Monaco's midsummer fundraising evening for the Monegasque Red Cross, held each July at the Sporting with a dinner, a headline show and a tombola.

The Red Cross Gala is the second of Monaco's two great charity evenings and the summer counterpart to the Rose Ball in March. It has been held since 1948 for the benefit of the Monegasque Red Cross, the principality's own national society, and it takes place at the Salle des Etoiles at the Sporting Monte-Carlo, the ballroom built out over the water on Avenue Princesse Grace whose roof slides open in summer.
The evening's shape is consistent: a reception, a seated dinner, a live show by an international headline act staged in the room, dancing, and a tombola whose prizes are donated by the gala's supporters and which is the principal fundraising mechanism of the night. The Sovereign Prince presides as president of the Monegasque Red Cross, and the society publishes what the evening raises and how it is applied - the Monegasque Red Cross runs local social and medical services in the principality as well as international humanitarian programmes.
The 2026 edition, the 77th, was held on 18 July and carried a preview of a new production created by the Sporting itself rather than a touring headliner, which reporting described as a change of format. That is worth noting because the show has historically been the gala's public face: the act booked for the Red Cross night has often been the summer's biggest name on this coast.
01Warum es relevant ist
Monaco's two galas bracket the Riviera season, and the Red Cross Gala is the one that sits at its height - the middle of July, when the coast is at capacity, the Mediterranean charter fleet is in, and the principality is at its fullest. Its significance is straightforwardly institutional: it is the annual fundraising event of a national Red Cross society whose president is the head of state, and the sums it raises fund identifiable programmes that the society reports on. In our reading, its interest to anyone following the calendar is as a marker rather than as an occasion, since it cannot be attended by a visitor. What is useful to know is the pairing: the Rose Ball in March opens Monaco's year and the Red Cross Gala closes its first half, and the Sporting is the room for both. The same hall, on almost every other night of the summer, hosts a public concert series that anyone can buy a ticket to.
02Die Woche darum
Mid-July is the peak of the Riviera year. Monaco is full, Port Hercule and Fontvieille are at capacity, the Larvotto beach clubs run at full stretch, and the roads along the Corniches are slow all day. The Sporting itself is at the centre of the summer: the Monte-Carlo Summer Festival runs concerts in the same Salle des Etoiles through July and August, open to public ticket sale, and the Jimmy'z club and the Sporting's restaurants operate every night. Along the coast, Saint-Tropez, Cannes, Antibes and the Italian border towns are all in their high season, and Nice is at its busiest. Nothing about the gala itself is visible from the street: guests arrive by car at a controlled entrance and the evening is entirely enclosed. The practical effect on a visitor is nil, beyond one Saturday night when the Salle des Etoiles is not selling concert tickets.
03Anreisezeitpunkt
The gala is closed, so this is a question about the Riviera rather than the event. Mid-July on this coast rewards a longer stay and a base outside the principality - four or five nights, with days on the water and evenings in Monte-Carlo. If you are attending, Friday to Monday is the shape; the Sunday after a July gala in Monaco is not a travelling day and the airport road at Nice is at its worst on summer weekends.
04Unterkunft
In the principality, the Carre d'Or around the Casino and the Larvotto strip along Avenue Princesse Grace are the two choices - the second puts you within walking distance of the Sporting. Both are at their annual peak in price and occupancy in July. The better summer answer is outside Monaco: Cap d'Ail, Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, Beaulieu-sur-Mer, Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat and Eze-sur-Mer are five to twenty minutes along the coast, have swimming and shade, and are connected by the coastal railway. Menton is twenty minutes east and markedly cheaper. Nice, forty minutes west, has the volume and the airport. Anyone determined to stay in Monaco in July should book by the winter.
05Zugang und Hospitality
The gala is a private, invitation and subscription evening. Tables and places are arranged through the Monegasque Red Cross; there is no public sale, and it is not something a visitor can buy into. The society publishes the date, the programme and the results of the evening, and its own site is the place to look for both. Corporate support takes the form of table subscription and donated tombola prizes rather than a purchasable hospitality package. No prices are stated in this record because none were verified. The publicly accessible version of the same venue is the Monte-Carlo Summer Festival, the concert series run in the Salle des Etoiles through July and August, for which Monte-Carlo Societe des Bains de Mer sells tickets in the ordinary way.
06Wo das gesellschaftliche Geschehen stattfindet
Nothing about the gala happens in public. Monaco's public summer life is on the Larvotto beach and its clubs, the terraces of the Casino square and the Cafe de Paris, the Buddha Bar and the hotel bars of the Carre d'Or, the restaurants along Quai Albert Ier at Port Hercule, and the Sporting complex itself on non-gala nights. The coastal path around Cap Martin and the Saturday market at La Condamine are the free pleasures. In July the centre of gravity of the whole coast shifts to the water, and the visible social activity is on the boats in the two harbours rather than on land.

09Geschichte
The Monegasque Red Cross was founded in 1948 and its gala dates from the same period, making it one of the oldest continuously held charity evenings on the Mediterranean. The society's presidency has been held by the reigning sovereign throughout, and the gala has functioned as a fixed point of the principality's summer for three quarters of a century. It was not held in 2020 or 2021 during the pandemic, which reconciles the 77th edition falling in 2026. For most of its history the evening's draw has been the headline performer, and the list of acts booked into the Salle des Etoiles for the Red Cross night is a reasonable index of postwar popular music. The 2026 edition's shift toward a Sporting-produced show rather than a touring headliner is the most recent change to that formula.
