The Palio is a horse race that lasts about ninety seconds and a civic institution that occupies the rest of the year. Siena is divided into seventeen contrade, wards with their own territories, colours, churches, museums, patron saints and hereditary membership, and the Palio is the competition between them. Ten run in each race: the seven that did not run in that month the previous year, plus three drawn by lot. Horses are assigned to the contrade by a separate lottery three days before, which is the moment the whole thing becomes real, because a contrada's fortunes for the year are settled by which animal it draws.

The race itself is run on a ring of tufa laid over the stone of the Piazza del Campo, three laps, bareback, with padded barriers at the two dangerous corners of San Martino and the Casato. Jockeys are hired professionals, not Sienese, and may be replaced or bought off; alliances and deals between contrade are part of the sport and are conducted openly. A horse that loses its rider can still win, which happens often enough to have its own word.

Before the race comes the Corteo Storico, a procession of some six hundred people in fifteenth-century dress with flag-throwers, drummers and the war chariot carrying the drappellone - the hand-painted silk banner, commissioned from a different artist each time, which is the only prize. The winning contrada celebrates for months, and the loss is felt just as long.

01Por que importa

The Palio is not a historical re-enactment and that is the single thing most visitors get wrong about it. The contrade are living institutions with real membership, real property and real rivalries; babies are baptized into them, and the race is the annual settlement of accounts between them. What the visitor sees is therefore a genuine civic event that happens to be four hundred years old and to take place in one of the finest squares in Europe. In our reading, its place in the international calendar is unusual: it is enormously famous, entirely free to attend in its main form, and almost impossible to understand from outside. The centre of the Campo costs nothing and holds tens of thousands of people; the balconies around it are private property and cost a great deal. Both watch the same ninety seconds. Anyone going should read about the contrade first, arrive several days early for the trials and the street dinners, and accept that the race is the smallest part of the week.

02A semana ao seu redor

Each Palio is the end of four days of escalating activity, and those days are the reason to come. From the lottery that assigns the horses, six trial races are run in the Campo, morning and evening, each drawing a large crowd for free; the contrade parade through their own streets singing; and on the eve of the race every contrada lays long tables down the middle of its streets for the propitiatory dinner, several hundred people eating outdoors under the flags. Visitors can buy places at some of these dinners through the contrade themselves. On race day the city closes: the Campo fills from mid-afternoon and the entrances are shut once it is full, so anyone wanting a place in the centre must be inside by about four for a race run in the early evening. Siena is otherwise a compact walled hill town of 50,000 people, and in July and August it is hot and heavily visited; the Duomo, the Palazzo Pubblico and the Pinacoteca are all within ten minutes of the Campo and are best seen in the morning.

03Quando chegar

Arrive three or four days before the race, not the day of it. The trials, the horse lottery and the street dinners are where the week's real interest lies, they are free or cheap, and the town is at its most alive. On race day itself, be in the Campo by four in the afternoon if you intend to stand in the centre - the gates close when it is full and there is no re-entry, no shade and no way out for several hours. Stay the night of the race: the winning contrada's celebrations run through the streets until dawn and are the best thing that happens all week. Leave the following afternoon.

04Onde se hospedar

Inside the walls is the only sensible choice for the Palio, because the town gates and the roads around them are closed on race day and the walk uphill from outside is long. The streets around the Campo, and the Terzo di Citta and Terzo di San Martino quarters either side of it, put you within five minutes of everything; supply is small and taken far ahead for both Palio dates. The area around Porta Romana and the Fortezza is quieter and still walkable. Outside the walls, the country hotels and agriturismi of the Chianti and the Crete Senesi are twenty to forty minutes away and are the pleasanter option for a longer Tuscan stay, at the cost of the night of the race. Florence, ninety minutes north, is a poor base for the Palio itself.

05Acesso e hospitalidade

The centre of the Piazza del Campo is free and unticketed for the trials and for both races, and it is where the great majority of people watch. There is no reservation, no seat and no cover; you arrive early, you stand, and you cannot leave. Everything else is private. The balconies, windows and roof terraces of the palazzi around the square belong to their owners, who let them for the two race days at high prices through agencies and directly; the wooden bleachers built against the buildings are similarly sold by the owners of the frontage they stand on. There is no central box office and no official allocation - this is a private market in private property, and prices and quality vary enormously. The contrade themselves sell places at the eve-of-race dinners, which is the closest thing to accessible hospitality and is arranged directly with each contrada. No prices are quoted here because no organizer publishes any.

06Onde ocorre a actividade social

In the streets of the contrade, which is where a visitor should spend the week. Each ward has its own territory, its own bar or clubhouse, its own fountain and church, and during Palio week its streets are hung with flags, occupied by drummers and given over to the long communal dinners. The Campo itself is the public stage for the trials and the race and for the celebrations afterward. Around it, the cafes under the Palazzo Pubblico and along the Banchi di Sopra and Via di Citta take the ordinary trade. There are no private parties in the sense used elsewhere in this calendar: the contrada dinner is the social form here, it happens outdoors on a public street, and outsiders can generally buy a seat at one.

07Como chegar

Aviação comercialFlorence Peretola is 80 km north, about an hour and a quarter by road; Pisa is 130 km, an hour and three quarters; Rome Fiumicino is 230 km and about three hours. Florence is the practical arrival for most visitors.
ComboioSiena's station is below the town at the foot of the hill, connected by escalator and bus to the walls. Trains from Florence take about an hour and a half with a change at Empoli; the direct bus from Florence is faster at about an hour and a quarter and is what most people use. There is no high-speed line to Siena.
AutomóvelSiena is walled and its centre is a restricted traffic zone with automatic enforcement; drive to one of the perimeter car parks and walk or take the escalators up. On Palio days the approaches and gates are closed to traffic. A car is useful for the Tuscan countryside and a liability in the town.
Aviação privadaFlorence Peretola and Pisa handle business aviation, both between an hour and two hours by road. Siena has a small airfield at Ampugnano for light aircraft, about fifteen minutes from the town.

08Aspectos práticos

TrajeNone. This is an outdoor summer event in a stone square with no shade, and the only sensible clothing is light, covered and comfortable for standing for four or five hours - a hat and water matter more than anything else. Contrada members wear their fazzoletto, the ward's silk scarf, and it is worn seriously; a visitor should not buy and wear one casually. Balcony seats are more formal only in the sense that people dress for a summer evening.
ClimaEarly July in Siena typically brings daytime highs around 30 to 32C and overnight lows near 17C; mid-August is hotter, with highs often above 32C. Rain across either month is light, 20 to 40 mm, but afternoon thunderstorms occur and are the one thing that can postpone the race. The Campo holds heat well into the evening and there is no shade in the centre.
Deslocação e transporteSiena inside the walls is walkable and steep, and nothing else is needed. On race days the gates and the streets around the Campo close progressively from the afternoon and the town is effectively pedestrian. Buses to Florence run from the Piazza Gramsci; the escalators from the northern car parks and the station save a substantial climb. Taxis are few.
HotéisThe two hardest nights of the Sienese year. Rooms inside the walls for 1-2 July and 15-16 August are taken six months to a year ahead, and rates for those nights are several times the ordinary summer level. Many hotels impose minimum stays. Anyone booking late should look to the countryside within half an hour, or plan to come for the trials earlier in the week when the town is far easier.
RestaurantesRestaurants around the Campo are booked out on race days and the ones directly on the square are the town's most touristic. The better kitchens are in the side streets of the three terzi and in the contrade's own quarters, and they take reservations. On the eve of the race almost everyone eats at a contrada dinner in the street, which visitors can join by arrangement, and the restaurants that remain open are quiet. Tuscan food here is plain and good: pici, cinta senese pork, panforte.
Prazo para reservasHotel rooms inside the walls for either Palio should be secured six months to a year ahead. Balcony and bleacher places are sold by the building owners and agencies from the spring and should be arranged directly rather than through resellers where possible. Contrada dinner places are arranged in the weeks before, through the contrada. The free centre of the Campo requires no booking at all, only arriving early.
IngressosThere is no ticket for the Palio. The centre of the Piazza del Campo is free and open for the trials and both races, filled on a first-come basis and closed once full. Seating in the wooden bleachers and places at the windows, balconies and terraces around the square are private property, let by their owners and by agencies at market prices, with no central box office and no official allocation. Trial races through the four preceding days are watched from the same free centre and are far less crowded.
HospitalidadeThere is no official hospitality programme. The private balcony and terrace market is the commercial layer and is unregulated; the same window can be offered at very different prices by different intermediaries, and buyers should establish exactly which building and which floor they are getting. Places at the contrade's eve-of-race street dinners are the authentic alternative and are arranged directly with individual contrade, which publish their own contact details.

09Histórico

Races have been held in Siena since the medieval period, and the Palio in something like its present form - run in the Campo, contested by the contrade, on the two fixed dates - dates from the seventeenth century, with the July race established in 1656 in honour of the Madonna di Provenzano and the August race, for the Assumption, added in the following century. The number of contrade was fixed at seventeen in 1729 by a decree of the governor of Siena that also set their boundaries, and those boundaries still stand. The race has survived the fall of the Republic of Siena, unification, two world wars and modern animal-welfare pressure, which has produced real changes: veterinary screening of horses, mattressed barriers, a purpose-built training regime and a register of approved animals. Extraordinary Palios have been run a handful of times for exceptional occasions, most recently in the twenty-first century. The 2020 races were cancelled for the pandemic, the first cancellation in decades.

10Quem está presente

The Sienese first and overwhelmingly - contrada members of every age, who are the participants rather than the audience, and for whom this is the central event of the year; Italians from Tuscany and beyond; a large international tourist crowd in the centre of the Campo, particularly in August; the private letting market's clients on the balconies; and the racing and equestrian world, in smaller numbers. The gap between the local and visiting experience of this event is wider than at anything else in this calendar.
