The Masters

Previsto · Augusta National Golf Club

Golf's first major of the year, played every April on the same course by invitation, with the smallest field and the tightest access in the sport.

Fechas PrevistoThe Masters pattern is fixed: it is played in the first full week of April and finishes on the second Sunday of the month. In 2027 that gives practice rounds from Monday 5 April, the Par 3 Contest on Wednesday 7 April, and competitive rounds from Thursday 8 April to Sunday 11 April. Golf Digest's guide to the 2027 ticket application states the same dates and reports the club's prices as USD 125 for Monday and Tuesday practice rounds, USD 150 for Wednesday and USD 160 for each tournament day. Recorded as expected because Augusta National's own site could not be read directly in this pass; the date itself is not in doubt.

The Masters is the only major championship played on the same course every year, and the course belongs to the club that runs the tournament. Augusta National opened in 1933 on the grounds of a former nursery, laid out by Bobby Jones with the architect Alister MacKenzie, and the first tournament followed in 1934.

The week has a fixed shape that has barely changed in decades. Practice rounds run Monday to Wednesday and are open to a separate class of ticket; the Par 3 Contest, played on Wednesday afternoon over a nine-hole course beside Ike's Pond, is the only occasion in professional golf where players regularly hand their bags to their children.

What a visitor experiences is unlike any other sporting event, mostly because of what has been removed. Mobile phones are banned from the grounds and the rule is enforced without exception. There are no advertising hoardings on the course and the television broadcast carries a small number of sponsors.

01Por qué es relevante

The Masters is the most watched and the hardest to attend of golf's four majors, and its authority rests on a decision the club made early and has never revisited: to control the event completely rather than to maximize it. The field is small, the course is unchanging, the commercial presence is restrained, and the ticket is allocated rather than sold at market. In our reading, that combination is why the tournament reads as a fixed point in the international calendar rather than as an American sporting event: it is the week the golf year starts, the first weekend of the American spring social season, and the only major whose date, venue and format a traveller can plan around a decade ahead.

02La semana en torno al evento

Augusta is a city of a few hundred thousand and the tournament roughly doubles it.

The tournament's satellite programme is unusually large and almost entirely private, run from those leased houses by equipment manufacturers, financial firms and apparel brands.

03Cuándo llegar

The practice rounds are the ones to try for. Monday and Tuesday give the run of the course with players on it, access to the merchandise building, and a fraction of the crowd; Wednesday adds the Par 3 Contest and is the most oversubscribed of the three.

04Dónde alojarse

There is very little conventional hotel stock near the course, so the week runs on house rentals. The neighborhoods immediately around Augusta National, along Berckmans Road and toward the Country Club Hills area, are where most of the corporate housing sits and are within walking distance of the gates. Downtown Augusta along Broad Street and the river has the city's small hotels and its restaurants and bars, ten minutes from the course.

05Acceso y hospitalidad

Augusta National allocates rather than sells. The long-standing four-day series badges are held by patrons on a list that opened in 1972, closed in 1978, reopened briefly in 2000 and closed again; those badges pass only to a surviving spouse, and the club has never reopened the list. Everyone else applies through the club's online random selection, which is the only authorized route to a ticket and which covers the three practice days and a small number of daily tournament tickets. Applications are made in the months after the tournament for the following year and every applicant is notified by email whether or not they are drawn. Reporting by Golf Digest gives the club's 2027 prices as USD 125 for the Monday and Tuesday practice rounds, USD 150 for Wednesday and USD 160 for each tournament day, which are a fraction of what the secondary market charges; Wikipedia records the four-day series badge at USD 525 for 2026.

06Dónde tiene lugar la actividad social

On the property, the public gathering points are the lawn beneath the oak tree behind the clubhouse, which is where the golf industry stands all week, the concession pavilions, and the merchandise building. Everything else at Augusta National is closed.

07Cómo llegar

Aviación comercialAugusta Regional at Bush Field adds substantial seasonal service for the week and is fifteen minutes from the course.
FerroviarioNone useful. Amtrak does not serve Augusta in any way a visitor should plan around.
AutomóvilA car is essentially required, and the drive from Atlanta on I-20 is the standard approach.
Aviación privadaAugusta Regional and Daniel Field both handle heavy business-aviation traffic during Masters week and impose slot and parking restrictions; aircraft are routinely repositioned to Columbia, Aiken and Atlanta between arrival and departure.
HelicópteroCharter operators run shuttles into the Augusta area during the week from surrounding airports. There is no landing at the club.

08Aspectos prácticos

VestimentaThe club publishes conduct rules rather than a dress code, and the crowd dresses accordingly: neat trousers or chinos, collared shirts, sensible shoes for a course that climbs and falls more than it appears to.
ClimaEarly April in Augusta typically brings daily highs around 23 to 25C, roughly 74 to 77F, with cool mornings near 9 to 11C and high humidity later in the week.
Cómo desplazarseDrive and park in the club's free lots, which are well run and closer than most paid alternatives.
HotelesThe market is house rentals rather than hotels, and prices for Masters week bear no relation to the rest of the year.
RestaurantesAugusta's restaurants take Masters-week bookings from the previous spring and the good ones are gone by autumn. Broad Street downtown absorbs walk-ins in volume.
Momento de la reservaTicket applications are made roughly a year ahead through the club's random selection. Houses and hotels for Masters week are contracted six to twelve months out, and the closest properties considerably earlier.
EntradasAccess is by series badge, held on a closed list, or through Augusta National's online random selection, which covers the three practice days and a limited number of tournament-day tickets and is the only authorized purchase route. Applicants are notified by email either way.
HospitalidadThe club runs its own on-site hospitality venues, allocated by separate application, and does not license third-party hospitality on the property. Off-site corporate hospitality operates from leased private houses around the course and is not sold publicly.

09Historia

Bobby Jones retired from competition in 1930 having won the amateur and open championships of both Britain and the United States in a single season, and with the investment banker Clifford Roberts he built a club in Georgia where he could play in private. The Augusta National Invitation Tournament, first held in 1934, was conceived as a gathering of Jones's friends and contemporaries; it took the name Masters in 1939.

10Quién está ahí

Series-badge patrons, many of them multi-generational holders from Georgia and the Carolinas; the golf industry in full, including manufacturers, agents, media and tour officials; corporate hospitality from American finance, law and industry entertaining in leased houses; and an international minority of golf travellers who have waited years for a ticket.
