The Giraglia pairs four days of inshore racing in the Gulf of Saint-Tropez with a single long offshore race that gives the event its name: a course of roughly 240 nautical miles that leaves the French Riviera, rounds the Giraglia rock off the northern tip of Corsica, and finishes at Genoa. The fleet ranges from cruiser-racers to grand-prix maxis, entered through the two organizing clubs, and the offshore leg in particular has a reputation among Mediterranean sailors as a genuine test — the passage past Corsica can turn from a fast reach into a windless drift with little warning, and finishing times have varied by more than a day between fast and slow years.

The event's title sponsor has changed twice in its history. Rolex backed the race for more than two decades, and Loro Piana took over the naming rights in 2024; the organizing structure and the course have stayed constant through both arrangements. Ashore, the week runs first from the Société Nautique de Saint-Tropez, whose harborside clubhouse hosts the inshore regatta, the briefings and the start, and finally from the Yacht Club Italiano's own clubhouse in Genoa, where the fleet arrives to a formal prizegiving that closes the event.

01Perché è rilevante

At more than seventy years old, this is the senior offshore classic of the Mediterranean, older than the Mediterranean's yacht shows and most of its regattas, and the only race on the region's calendar that regularly forces a maxi fleet to sail through an open-water night passage rather than a series of coastal courses. Its standing rests on that history and on the course itself rather than on scale: the fleet is smaller than Porto Cervo's regattas and the event draws less general public attention than Saint-Tropez's own Voiles later in the season, but among distance-racing sailors it carries particular weight.

02La settimana intorno all'evento

Mid-June in Saint-Tropez falls before the town's peak summer season, so the harbor and the streets around the Vieux Port are busy with the regatta fleet without the full crowding of July and August. Genoa, at the other end of the course, sees a shorter but concentrated burst of activity around the finish and the prizegiving, with the fleet's arrival staggered over one or two days depending on conditions at sea.

03Quando arrivare

For the inshore days, Friday or Saturday gives time to see the fleet assemble in Saint-Tropez before racing begins on the Saturday or Sunday; the offshore start is the week's most photographed moment and draws spectator boats out of the harbor. Following the race to its Genoa finish requires travelling separately, since the two ends of the course are a full day apart by road or rail.

04Dove alloggiare

In Saint-Tropez, the Vieux Port and the streets immediately behind it put visitors within walking distance of the clubhouse and the start; Ramatuelle and Gassin, a short drive inland, are quieter and cost less. In Genoa, the old port and the Porto Antico area near the Yacht Club Italiano are the natural base for the finish and the prizegiving.

05Accesso e ospitalità

Entry is open to registered yachts meeting the organizers' rating and safety requirements, applied for through the Yacht Club Italiano and the Société Nautique de Saint-Tropez under the published Notice of Race. There is no admission charge to watch from the harbor or the shore at either end of the course, and no public ticket, since nothing during the week is enclosed.

06Dove si svolge l'attività sociale

In Saint-Tropez, the quay along the Vieux Port and the terraces of the cafés facing it are where the fleet and the crowd both gather before the start; the Société Nautique's own building is club territory rather than public space. In Genoa, the Porto Antico waterfront around the Yacht Club Italiano is the equivalent gathering point for the finish and the prizegiving.

07Come arrivare

Aviazione commercialeNice Côte d'Azur (NCE) is roughly an hour by road from Saint-Tropez; Genoa's Cristoforo Colombo Airport (GOA) serves the finish directly.
TrenoSaint-Tropez has no station of its own; Saint-Raphaël and Toulon, both roughly an hour away by road, are the nearest connections to the French rail network. Genoa's Piazza Principe and Brignole stations sit on the main Italian line.
AutoThe A8 autoroute and the coast road serve Saint-Tropez; Genoa is reached via the A10/A12 motorways. The two ends of the course are not practically connected by a same-day drive during the event.
Aviazione privataNice and Cannes-Mandelieu serve the Saint-Tropez end; Genoa's airport handles business aviation for the finish.
ElicotteroScheduled and on-demand helicopter transfers connect Nice and Cannes to the Saint-Tropez area; no equivalent shuttle is documented for the Genoa finish.
MarineThe Vieux Port in Saint-Tropez and Port Grimaud nearby serve the start; the Porto Antico marinas serve the finish in Genoa. Berths are limited at both ends during the event and should be arranged well ahead through the port authorities.

08Aspetti pratici

AbbigliamentoSailing kit for the inshore days and the start; Saint-Tropez's harborside cafés run casual by day and smart by evening, and Genoa's prizegiving is a club occasion calling for smart dress.
MeteoMid-June on the French and Italian Riviera is generally warm and settled, with daytime temperatures in the low-to-mid twenties Celsius; the offshore leg's difficulty comes less from heavy weather than from the Ligurian Sea's tendency to fall light and shifty overnight. No station normals were sourced for this record.
Come spostarsiA car is the practical way to reach Saint-Tropez, which has no rail link; public transport within the town is limited and best supplemented by walking or the seasonal shuttle boats across the bay.
HotelSaint-Tropez in mid-June is busy but short of its July-August peak, and rooms are easier to find than during Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez later in the season; booking a few months ahead is still advisable.
RistorantiReserve ahead in Saint-Tropez for the regatta's start days, when the harborside restaurants fill with crews and spectators; Genoa's Porto Antico restaurants see a shorter, sharper rush around the finish.
Tempistiche di prenotazioneHotels two to four months ahead for Saint-Tropez; marina berths for competing or spectating boats should be arranged with the port authority as early as possible; restaurants a week or two ahead.
BigliettiThere is no ticket and no admission charge at either end of the course. Racing entry is through the Yacht Club Italiano and the Société Nautique de Saint-Tropez under the Notice of Race; entry fees are set there and are not quoted here.
OspitalitàThe organizing clubs sell no public hospitality package. The prizegiving in Genoa and the clubs' own dinners during the week are for competitors and members; Loro Piana's and other partners' entertaining is private and is not described here.

09Storia

The race was founded in 1953 by the Yacht Club Italiano and the Yacht Club de France, with the Société Nautique de Saint-Tropez joining as a organizing partner; the Yacht Club Italiano itself dates to 1879, making it one of the oldest sailing clubs on the Mediterranean. Rolex's sponsorship began in the late 1990s and continued for roughly two decades and a half; reporting is inconsistent on the exact year the watchmaker's name entered the race's title, with one source citing 1997 and another describing a change in title structure from 2018, a discrepancy an editor should resolve against the clubs' own archives. Loro Piana became title sponsor in 2024, the same year the fashion house consolidated its yachting sponsorships across the Mediterranean.

10Chi è presente

Offshore and grand-prix sailing owners and their crews, drawn from French and Italian yacht clubs in particular; professional racing sailors hired for the offshore leg; the two organizing clubs' memberships; and a smaller marine-trade and media presence than the Sardinia or Riviera shows draw.
