Dates · 82nd session high-level week ExpectedNot yet published. Under the Assembly's rules the 82nd session will open on Tuesday 14 September 2027, and in the years when the session has opened that late — 2021 and 2022 — the general debate began the following Tuesday. The estimate therefore places high-level week on 21-27 September 2027; if the two-week interval used from 2023 to 2026 is applied instead, it would begin on 28 September.

High-level week is the annual opening of the United Nations General Assembly's general debate, when the heads of state and government of the member states address the Assembly in turn from the podium in Turtle Bay. The formal business is the debate and the summits scheduled around it; the practical consequence is that most of the world's governments, and the diplomatic, philanthropic, financial and press apparatus that follows them, are in one square mile of Manhattan for seven days.

What has grown around that core is now larger than it. Climate Week NYC, run since 2009 by the non-profit Climate Group, occupies the same days — 20 to 27 September in 2026 — and its organisers describe more than 100,000 people at several hundred events across the city. Foundations, development banks, universities and corporations schedule their own summits into the week, and Midtown ballrooms are booked out for them.

01Why it matters

No other week concentrates this many governments in one city, and the consequence is that a great deal of business with nothing to do with the United Nations is scheduled to catch people who are already there.

02The week around it

Midtown East becomes difficult and stays that way. The police impose frozen zones around the headquarters and the delegation hotels, First and Second Avenues and stretches of the FDR Drive close repeatedly for motorcades, and crossing the East Fifties on foot is often faster than any vehicle.

03When to arrive

Arrive Sunday and be in place before Monday morning, when the first summits convene and the road closures begin.

04Where to stay

Delegations take the Midtown East hotels around the United Nations and along Park and Lexington; those blocks are inside the security perimeter, which means secure but slow.

05Access and hospitality

The General Assembly Hall is closed to the public during high-level week; access is limited to accredited delegations, mission personnel, accredited non-governmental organisations and credentialed press, and headquarters tours are suspended. The general debate is broadcast free on UN Web TV and archived.

06Where the social activity happens

The visible week happens in Midtown hotel ballrooms, in the Ford Foundation and Asia Society auditoriums, in university halls at NYU and Columbia, and in the lobbies of the hotels where delegations are billeted.

07Getting there

Commercial aviationKennedy, Newark and LaGuardia all serve the city; LaGuardia is closest but the other two carry the international traffic.
RailGrand Central is a ten-minute walk from the headquarters and Penn Station connects the Northeast Corridor.
CarDriving in Midtown East during high-level week is close to unworkable; expect avenues and cross-streets to close without notice for motorcades.
Private aviationTeterboro is the principal business-aviation field for Manhattan, with Westchester County and Republic taking overflow; all are under slot pressure.
HelicopterThe East 34th Street and Downtown Manhattan heliports operate, with movements rising sharply subject to temporary flight restrictions over Midtown.

08Practicalities

DressFormal business dress inside the perimeter and at the summits; national dress is common among delegations.
WeatherLate September in New York is usually the best weather of the year: dry, mild afternoons in the low twenties Celsius, cool evenings, low humidity.
Getting aroundWalk or take the subway. Motorcade closures make road journeys through Midtown East unpredictable; allow double the usual time for anything requiring a vehicle.
HotelsMidtown hotels are block-booked by delegations and by the organisations running side events, and rates across Manhattan reach among the highest of the year.
RestaurantsMidtown private rooms are taken months ahead and many Midtown East restaurants effectively operate on private hire all week.
Reservation timingMidtown hotel rooms are commonly held from the spring; ballrooms and private dining rooms are contracted six to twelve months ahead.
TicketsThere is no ticket. Access to the headquarters requires United Nations accreditation, and public tours are suspended for the week.
HospitalityThe United Nations sells nothing. The week's hospitality is run by governments, foundations, corporations and media organisations on their own invitation lists.

09History

The General Assembly first met in London in January 1946 and moved to New York the following year, settling into the Turtle Bay headquarters when it opened in 1952. The surrounding week grew from the 1990s as the Assembly began scheduling summits alongside the debate, and accelerated after the 2015 adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Agreement.

10Who is there

Heads of state and government and their delegations; foreign ministers and permanent representatives; UN agency and multilateral bank leadership; foundation and non-governmental organisation heads; development-finance and impact investors; corporate sustainability teams; climate scientists and campaigners; and several thousand accredited journalists.
