The Serpentine Summer Party

Prévu · Serpentine Pavilion 2027, Kensington Gardens

Serpentine's annual fundraiser, held one June evening inside that summer's Pavilion in Kensington Gardens. Invitation only.

The party has fallen on the fourth Tuesday of June in both of the editions we verified — Tuesday 24 June 2025 and Tuesday 23 June 2026 — and it is always staged in the summer's Pavilion, which opens in early June. The fourth Tuesday of June 2027 is 22 June. Because the evening is invitation-only, Serpentine publishes the date close to the event rather than months ahead, so this is an estimate and should be replaced when the 2027 Pavilion commission is announced.

Serpentine runs two free galleries in Kensington Gardens and commissions a temporary Pavilion on the lawn beside the southern one each summer, built by an architect who has not previously completed a building in England. The Summer Party is the institution's annual fundraiser and it is held in and around that year's Pavilion, on a Tuesday evening in late June, shortly after the structure opens.

Serpentine describes it as 'an invitation only event' and states that its Patrons receive access to it. There is no public sale, no published price and no waiting list — the gallery's own page simply recorded the most recent edition as fully sold out. Co-hosts are announced in advance each year alongside the gallery's chairman, chief executive and artistic director, and the evening is reported at length by the fashion and culture press the following morning. None of that reporting is repeated here.

What is genuinely public is the thing the party is held inside. The 2026 Pavilion, 'a serpentine' by the Mexico City practice LANZA atelier, is open free of charge from 6 June to 25 October 2026, and the galleries themselves are free all year. Park Nights, Serpentine's programme of performances and talks staged in the Pavilion from July to October, is ticketed at £10, or £7 concessions. For anyone who is not invited to the party, those are the ways to use the same building.

01Pourquoi c'est important

Serpentine's Pavilion commission has been the most consistently watched small-architecture programme in the world for a quarter of a century, and the Summer Party is the evening on which the art, architecture, fashion and film worlds acknowledge it in the same place. Its significance to the institution is financial: Serpentine's galleries are free, and a free gallery with a serious commissioning programme needs a fundraising night. In our reading the more interesting fact about the party is its relationship to the building. The Pavilion is the only major social fixture in London whose venue is different every year and is itself the subject, and the party exists partly to put several hundred people inside a structure that has to hold up to that. The honest note for a reader of this calendar is that the party cannot be attended, and that the Pavilion can, for five months, for nothing.

02La semaine environnante

Late June in London is the most congested week of the English calendar: Royal Ascot has just finished, Wimbledon begins the following Monday, and the Royal Academy's Summer Exhibition and the art and design trade's London fixtures are all open. Kensington Gardens is busy with ordinary park traffic and with Pavilion visitors, and on the evening of the party the immediate area around Serpentine South is closed off while the rest of the park stays open. Nothing else about the week changes because of it — this is a single evening in a large royal park.

03Quand arriver

Not applicable for a visitor; the party is invitation-only and lasts one evening. Anyone using the same week in London should arrive for the weekend before, take the Pavilion in daylight on a weekday morning when it is quietest, and stay through to the first days of Wimbledon.

04Où séjourner

For the Pavilion and the surrounding week, South Kensington, Knightsbridge and Bayswater put Kensington Gardens on your doorstep, with the Royal Albert Hall and the museums in the same quarter. Mayfair and Marylebone are a short ride east and better placed for the rest of the late-June calendar. The park is walkable from all of them.

05Accès et hospitalité

Serpentine states plainly that the Summer Party is an invitation-only event and that its Patrons receive access to it; the gallery's Patrons programme is the only published route, and membership enquiries go through Serpentine directly. No ticket is sold, no price is published and the most recent edition was recorded on the gallery's own page as fully sold out. Corporate involvement is by sponsorship and partnership with Serpentine, arranged with the institution. Everything else Serpentine does that summer is open: both galleries are free, the Pavilion is free from early June to late October, and the Park Nights programme inside the Pavilion is ticketed at £10, or £7 concessions.

06Où se déroule l'activité sociale

The public social life of a Serpentine summer is the Pavilion itself — the café inside it, the lawn around it and the walk along the Serpentine lake — plus Serpentine North across the bridge and the Kensington Gardens paths between them. The party is a closed event in the same place for one evening, and this record does not describe it.

07Comment s'y rendre

Aviation commercialeHeathrow (LHR) is the closest of London's airports to Kensington, about 45 minutes by road or by the Piccadilly line; Gatwick (LGW), Stansted (STN), Luton (LTN) and City (LCY) serve the rest.
RailPaddington is the nearest main-line terminus, ten minutes from the park; Eurostar arrives at St Pancras International. Lancaster Gate, Queensway, South Kensington and Knightsbridge are the nearest Underground stations to the Pavilion.
VoitureUnnecessary. Kensington Gardens has no public parking, the congestion charge applies on the approaches and the park's roads are closed to traffic. Drop-off on the evening of the party is managed by the gallery.
Aviation privéeFarnborough and Luton are the principal business-aviation fields for London, both around an hour from central London by road; Biggin Hill serves the south-east.

08Informations pratiques

Tenue vestimentaireThe party is a photographed London summer evening and dresses like one, which in practice means cocktail with considerable latitude; it is held partly outdoors on grass, in a park, in an English June, so the practical constraints are heels on lawn and a sudden change in the weather. The Pavilion in daylight asks nothing of visitors at all.
MétéoLate June in London is mild and unreliable: daytime temperatures typically around 21 degrees Celsius, evenings in the mid-teens, long daylight until well after nine, and a real chance of rain on any given day. The Pavilion is open-sided by convention, so the weather is part of the experience. No meteorological normals were retrieved for this record.
Se déplacerWalk or take the Underground. The Pavilion is about ten minutes on foot from Lancaster Gate, South Kensington or Knightsbridge, and the park closes at dusk outside event hours. Traffic on Kensington Gore and the Bayswater Road is heavy on summer evenings.
HôtelsLate June is peak London and the pressure comes from Wimbledon and the wider season rather than from this evening. Kensington and Knightsbridge rooms commit two to three months ahead for that fortnight.
RestaurantsThe party feeds its own guests and has no effect on London's tables. For the surrounding week, the restaurants of Kensington, Notting Hill and Mayfair are at their busiest and worth booking several weeks ahead.
Délais de réservationNot applicable to the party. Park Nights tickets go on sale through Serpentine ahead of each session and the popular ones sell out; the Pavilion needs no booking at all.
BilletsThere is no ticket to the Summer Party and none is sold at any price. Serpentine's free offer is substantial by comparison: both galleries are free year-round, and the Pavilion is free from 6 June to 25 October 2026. The Park Nights programme inside the Pavilion, July to October 2026, is ticketed by Serpentine at £10, or £7 concessions.
HospitalitéSerpentine publishes no hospitality tiers for the party. Support runs through the Patrons programme, trusteeship and corporate partnership, all arranged with the institution. The Pavilion commission itself carries named supporters each year, who are credited by the gallery rather than sold hospitality at the party.

09Historique

Serpentine has held a summer fundraiser in Kensington Gardens for decades, and its character changed when the Pavilion commission began in 2000 and gave the evening a new building each year. The Pavilion programme's rule — an architect without a completed building in England — has produced a long sequence of first British works and made the commission a reliable annual subject for the architecture press. The party has grown alongside it into a fixture of the London late-June week, and in recent years Serpentine has paired the gallery's own leadership with a single artist or group of cultural figures as co-hosts. We did not establish the year of the first Summer Party and the founded_year field is left null for that reason.

10Qui s'y trouve

Serpentine's Patrons and trustees, who are the reason the evening exists; artists and architects connected to the gallery's programme, including the Pavilion's designers; museum directors, curators and collectors; figures from fashion, film and music; and the gallery's corporate partners. No members of the public.
