The Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup is the season's championship week for large racing yachts. Entry is open to monohulls and multihulls of at least sixty feet, which in practice means a fleet running from sixty-footers up to boats over fifty metres; the provisional entry for the 2026 edition ran to close to forty yachts. The Yacht Club Costa Smeralda runs the regatta with the International Maxi Association, which is endorsed by World Sailing to award maxi world titles, and Rolex has been the title sponsor for decades.

Racing alternates between two quite different kinds of day. Coastal races take the fleet north into the La Maddalena archipelago, through the granite islands and the narrow passages of the Bonifacio strait, on courses that can run forty miles or more and that reward local knowledge as much as speed. Windward-leeward races for the Maxi 1 and Maxi Grand Prix classes are sailed on set courses off Porto Cervo, where the boats are close enough to the headlands to be watched from the shore. The 2026 edition carried two world championships, the Rolex IMA Maxi 1 World Championship and the Rolex IMA Maxi Grand Prix World Championship, and a multihull division of six boats that included the first trimaran ever entered.

Ashore, everything happens at the club. The Yacht Club Costa Smeralda's clubhouse sits above the marina at Porto Cervo, with the race office, the daily briefings, the results and the evening functions in the same building, and the fleet berthed directly below on the Molo Vecchio. The village of Porto Cervo — the Piazzetta, the arcaded shopping street, the handful of restaurants — is a five-minute walk. It is a compact and quite formal setting compared with Saint-Tropez or Cowes: this is a club regatta at a private-feeling resort, not a town festival.

01Warum es relevant ist

For the maxi fleet this is the week that decides the year. The world titles are awarded here, the newest boats are measured against each other for the first time in anger, and the owners who commission this kind of yacht are almost all present. No other maxi event concentrates the class in the same way, and the International Maxi Association builds its calendar around it.

In our reading, the Costa Smeralda setting does more work than people credit. The archipelago courses are genuinely difficult and genuinely beautiful, which is why designers and afterguards treat a result here as meaningful rather than promotional, and why the regatta has kept top-level entries through periods when other superyacht events drifted toward parade sailing. It also sits at exactly the right point in the calendar — after the August holiday, before the Cannes and Monaco shows — so the yachts can race here and be on the Riviera two weeks later.

02Die Woche darum

The Costa Smeralda in the first half of September is in its last active fortnight. August has emptied, the Italian holiday traffic has gone, and the resort runs at a manageable level with everything still open. The marina fills with the racing fleet and with the spectator and support boats that follow it, and the Molo Vecchio quay becomes the place everyone walks in the early evening to look at the boats.

The Rolex Swan Cup follows immediately in even years — 13 to 19 September in 2026 — so a certain number of boats, crews and sponsors simply stay on for a second week, and the resort's hotels and restaurants run continuously busy for a fortnight. Beyond Porto Cervo, the beaches at Liscia Ruja, Capriccioli and Romazzino are at their best in September, and the boat trips out to La Maddalena and Budelli operate through the month. Olbia, forty minutes south, is where the airport and the ordinary Sardinian economy are.

03Anreisezeitpunkt

Arrive Sunday if you are sailing, since registration and measurement are that day and the first race is Monday. For a visitor, the mid-week days are the ones to see — the coastal race to the archipelago is the most interesting to follow and the windward-leewards off Porto Cervo are the easiest to watch from land. Stay through Saturday for the final race and the prizegiving, and leave Sunday. Four nights, Wednesday to Sunday, is the efficient version.

04Unterkunft

Porto Cervo village and the immediate resort around it put you within walking distance of the club and the marina, and that is the only real reason to pay the premium. Cala di Volpe, Romazzino and Pitrizza are within a few minutes by car and are quieter. Baja Sardinia and Cannigione, on the other side of the headland, are noticeably cheaper, have a normal Sardinian holiday economy and are fifteen to twenty-five minutes away. Palau and Santa Teresa Gallura, at the top of the island, are further and cheaper again and have the ferry to La Maddalena. Olbia has hotel stock, an airport and none of the atmosphere; it is a practical base rather than a pleasant one. Hotels here are named only as landmarks and most of the resort's properties close in early October.

05Zugang und Hospitality

Racing entry is by registration with the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda under the published Notice of Race, open to monohulls and multihulls of sixty feet and over; boats must satisfy International Maxi Association measurement requirements for the class they enter. The clubhouse and its terraces are for members, competitors and guests, not for the public. There is no admission charge to Porto Cervo, the village or the marina quays, and no ticket is sold for spectating. The prizegiving is a competitors' function.

06Wo das gesellschaftliche Geschehen stattfindet

Public life during the regatta is the marina and the village. The Molo Vecchio quay, where the fleet lies, is walkable and is where the crews, the sailmakers and the photographers gather in the late afternoon; the Piazzetta and the arcaded walkways above it hold the cafés and the shops and take the early-evening crowd. The Yacht Club Costa Smeralda's building is the week's institutional centre and is not open to visitors, but the quay and the terrace steps below it are. In the evening the restaurants around the Piazzetta and along the marina are the obvious choices and need booking; the beach clubs at Liscia Ruja and Cala di Volpe run through September. For watching the racing, the headlands north of Porto Cervo and the road toward Capo Ferro give clear views of the windward-leeward course area, and the Capo Ferro lighthouse is the classic vantage point.

07Anreise

LinienluftfahrtOlbia Costa Smeralda (OLB) is about 30 kilometres and forty minutes away, with heavy summer schedules from across Europe that thin sharply after mid-September. Alghero (AHO) and Cagliari (CAG) are two and three hours by road respectively.
BahnSardinia's rail network does not reach the Costa Smeralda. The nearest useful station is Olbia, which connects to Cagliari and Sassari but not to the resort.
AutoA car is close to essential. The SP59 and SP94 connect Porto Cervo to the SS125 and on to Olbia. Distances are short but the roads are winding and slow. Parking in Porto Cervo village is in paid car parks and is tight during the regatta.
PrivatluftfahrtOlbia Costa Smeralda handles business aviation and is one of the busiest private-aviation airports in Italy in season, with slot and parking pressure in July and August that has largely eased by the regatta. Figari in southern Corsica is an alternative for smaller aircraft.
HubschrauberHelicopter transfers operate to the Costa Smeralda from Olbia and from the mainland; there are landing sites serving the resort and the larger hotels. Ship-to-shore helicopter operations are routine for the larger yachts.
MarinasMarina di Porto Cervo, run by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, is the harbour, with the Molo Vecchio quay taking the regatta fleet and berths for yachts up to well over a hundred metres. It is effectively full during the regatta and again during the Swan Cup. Marina dell'Orso at Poltu Quatu, Cala Bitta and Cannigione are the nearest alternatives; Porto Rotondo and Olbia's marinas take the overflow. Anchorages off Liscia Ruja, Cala di Volpe and in the La Maddalena archipelago are used constantly, subject to the national park's rules in the archipelago itself.

08Praktische Hinweise

KleidungDaytime is sailing kit and resort clothing. Porto Cervo in the evening is more dressed than Saint-Tropez and much more dressed than Cowes — collared shirts, dresses, a jacket for the club or the better restaurants, and no beachwear in the village after dark. Crews in team kit are the visible majority all week. Deck shoes with non-marking soles if you are going aboard.
WetterEarly September in northern Sardinia is hot and dry, with daytime temperatures typically in the high twenties Celsius and sea temperatures at their annual peak. The regatta's wind is the maestrale from the northwest, which can build hard through the afternoon and makes the archipelago courses demanding; light-air mornings are also common. Rain is unusual. No station normals were sourced for this record.
Vor Ort navigierenRent a car at Olbia airport and book it well ahead; taxis on the Costa Smeralda are few and expensive, and there is effectively no public transport between the resort's bays. Porto Cervo village is pedestrianized and easily walked once you are parked. Boat transfers between the marinas and to the archipelago are widely available and are often faster than the road.
HotelsThe Costa Smeralda's hotel stock is small, expensive and seasonal; most of it closes in early or mid-October. September rates are below the August peak but the regatta and the Swan Cup keep occupancy high through the first three weeks of the month. Book by spring for Porto Cervo itself; Baja Sardinia, Cannigione and Palau hold availability much later and cost a fraction as much.
RestaurantsPorto Cervo's restaurants are limited in number and fill every night during the regatta, so reserve. The beach restaurants at Liscia Ruja, Cala di Volpe and Romazzino serve lunch through September. Cannigione and Baja Sardinia have good, plainer places at ordinary prices. Almost everything shuts for the season within a few weeks of the regatta ending.
ReservierungszeitpunktHotels three to five months ahead for Porto Cervo in the regatta fortnight. Flights into Olbia early, since schedules thin after mid-September. Restaurants one to two weeks ahead. Marina berths at Porto Cervo are not obtainable during the regatta without a long-standing arrangement with the club.
TicketsThere is no ticket and no admission charge — the marina quays, the village and the coastline are all open. Racing entry is by registration with the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda under the Notice of Race, restricted to yachts of sixty feet and over meeting International Maxi Association requirements. Entry fees are set in the Notice of Race and are not quoted here.
HospitalityThe organizer sells no public hospitality. The clubhouse functions, daily briefings and prizegiving are for competitors, members and their guests. Rolex and the regatta's partners entertain privately during the week, as do owners aboard their boats; we describe none of it and name no function. The International Maxi Association publishes results, entry lists and daily reports openly on its own site, which is the best free way to follow the racing.

09Geschichte

The regatta belongs to the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, which was founded in 1967 by the Aga Khan alongside the development of the Costa Smeralda itself, and which has since become one of the most active organizing authorities in Mediterranean sailing. The club runs Porto Cervo's marina and sailing centre and hosts a dense season of regattas from late May through early October.

The organizer numbered the 2026 regatta the 36th edition. Maxi racing at Porto Cervo is considerably older than that count suggests, and the discrepancy indicates the series has not been held in every intervening year. Rolex's involvement made the event one of the earliest and most durable of the watchmaker's sailing partnerships, alongside the Rolex Swan Cup, which the same club stages the week afterward.

10Wer ist dort

Maxi yacht owners, most of whom race their own boats with professional afterguards; the professional grand-prix sailing community, including America's Cup and Olympic sailors hired for the week; designers, sailmakers, rig and hardware manufacturers; the International Maxi Association's membership and technical staff; Rolex and the regatta's other partners; specialist marine media and photographers; and the Costa Smeralda's September resort population, who watch from the quay and the headlands.
