New York's September fair, with more than 230 galleries at the Javits Center and the city's autumn gallery season opening around it.

The Armory Show occupies the north hall of the Javits Center on Manhattan's far West Side for four days in September and opens the American art season. Its scale is the point: more than 230 galleries in 2026, considerably larger than Frieze New York in May and broader in range, running from blue-chip modern material to galleries under ten years old. It is organized in five sections. Galleries carries the main presentations; Solo gives a stand to a single artist; Focus is a thematic strand under a guest curator; Presents is reserved for galleries founded within the last decade; and Platform places large-scale installation between the booths. Because the Javits is a genuine convention hall, the experience is closer to Art Basel Miami Beach than to Frieze London.
01Warum es relevant ist
Armory Week is the moment New York's gallery calendar restarts after the summer. Every gallery in Chelsea, Tribeca and the Lower East Side opens a show in the same days, and for the American trade the fair functions as the season's opening bell rather than as its biggest sale.
Our reading is that its position is genuinely improved since Frieze bought it in 2023. Owning both New York fairs let the group differentiate them: Frieze New York is small, central and expensive; the Armory Show is large, comprehensive and much easier to get into.
02Die Woche darum
Armory Week is spread across Manhattan rather than concentrated at the Javits. Independent 20th Century and SPRING/BREAK Art Show run in the same days in their own downtown buildings, and the fall gallery openings in Chelsea, a fifteen-minute walk south of the fair, are the week's real event: almost every gallery on West 19th through West 27th Streets opens on the same Thursday evening. The complication in 2026 is that the fair's move to late September puts it inside the United Nations General Assembly's high-level week, which brings road closures, security cordons and hotel demand to the East Side and Midtown. The Javits is far enough west to be unaffected directly, but crosstown travel and hotel availability are meaningfully worse.
03Anreisezeitpunkt
Wednesday evening if you hold a preview card. On a general ticket, Thursday afternoon or Friday morning is best, and Thursday evening delivers the Chelsea gallery openings, which are free and open to anyone. Saturday is the busiest day at the Javits. Two days covers the fair and the gallery districts comfortably.
04Unterkunft
Chelsea and Hudson Yards put the Javits, the galleries and the High Line within walking distance and are the practical base. Midtown has the greatest room supply but is worst affected by General Assembly closures in a late-September year. Tribeca and SoHo suit anyone whose week is really downtown, twenty minutes by subway. The West Side around the Javits itself has limited hotel stock and little to do in the evening.
05Zugang und Hospitality
The fair sells single-day and multi-day tickets on its own website, with a VIP preview on the opening day distributed by invitation through exhibiting galleries and the organizer rather than sold. Frieze membership carries preview access across the group's fairs. The organizer publishes prices each year and they are not reproduced here. The talks programme is included with admission. The free element of the week is substantial: the Chelsea, Tribeca and Lower East Side gallery openings are open-door, and the High Line's commissions are free.
06Wo das gesellschaftliche Geschehen stattfindet
The Javits has little social life beyond its own cafés, so the week's public geography is Chelsea and the West Side: the High Line, the bars and restaurants of the Meatpacking District, and the gallery blocks between Tenth and Eleventh Avenues, where the Thursday openings spill onto the pavement. Hudson Yards' plaza is the nearest gathering point to the fair. Downtown, Tribeca and the Lower East Side around Orchard and Ludlow take the later evening.

09Geschichte
The fair began in 1994 as the Gramercy International Art Fair, staged by five dealers in rooms of the Gramercy Park Hotel. It was renamed The Armory Show in 1999 on moving to the 69th Regiment Armory, borrowing the name of the 1913 exhibition that introduced European modernism to New York. It moved to the West Side piers in 2001, expanded to Piers 92 and 94 in 2009, and shifted to the Javits Center in 2021, at the same time moving from March to the autumn. Frieze acquired it in July 2023 and has kept the name and the September position.
10Wer ist dort
American galleries and collectors in the widest range of any New York fair, from major institutions to first-time buyers; museum curators and acquisition committees from across the country; art advisers; a large New York public across the weekend; and, since Frieze's acquisition, a growing European and Latin American dealer presence. The mix is broader and less exclusive than Frieze New York's.

| 2027 | ErwartetNot yet announced. The fair has run Thursday to Sunday in September at the Javits Center since 2021, and 2026 moved that run to the last week of the month. On the assumption that the 2026 move is permanent, 2027 falls on 23-26 September. If the fair reverts to early September the dates would be around 9-12 September instead, so this estimate carries real risk and must be replaced when Frieze announces. | |
| 2026 · 32nd edition | · 32nd edition | BestätigtThe 32nd edition runs 24-27 September 2026 at the Javits Center with more than 230 galleries. Trade reporting notes that the fair moved from its usual early-September slot to the last week of the month for this edition. The opening-day VIP preview arrangements had not been captured from an organizer page at the time of writing. |
