Yacht Le A, designed by Philippe Starck, Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta

The Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta opens the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda's main sailing season, some three months ahead of the club's better-known Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup. Entry is open to superyachts of ninety feet and over, to the Wally class that has raced at Porto Cervo since the 1990s, to Southern Wind performance-cruisers, and to multihulls of fifty feet and up, which together make a fleet that mixes pure racing machines with yachts built primarily for cruising. Racing runs windward-leeward courses off the Costa Smeralda for the faster classes and longer coastal routes toward the La Maddalena archipelago for the rest, over four days of sport bookended by registration and prizegiving.

Ashore, the regatta is a club event rather than a public festival: the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda's clubhouse above the marina runs the race office, the daily skippers' briefings and the evening results, with the fleet berthed on the Molo Vecchio below. Porto Cervo's Piazzetta, a short walk up from the quay, holds the handful of restaurants and shops that see the week's spectators and crews.

01Por que importa

This is the yacht club's first proper test of the season's new tonnage — hulls launched or refitted over the winter get their first competitive outing here, in front of the same designers, sailmakers and brokers who will judge them again at the Maxi Cup and in Monaco in the autumn. It carries less weight than either of those two fixtures, and Porto Cervo itself is quieter in late May than in the first half of September, but for the Wally and superyacht racing fraternity specifically, this is where the year's form is first read.

02A semana ao seu redor

Late May on the Costa Smeralda is early season: the resort's hotels and restaurants are open but well short of their August capacity, and the regatta fleet and its shore teams are a noticeable but not overwhelming presence in Porto Cervo village. The Range Rover Sardinia Cup follows directly in the same waters, so crews, sailmakers and support boats commonly stay through both weeks. Beyond the marina, the beaches at Liscia Ruja and Capriccioli are open with none of the crowding of high summer, and boat trips to the La Maddalena archipelago are already running.

03Quando chegar

Arrive Tuesday for registration if you are sailing; the racing runs Wednesday to Friday with the final race and prizegiving on Saturday. For a visitor, Thursday and Friday give the clearest views of the windward-leeward fleet from the headlands north of the marina, and Saturday afternoon's prizegiving is the natural point to leave from.

04Onde se hospedar

Porto Cervo village puts visitors within walking distance of the club and the marina, at a premium that is nonetheless lower than during the September regattas. Cala di Volpe and Romazzino are a short drive and quieter; Baja Sardinia, Cannigione and Palau, all fifteen to thirty minutes away, are markedly cheaper and have a more ordinary Sardinian holiday atmosphere. Olbia, with the airport, is a practical rather than an appealing base. No hotel is named here as a recommendation.

05Acesso e hospitalidade

Entry to race is by registration with the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda under its published Notice of Race, open to the classes and minimum lengths described above. The clubhouse, its briefings and its prizegiving are for members, competitors and their guests. There is no admission charge to the marina, the village or the coastline, and no spectator ticket is sold because none is required.

06Onde ocorre a actividade social

Public life during the regatta is the Molo Vecchio quay, where the fleet berths and where crews and photographers gather at the end of racing, and the Piazzetta above it, whose cafés and arcaded shopping street take the early-evening crowd. The Yacht Club Costa Smeralda building itself is members' and competitors' territory, but the quay in front of it is open and is the best vantage point on the fleet at rest. The headlands toward Capo Ferro give the clearest free views of the offshore courses.

07Como chegar

Aviação comercialOlbia Costa Smeralda (OLB), about 30 kilometres and forty minutes away, carries the regular schedules; services are lighter in late May than in high summer. Alghero (AHO) and Cagliari (CAG) are two to three hours by road.
ComboioSardinia's rail network does not reach the Costa Smeralda; Olbia is the nearest station and connects only to Cagliari and Sassari.
AutomóvelA car is close to essential. The SP59 and SP94 link Porto Cervo to the SS125 and Olbia; the roads are short in distance but slow and winding.
Aviação privadaOlbia Costa Smeralda handles business aviation with far less pressure on slots and parking than in July and August.
HelicópteroHelicopter transfers run from Olbia and the mainland to landing sites serving the resort; demand is lighter than during the September regattas.
MarinasMarina di Porto Cervo, run by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, takes the regatta fleet on the Molo Vecchio and is close to capacity for the week. Poltu Quatu, Cala Bitta and Cannigione are the nearest alternatives; anchorages off Liscia Ruja and in the La Maddalena archipelago, subject to the national park's rules, are widely used.

08Aspectos práticos

TrajeDaytime is sailing kit and resort wear. Evenings in Porto Cervo run smart rather than casual even outside the September peak — collared shirts and dresses are the norm in the village after dark, with a jacket expected at the club. Deck shoes with non-marking soles for anyone going aboard.
ClimaLate May in northern Sardinia is warm and generally settled, with daytime temperatures typically in the low-to-mid twenties Celsius and the sea still cool from winter. Winds are more variable than in September, mixing sea breezes with the occasional maestrale from the northwest. No station normals were sourced for this record.
Deslocação e transporteRent a car at Olbia; taxis on the Costa Smeralda are scarce and there is no public transport between the resort's bays. Porto Cervo village itself is pedestrianized.
HotéisMay rates sit well below the August and September peaks and the resort's small hotel stock is easier to book than during the Maxi Cup or Swan Cup, though rooms in Porto Cervo itself still go early relative to the outlying bays.
RestaurantesPorto Cervo's limited restaurants are busy but bookable with a few days' notice in May, unlike the sell-outs of the September regattas. Cannigione and Baja Sardinia offer plainer, cheaper alternatives.
Prazo para reservasHotels one to three months ahead for Porto Cervo; restaurants a few days to a week ahead. Car rental should be arranged with the flight, since Olbia's stock is limited even in shoulder season.
IngressosThere is no ticket and no admission charge. Racing entry is by registration with the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda under the Notice of Race; entry fees are set there and are not quoted here.
HospitalidadeThe organizer sells no public hospitality. Briefings, results and the prizegiving are competitor and member functions; Loro Piana and the club's other partners entertain privately during the week, which we do not describe from the inside.

09Histórico

The regatta dates to 2008, run from its first edition by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, the club the Aga Khan founded in 1967 alongside the development of the Costa Smeralda resort itself. Loro Piana's title sponsorship has been continuous since the event's founding, distinguishing it from the Giraglia race along the coast in France, where Loro Piana took over the title only in 2024 after Rolex's long sponsorship ended. The regatta grew out of the same club culture that produces the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup and the Rolex Swan Cup, and shares its clubhouse, its marina and much of its organizing staff with both.

10Quem está presente

Superyacht and Wally-class owners, many racing their own boats; professional afterguard sailors and class technical committees; designers, sailmakers and refit yards showing early-season work; the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda's membership; and the resort's May population of early-season visitors who watch from the quay.
