Five days between New York and Milan, run by the British Fashion Council with no central venue and the most open public programme of the four.

Second in the cycle and the smallest of the four by commercial volume, London has made a method out of the disadvantage. The British Fashion Council sets the schedule, and since February 2020 it has abandoned a central venue altogether: shows are staged wherever designers can get a building, and londonfashionweek.co.uk serves as the official hub, free to read year-round and the only complete record of who is showing where.
The week's character has always been its emerging roster. The first edition, in February 1984, carried fifteen shows; the present calendar mixes a handful of large houses with a long tail of labels supported through the council's NEWGEN and designer fund programmes, which is why London is where the other three cities look for names. It is also the most policy-forward of the four: London was the first major fashion week to go fur-free, in September 2018, and added a ban on exotic skins in 2025. Menswear no longer runs as a separate London week; since 2025 the council has channelled that effort into Paris-based showrooms instead.
The September 2026 edition arrives inside something larger. Fashion Britain, the council's initiative under its Strategy 2030, launched that month with a programme of more than a thousand public events across Bristol, Dundee, Edinburgh, Liverpool, London, Manchester and Newcastle, with flagship exhibitions and activations at V&A Dundee, the National Gallery, the Baltic in Gateshead, the Walker in Liverpool, Manchester Art Gallery, M Shed in Bristol and East Bank in London. That makes this the one week on the international fashion calendar with a genuinely national, genuinely public layer attached to it.
01Warum es relevant ist
London's commercial weight is modest beside Milan's or Paris's - the long-quoted figures are around five thousand press and buyers and orders above a hundred million pounds, both of which are dated - but its function in the system is clear. It is the development ground. The designers who end up running French and Italian houses are disproportionately British-trained and first shown in London, and the council's funding structures are built explicitly to produce that outcome.
In our reading, the Fashion Britain programme is the most significant thing to happen to this week in a decade, and not for fashion reasons. By putting a thousand public events in seven cities around the same days as the shows, the council has made the week something a person who will never see a runway can take part in. No other fashion capital has attempted that.
02Die Woche darum
September in London is crowded. The London Design Festival runs 12 to 20 September 2026 and overlaps the fashion week entirely, which means the design and fashion audiences share the city for four days; Frieze London and the October auctions follow a few weeks later. The February edition stands alone in the year's quietest month for London tourism and is correspondingly easy on hotels and restaurants.
With no central venue there is no single district to avoid. Shows cluster in Shoreditch and the East End, around the Strand and Somerset House, in Mayfair and around South Kensington, and the traffic effect is therefore dispersed and mild; the Underground is unaffected. What changes is the evening: the Mayfair and Shoreditch restaurants are committed to brand dinners from the Thursday, and the members' clubs of Soho and Mayfair are the industry's working rooms for the week. In September 2026 the Fashion Britain programme adds a layer of ticketed and free public events at major museums and galleries in London and six other cities.
03Anreisezeitpunkt
Arrive Wednesday evening for a Thursday start and leave Monday evening or Tuesday morning for Milan. The Friday and Saturday carry the largest shows; Monday is short and thinly attended. Anyone coming for the city rather than the calendar should overlap the September edition with the London Design Festival, which is ticketed and open, and should treat the Fashion Britain programme as the part of fashion week they can actually attend.
04Unterkunft
Mayfair and St James's put you closest to the showrooms and the west-end venues, with Claridge's and the Connaught as the landmarks of that area rather than recommendations; they are also where most of the week's dinners happen. Shoreditch and Spitalfields are closer to the East End show venues and to the younger end of the calendar. Covent Garden and the Strand suit a schedule built around Somerset House and 180 Strand. South Kensington is quiet and well-connected. London's hotel stock is large enough that fashion week alone does not fill it; the September overlap with the design festival is the tighter week.
05Zugang und Hospitality
Shows are by invitation from the designer or their agency. The British Fashion Council grants press and buyer accreditation on application ahead of each season and publishes the schedule on londonfashionweek.co.uk, which is free and open to anyone. There is no public ticket to any show and no hospitality programme. The Fashion Britain events are the exception and are handled by the institutions hosting them, ticketed or free according to each venue. The council's designer application process for a place on the schedule runs through its own site.
06Wo das gesellschaftliche Geschehen stattfindet
The observable week is spread thin, which suits London. Photographers and crowds gather outside the Strand and Somerset House venues, on Brewer Street and Berwick Street in Soho, and outside the East End warehouses in use that season. The Soho and Mayfair members' clubs and the bars of Claridge's and the Connaught are the industry's evening rooms; Shoreditch and Dalston take the younger crowd. Retail is part of the week in a way it is not elsewhere: the Dover Street Market, the Mayfair flagships and Selfridges and Liberty run windows, events and late openings that anyone can walk into. In September 2026 the Fashion Britain venues - the National Gallery, East Bank and six other cities' institutions - are the genuinely public programme.

09Geschichte
London Fashion Week was first held in February 1984, organized by the British Fashion Council, with fifteen shows in a car park at the Commonwealth Institute. Its venue history reads as a tour of the city: the Duke of York's Barracks, Olympia, the Ritz, the Natural History Museum, Battersea Park, Somerset House from 2009, the Brewer Street car park in 2015, and 180 Strand from 2017. In February 2020 the council stopped designating a single venue and adopted a hybrid digital and physical model, which it has kept.
Two moments gave the week outsized influence. In 2009 a London house livestreamed its show and launched the see-now-buy-now model, which the rest of the industry spent a decade arguing about. And in September 2018 London became the first of the four to go fur-free, a decision New York adopted for the 2026 season, eight years later.
10Wer ist dort
British and international buyers, though in smaller numbers than at Milan or Paris; editors and critics from the British titles and the international press corps moving between New York and Milan; the council's own NEWGEN and designer-fund cohort and the people who assess them; fashion school staff and students from Central Saint Martins, the London College of Fashion and the Royal College of Art, whose presence shapes the week's character; stylists, casting agencies and photographers; and, during the Fashion Britain programme, a general public in seven cities.
