The Rolex Swan Cup is a one-make regatta open only to yachts built by the Finnish yard Nautor Swan, racing in class divisions that span brand-new performance models and boats built decades ago. That range is the event's defining feature: a Swan 36 from the 1970s and a modern Swan 120 can both be on the water the same week, sorted by class and handicap rather than raced against each other directly. Fleets in recent editions have run to well over a hundred entries, drawn from Swan owners' associations across Europe and North America, which the organizer and Nautor Swan describe as one of the largest single-brand yacht gatherings anywhere.

Racing alternates coastal courses along the Costa Smeralda with windward-leeward racing off Porto Cervo, run from the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda over a full week that includes a rest day. The event doubles as a reunion for the Swan ownership community: Nautor Swan uses the week for its own anniversary events, and the 2024 and 2026 editions were built around the fortieth anniversary of the Rolex-YCCS-Nautor Swan partnership and the yard's sixtieth year respectively.

01Perché è rilevante

No other regatta gathers Nautor Swan's full range in one place, and because the class runs every genuration of the yard's design history side by side, the week functions as an informal museum of performance-cruiser design as much as a competition. Its biennial rhythm — alternating years with the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup's annual date at the same club — keeps entries concentrated rather than splitting the Swan fleet's attention every year, which is part of why the event has held its scale since 1980.

02La settimana intorno all'evento

Mid-September on the Costa Smeralda is already busy by the time the Swan Cup opens, since the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup finishes at the same club the weekend before; in even years a portion of the marine trade, media and support crews simply stay on for a second week, and Porto Cervo's small hotel and restaurant stock runs continuously full through both events. The resort is in its last full fortnight before many properties close for the season in early October.

03Quando arrivare

Arrive the Sunday racing begins if following the fleet from the Maxi Cup the week before; for a visitor coming only for the Swan Cup, Tuesday or Wednesday covers the core racing days and the mid-week rest day, with the final races and prizegiving on the Saturday.

04Dove alloggiare

The same trade-offs apply as for the club's other September regattas: Porto Cervo village for proximity to the marina and clubhouse, Cala di Volpe and Romazzino a short drive away, and Baja Sardinia, Cannigione and Palau for lower cost and a twenty-to-thirty-minute commute. Book earlier than usual, since the back-to-back Maxi Cup and Swan Cup fortnight is the busiest stretch of the Costa Smeralda's September.

05Accesso e ospitalità

Entry is restricted to Nautor Swan yachts registered through the class associations and the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda's Notice of Race. There is no admission charge to the marina, the village or the coast, and no public ticket, since the club's facilities and the prizegiving are for members, competitors and their guests only.

06Dove si svolge l'attività sociale

As with the club's other regattas, the Molo Vecchio quay and the Piazzetta above it carry the week's public life — crews and owners moving between the fleet and the village, and the cafés and restaurants taking the evening trade. The Yacht Club Costa Smeralda building is not open to the public, though the quay in front of it is.

07Come arrivare

Aviazione commercialeOlbia Costa Smeralda (OLB) is about 30 kilometres away; schedules are still near their late-summer peak in mid-September.
TrenoNone reaches the Costa Smeralda; Olbia is the nearest station, serving Cagliari and Sassari only.
AutoNecessary for getting around the resort; the SP59 and SP94 connect Porto Cervo to Olbia via the SS125.
Aviazione privataOlbia Costa Smeralda handles business aviation, with slot and parking pressure carried over from the Maxi Cup the week before.
ElicotteroTransfers run from Olbia and the mainland to sites serving the resort, heavily booked across the two-week Maxi Cup/Swan Cup stretch in even years.
MarineMarina di Porto Cervo takes the Swan fleet on the Molo Vecchio and is at capacity; Poltu Quatu, Cala Bitta and Cannigione are the nearest alternatives, and anchorages in the La Maddalena archipelago remain in use.

08Aspetti pratici

AbbigliamentoSailing kit by day; smart evening dress in the village and a jacket expected at the club, consistent with Porto Cervo's other September regattas.
MeteoMid-September in northern Sardinia is typically warm and dry, with daytime temperatures in the mid-to-high twenties Celsius and the sea near its annual warmest; the maestrale from the northwest is the main wind to plan around. No station normals were sourced for this record.
Come spostarsiRent a car at Olbia and book it early, since the Maxi Cup the week before already puts pressure on the resort's limited rental stock.
HotelThe back-to-back Maxi Cup and Swan Cup fortnight in even years is the Costa Smeralda's busiest September stretch; book Porto Cervo itself months ahead, and expect the outlying bays to fill faster than usual too.
RistorantiPorto Cervo's restaurants run at capacity through both regattas in even years; reserve well ahead, with Cannigione and Baja Sardinia as more available alternatives.
Tempistiche di prenotazioneHotels three to five months ahead for the regatta fortnight; restaurants one to two weeks ahead; flights into Olbia should be booked as early as the dates allow, since mid-September schedules are still close to their summer peak.
BigliettiThere is no ticket and no admission charge. Racing entry is restricted to Nautor Swan yachts through the class associations and the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda's Notice of Race; entry fees are set there and are not quoted here.
OspitalitàThe organizer sells no public hospitality. Nautor Swan's anniversary functions, class dinners and the club's own entertaining during the week are private, and we describe none of them from the inside.

09Storia

The regatta was established in 1980 by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda in partnership with Nautor Swan, the yard founded by Pekka Koskenkylä in 1966, with Rolex as title sponsor from early on. It has run on a two-year cycle ever since, sharing its venue and much of its organizing structure with the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup, which the same club runs annually and which immediately precedes the Swan Cup in the years the two coincide.

10Chi è presente

Nautor Swan owners across the yard's full production history, many racing their own boats; Swan owners' association members; Nautor Swan's own executives and design staff; professional racing crew hired for the week; and the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda's membership.
