Four days inside a sixteenth-century fortress in Florence where the menswear season opens: around 750 brands and some 11,000 buyers.

Pitti Uomo is a trade fair, not a runway week, and that is the point of it. Twice a year around 750 menswear brands take stands inside the Fortezza da Basso, the sixteenth-century fortification on the edge of central Florence, and the buyers of the world's menswear floors work their way through it over four days before travelling north to the Milan and Paris shows. Pitti Immagine reported more than 740 exhibitors, 11,030 buyers and over 14,500 visitors for the June 2026 edition, and 758 exhibiting brands in January.
The fair is organized by product and by register rather than by prestige: classic tailoring in one pavilion, contemporary and research labels in another, sportswear, outerwear, shoes, accessories, and in recent editions a fragrance and beauty section. National delegations take collective stands - Korea, Japan and China have all had organized presences, as have the French and Spanish trade bodies - which makes the Fortezza one of the few places the global menswear supply chain is physically assembled. Each edition also invites a small number of guest designers to stage a show or an installation, which is the only runway element and the part the fashion press covers.
What Pitti is best known for outside the trade is what happens in the courtyards. The Fortezza's open spaces between pavilions function as an unofficial open-air set, with photographers working the arrivals of exhibitors and buyers who dress for it. It has produced a recognizable annual genre of menswear photography and is the reason the fair is visible to people who will never buy a wholesale order.
01Por que importa
Pitti is where the menswear season is actually bought. The runway weeks in Milan and Paris set the editorial agenda; the orders that fill shop floors in forty countries are written in Florence, by buyers who see several hundred brands in four days. For the Italian manufacturing districts that supply much of European menswear, it is the single most important commercial week of the half-year, and the fair's buyer counts are treated as an industry indicator.
In our reading, Pitti's durability rests on the thing that makes it unglamorous: it is a fair with a floorplan. Nobody has to be invited. A buyer registers, a brand books a stand, and the transaction is legible. That is also why it sits first in the menswear round - the efficient trip is Florence, then a ninety-minute train to Milan, then Paris, and Pitti is the only stop on it that will admit you on the strength of a business card.
02A semana ao seu redor
Florence in mid-January is as quiet as the city gets, and Pitti is the reason its hotels are full. In June the fair lands in high tourist season, which makes it the harder edition logistically: the Fortezza is a fifteen-minute walk from the Duomo through streets already crowded, and the combination of fair traffic and summer visitors makes the city genuinely congested for four days.
The fair programmes events into the city rather than only the venue - guest-designer shows, installations and presentations in palazzi and churches around the centre - and Pitti publishes them on its own site. Shuttle buses run between the Fortezza and the main hotel areas. The practical texture of the week is walking: the Fortezza, the Santa Maria Novella station behind it, and the restaurants of San Lorenzo and the Oltrarno form a small triangle that most of the fair's population moves around on foot.
03Quando chegar
Arrive the evening before the opening and stay three nights. The first two days are the serious buying days and the busiest; the fourth is short and thin. Buyers continuing to Milan leave on the final afternoon, because Milan's menswear week opens the day Pitti closes or the day after - in January 2027 the two meet on the 15th. Anyone visiting Florence for its own sake should avoid the June edition, when the city is at its fullest, and is better off in January, when Pitti is the only thing happening.
04Onde se hospedar
The area around Santa Maria Novella station and the Fortezza is the practical choice and puts the fair at walking distance; it is also the least attractive part of central Florence. The historic centre between the Duomo and the Arno is a fifteen to twenty minute walk and is where most of the fair's evening activity happens. The Oltrarno, across the river in San Frediano and Santo Spirito, is quieter, better for eating and a twenty-five minute walk. Hotels in the Tuscan hills and at Fiesole suit anyone with a car. January rooms are obtainable at short notice; June requires months.
05Acesso e hospitalidade
This is a trade fair with a controlled but open door: Pitti Immagine admits registered buyers, agents, suppliers and accredited press, and its site carries a visitor registration process, entrance-pass purchase, opening hours and entry instructions. It is not open to the general public, and there is no consumer ticket. Press accreditation is handled separately. Prices for entrance passes are published on the organizer's own ticketing pages, which were not read for this record, and none are quoted here. The fair runs shuttle buses, cloakrooms, free parking and a hotel-booking service, all listed under Info and Services on its site.
06Onde ocorre a actividade social
The Fortezza's courtyards are the fair's public stage and anyone with a pass can stand in them; they are where the photography happens and where most of the day's conversations occur. Outside the venue, the bars and restaurants of the via Faenza and San Lorenzo absorb the lunch and early-evening trade, and the centre around the Piazza della Repubblica and the via Tornabuoni takes the dinners. Guest-designer shows and installations are staged in palazzi and cloisters around the city and are listed in the fair's own programme; some are open to pass holders. The Oltrarno, across the Ponte Vecchio, is where the fair's younger population eats and drinks. Brand dinners are private and are not described here.

08Aspectos práticos
09Histórico
The Pitti fairs grew out of the Florentine fashion shows staged from the early 1950s by Giovanni Battista Giorgini, who brought American buyers to Italy and whose presentations in the Sala Bianca of the Palazzo Pitti gave the name. Italian womenswear subsequently migrated to Milan, and Florence kept the trade-fair function, formalizing a dedicated menswear fair in the 1970s and moving it into the Fortezza da Basso.
Pitti Immagine, the company that now runs it, also operates Pitti Bimbo for childrenswear, Pitti Filati for yarns, Fragranze for research perfumery and Taste for food, each on its own dates at the same venue - a calendar that keeps the Fortezza in use for most of the year. The most visible change in recent editions has been the fair's move toward research and newness: guest designers, the new beauty and fragrance area, and an increasing share of stands taken by labels under ten years old, which the organizer frames explicitly as the reason buyers still travel.
10Quem está presente
Menswear buyers from department stores, independent retailers and e-commerce platforms, who are the fair's reason for existing and whom Pitti counts publicly; sales agents and distributors, a large group at a fair organized around wholesale; Italian and international manufacturers and suppliers; national trade delegations, with organized Korean, Japanese, Chinese, French and Spanish presences in recent editions; menswear press and a dense population of photographers; and the exhibitors themselves, around 750 brands' worth of staff.
