, the costume competition - is a modern reconstruction of, or an invention on the theme of, the historical festival. The mask workshops revived alongside it. That the festival is a modern creation does not make it inauthentic; it makes it a piece of civic culture about forty-five years old wearing eighteenth-century dress.

10参加者

Venetians and Veneto families, who make up the core of the costumed participants and treat the festival as their own; Italian domestic visitors, especially at the weekends; a large European short-break audience from Germany, Austria, France and Britain; a serious and long-standing international costume community, who commission or make eighteenth-century dress and come every year to be photographed; photographers, professional and amateur, in very large numbers; and a general tourist public. This is the least stratified crowd of any event in this calendar and one of the largest.

2026 完了The close is fixed: Carnival ends on Shrove Tuesday, which fell on 17 February 2026. The start is derived from the pattern the city has used in recent years - opening on a Saturday about seventeen days before Shrove Tuesday, which gives 31 January 2026 - because the official site returns HTTP 403 to automated requests and the 2026 programme could not be read directly.
