The oldest and largest international art exhibition: a hundred national participations across Venice for six months of every even year.

The Venice Biennale is not a fair and nothing is for sale. It is a six-month exhibition in two main sites and a hundred smaller ones: the Giardini, the nineteenth-century public gardens in Castello where about thirty countries maintain permanent pavilions built over more than a century, and the Arsenale, the republic's old rope works and shipyards, whose Corderie provides a half-kilometre of continuous exhibition space. A curator appointed by La Biennale mounts a single international exhibition across both, and every participating country mounts its own show independently, either in its Giardini pavilion or in a rented palazzo, church or warehouse elsewhere in the city.
The 2026 edition, the sixty-first, is titled In Minor Keys and was conceived by Koyo Kouoh, who died in May 2025 before it opened; La Biennale carried out her exhibition with her family's support. It carries 110 invited participants and 100 National Participations, seven of them first-time, along with 31 approved collateral events staged by non-profit institutions around the city.
The Biennale has two entirely different personalities. For three days in early May it is the densest gathering in the international art calendar, when the pavilions open to press and professionals and the whole trade is in Venice at once. For the remaining six months it is a large, cheap, public exhibition that anyone can walk into, and the better way to see it.
01重要性说明
Nothing else in the art calendar carries this weight. The Biennale is where national cultural policy, curatorial ambition and artistic reputation are settled in public, and a Golden Lion changes careers in a way no fair result does. Its structure, borrowed from the world's fairs of the nineteenth century, is anachronistic and repeatedly criticized, and it has survived every attempt to replace it.
Our reading is that the vernissage and the exhibition should be understood as two separate events. The May pre-opening is the calendar entry: three days in which every museum director, curator, dealer and collector who matters is on the same vaporetto, and the surrounding programme of palazzo openings and foundation dinners is the largest of its kind anywhere. The six-month run is the actual cultural product, and it is genuinely public, inexpensive and best visited in September or October when the crowds have gone and the city is bearable.
02前后一周
The May pre-opening is the event most of the international art world means when it says Venice. Over three days the pavilions in the Giardini and Arsenale open to accredited visitors, and the national participations scattered across the city open in sequence, which turns the week into a walking and boat-borne itinerary rather than a fair. The collateral events, more than thirty of them, are mounted in palazzi, scuole and deconsecrated churches, and most are free.
The permanent institutions program to the opening: Palazzo Grassi and Punta della Dogana for the Pinault Collection, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection on the Grand Canal, Fondazione Prada at Ca' Corner della Regina, the Fondazione Querini Stampalia, Ocean Space in the church of San Lorenzo, and the Fondazione Giorgio Cini on the island of San Giorgio Maggiore. Venice fills completely: hotel rates reach their annual peak, water taxis are booked out, and the vaporetti to the Giardini and Arsenale stops run at capacity.
For the remaining six months the city returns to its ordinary rhythm of tourism, and the Biennale becomes something you can visit on a Tuesday morning with a ticket bought at the gate. September and October are the best months to do it.
03抵达时间
For the pre-opening, arrive the day before it starts and stay three or four nights; the pavilions open on a staggered schedule and trying to compress it into two days does not work. Accreditation is required. For an ordinary visit during the run, allow two full days: one for the Giardini and one for the Arsenale, with a third if you intend to see the pavilions scattered across the city, which are the most rewarding and the most exhausting part. Avoid July and August, when Venice is at its hottest and most crowded, and the last two weeks of November, when acqua alta is likeliest.
04住宿地点
Castello, the sestiere that contains both the Giardini and the Arsenale, is the practical choice and the least touristed part of central Venice; the Danieli on the Riva degli Schiavoni is the landmark address at its western end. San Marco is central and expensive, with the Gritti Palace on the Grand Canal as the familiar reference point. Dorsoduro, around the Accademia and the Zattere, is quieter and closest to the Guggenheim and Punta della Dogana. Cannaregio in the north has the best value and a real residential life. The Giudecca and the Lido are a vaporetto ride away and considerably calmer, with the Cipriani on Giudecca the landmark there. Mestre on the mainland is the fallback during the vernissage, twelve minutes by train from Santa Lucia and a fraction of the price.
05出入与接待
During the run the Biennale is straightforwardly public. Tickets covering both the Giardini and the Arsenale are sold at both entrances and on labiennale.org, valid for entry to each site, with reduced rates for students and under-26s and free admission for children; the organizer publishes prices each year and they are not reproduced here. Most national pavilions outside the two main sites are free, as are most collateral events, which makes a self-directed walking tour of the city pavilions one of the best free art itineraries in Europe.
The three pre-opening days are the exception and operate on accreditation rather than tickets. La Biennale accredits press and art-world professionals through an application process published on its site; it is not sold, and it is the one genuinely hard door of the Venice year. The openings and receptions around the pavilions during those days are hosted by the participating countries, foundations and galleries rather than by La Biennale, and are invitation-based.
06社交活动场所
The public geography of the vernissage is well established. The Giardini's own café and the Arsenale's Corderie exit are the daytime meeting points, and the Riva degli Schiavoni between them carries the walk. In the evening the movement is toward San Marco and Dorsoduro: the bars along the Zattere, the small bacari of Cannaregio and San Polo where the trade drinks standing up, and the terraces of the Grand Canal hotels. The Giardini Reali and the Fondamenta delle Zattere fill at sunset. On San Giorgio Maggiore, the Cini foundation's cloisters open for the week. Almost everything worth seeing happens in public: Venice is too small and too walkable for a private circuit to stay private, which is part of the week's charm.

09历史
The first Esposizione Internazionale d'Arte opened in 1895 and drew 224,000 visitors. National pavilions in the Giardini began with Belgium in 1907, followed by Germany, Britain and Hungary in 1909, and the pavilions accumulated through the century as a kind of architectural record of shifting states and alliances. The Arsenale was opened up for exhibition use from the 1980s, more than doubling the available space, and the collateral programme spread the Biennale into the city's palaces and churches.
La Biennale became a foundation in 2004 and now runs art, architecture, cinema, dance, music and theatre. The art and architecture exhibitions once alternated with art in odd years; the pandemic postponements of 2020 and 2021 reversed that, and since 2022 the Art Exhibition has fallen in even years and the Architecture Exhibition in odd. The 2026 edition is the first to be completed after the death of its curator.

During the pre-opening: museum directors, curators, biennial organizers, national commissioners and cultural attachés, critics, dealers, collectors and artists, in the widest geographic spread of any art event. During the run: a general international public in very large numbers, school and university groups, and the ordinary Venetian tourist audience, for whom the Biennale is one of the city's attractions rather than an art-world occasion.
