Couture week is the smallest fixture on the international fashion calendar and, measured by who is in the room, the most concentrated. Four days, roughly thirty houses, a clientele the trade has long estimated in the low thousands worldwide. Nothing shown is for sale off a rail: a couture garment is cut for one body, fitted at least once, and made in an atelier in Paris by hand. The July 2026 calendar listed about 31 houses in three tiers, and reading those tiers is the quickest way to understand the week. A handful carry the haute couture appellation itself, which in France is legally protected and granted annually against criteria first codified in 1945 on the recommendation of the Chambre Syndicale; a second group are corresponding members, houses based outside France that meet comparable standards; the largest group are guest houses, invited for a season at a time.

The geography is different from ready-to-wear. Couture shows are small enough to be held in a house's own salons, and many are: rooms of a hundred and fifty seats where the clothes pass within arm's reach. The larger houses build sets at the Grand Palais, the Musee Rodin or the Petit Palais, and those are the shows that generate the images. The rest of a house's couture week happens invisibly, in appointments with private clients who come to Paris for the fittings that follow.

The federation also runs a separate haute joaillerie calendar across the same days, with the Place Vendome and rue de la Paix jewellers presenting high jewellery collections to the same audience, plus an events column that carries the week's exhibitions. In July 2026 that column included a Christian Dior exhibition, a Roger Vivier presentation and Sidaction's Diner de la Mode, the French AIDS charity's annual fashion-industry dinner.

01لماذا يهم

Couture is where the technical capacity of the industry is kept alive. The embroidery, feather, pleating, millinery and bootmaking houses that supply it exist because somebody still orders work at this level, and most of what eventually appears in ready-to-wear was developed in an atelier first. It is also the week on which the largest houses make their strongest claim to be something other than accessory businesses, which is why couture collections are shown to press and clients even when the direct revenue is modest against the group's total.

In our reading, couture week is the one fixture where the calendar's usual measures fail. There is no attendance figure worth citing, no order book to report, and no public. What there is instead is the highest client-to-guest ratio in fashion, a legally defined standard of work, and four days in Paris in which the appellation is either justified or it is not. Readers who want to see the result do not need an invitation: the exhibitions that accompany the week, and the Palais Galliera and Musee des Arts Decoratifs collections year-round, carry the same garments.

02الأسبوع المحيط به

The January edition is the busier of the two in calendar terms, because it sits immediately behind Paris menswear: menswear closes on the Sunday, couture opens on the Monday, and a large part of the press corps simply stays in the city for a second week. For 2027 the federation has set menswear for January 19 to 24 and couture for January 25 to 28, which makes a ten-day Paris trip the efficient way to cover both. The July edition stands alone in a quiet city, a fortnight after Paris menswear and a week before the August closures begin.

Neither edition moves Paris the way late September does. Couture is too small to be visible from the street except at the four or five large show sites, where the crowd of photographers and onlookers is the only outward sign. What does change is the rue Cambon, the avenue Montaigne and the Place Vendome, where the salons and jewellers are working to appointment from early morning, and the airport and hotel traffic in private-client arrivals, which the trade press reports but which is invisible to anybody else. Both editions fall outside the tourist peaks, so the city is comparatively easy.

Press and buyers arrive the day before the opening and stay the full four days; there is no part of the calendar that can be skipped because it is all front-loaded with major houses. For the January edition the sensible trip is the ten days that cover menswear and couture together, arriving the weekend before menswear opens. Private clients come for the fittings that follow rather than for the shows themselves, often returning several weeks later. For anyone visiting Paris in late January or early July for other reasons, the week is a good one to be in the city: it is off-peak, the museums are programming fashion exhibitions, and the restaurants are reachable.

04أماكن الإقامة

The first and eighth arrondissements are the couture quarter in the literal sense - the ateliers, the salons and the jewellers are there - and the Place Vendome, the rue Saint-Honore and the avenue Montaigne define it. The Ritz, the Crillon and the Plaza Athenee are the landmark addresses of that geography and function as the week's daytime meeting rooms; they are named here as landmarks, not as recommendations. Saint-Germain and the seventh suit anyone whose week is weighted toward the Musee Rodin and the Left Bank show sites. January and early July are both low-demand periods in Paris by the standards of the year, so the constraint is preference rather than availability.

05الوصول والضيافة

This is the most closed week on the fashion calendar. Couture shows are by invitation from the house, and the invitation list is built around private clients first and press second; there is no accreditation route that produces a seat at a major couture show for a journalist without a relationship, and no public sale of any kind. The FHCM grants press accreditation for the season and publishes the official calendar free on its own site, which is the only document that tells an outsider what happened when. The haute joaillerie presentations are appointment-only. The events column of the calendar is the sole publicly visible layer: in July 2026 it carried a Christian Dior exhibition running the Tuesday to the Thursday, a Roger Vivier presentation, and Sidaction's Diner de la Mode, the last of these a charity dinner by invitation.

06مواضع النشاط الاجتماعي

The observable week is concentrated on four or five addresses. The forecourt of the Musee Rodin on the rue de Varenne, the steps of the Petit Palais, the avenue Winston-Churchill beside the Grand Palais and the rue Cambon behind the Ritz are where crowds gather to watch arrivals, and they are free to stand in. The terraces of the Place Vendome hotels and the cafes of the rue Saint-Honore carry the daytime traffic between appointments. In the evenings the activity is private and mostly in house salons and hotel dining rooms. For a visitor, the substitutes are real: the Palais Galliera, the Musee des Arts Decoratifs and the Bourdelle and Yves Saint Laurent museums all hold couture in their permanent collections and are open to anyone.

07كيفية الوصول

الطيران التجاريCharles de Gaulle (CDG) for long-haul, Orly (ORY) for short-haul and domestic. Both are straightforward in January and early July, neither of which is a peak arrival period for Paris.
قطارEurostar from London to Gare du Nord in about two and a quarter hours, TGV from Milan, Geneva, Brussels and Amsterdam. Rail is the usual way the press corps moves between the menswear and couture weeks and the other European capitals.
سيارةCentral Paris is restricted and slow; the show sites are all within the inner arrondissements and a car is useful only for moving between appointments with luggage or garments. Street parking near show venues is suspended when permits are issued.
الطيران الخاصParis-Le Bourget, twenty minutes north of the centre, is Europe's busiest business-aviation airport and is the standard arrival point for private clients during couture week.
المروحيةParis-Issy-les-Moulineaux heliport takes on-demand transfers; movements over central Paris are restricted and helicopters are not a practical way to move within the city.

08الجوانب العملية

الزي الرسميThe most formally dressed week in fashion, and the only one at which a significant proportion of the audience is wearing garments made for them. Press dress soberly and well; clients dress as clients. January in Paris is cold and wet and the salons are warm, which makes a good coat and layers the practical answer. Nothing about the week requires evening dress during the day, and the private dinners that do are not open.
الطقسLate January in Paris is cold and grey, with daytime highs commonly between 5 and 9 degrees Celsius and frequent rain; early July is warm, often in the mid to high twenties, with long evenings. No station normals were sourced for this record.
التنقل والتوجهBoth editions fall outside Paris's congested periods, and the Metro covers every show site: lines 1, 8, 13 and 14 reach the Grand Palais, the Musee Rodin, the Place Vendome and the avenue Montaigne. Short street closures are issued per show. Taxis are easier than during ready-to-wear because the volume of simultaneous shows is far lower.
الفنادقLate January and early July are comparatively soft in the Paris hotel market, and couture week is too small to change that. Rooms in the first and eighth arrondissements tighten for the four nights but remain obtainable a few weeks out. Houses block suites for clients rather than whole floors for staff, which is why the pressure is narrow.
المطاعمThe restaurants around the Place Vendome, the rue Saint-Honore and the avenue Montaigne are committed to house lunches and dinners across the four days, and the small number the industry favours are difficult. Elsewhere in the city the week is invisible and tables are available at normal notice.
توقيت الحجزHotels four to six weeks ahead is generally enough for either edition. Restaurant tables in the first and eighth arrondissements two to three weeks ahead for the couture days. Press accreditation with the FHCM closes several weeks before each season opens.
التذاكرNo tickets exist. Shows are by house invitation, haute joaillerie presentations are by appointment, and the federation sells nothing. The official calendar is published free on fhcm.paris and past calendars remain downloadable, which makes it the best public record of each season. Museum exhibitions that coincide with the week are ticketed by the museums themselves.
الضيافةThere is no hospitality programme, no package and no published price. The only structured access the federation controls is press and professional accreditation. Everything else - the seat, the salon appointment, the fitting, the dinner - is allocated by a house to its own client or editor.

09التاريخ

The Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture was founded in 1868 to define and police what couture meant, a generation after Charles Frederick Worth established the practice of a named designer presenting seasonal collections on live models in Paris. The terms hardened in 1945, when criteria were written requiring a house to maintain an atelier in Paris with a substantial permanent staff, to make to order with fittings for private clients, and to present a minimum number of day and evening looks each season. The appellation has been administered against those criteria, progressively relaxed, ever since.

The membership has contracted sharply over the century. Dozens of houses held the appellation in the 1940s; a handful hold it now, and the calendar is sustained by the corresponding and guest categories the federation introduced to admit houses from outside France and to give newer names a platform. That change rescued the week: the guest list of the past decade has brought in designers from Lebanon, India, the Netherlands, Japan, Australia, Switzerland and Saudi Arabia, and the result is a calendar with more houses on it than twenty years ago rather than fewer. The federation took its present name, covering couture, womenswear and menswear together, in 2017.

Private couture clients and their advisers, who are the reason the week exists and are never named; the houses' own couture directors, premieres and atelier staff; a small and long-established critical press corps; high jewellery houses and their clients on the parallel calendar; museum curators and costume historians; and the specialist suppliers - embroiderers, feather workers, pleaters, milliners, shoemakers - whose order books depend on these four days.
