The Gstaad Menuhin Festival runs longer than any other event in this calendar: seven weeks, from the middle of July to the first days of September, with more than fifty concerts spread across the Saanenland. The two defining spaces are the eighteenth-century church at Saanen, where Yehudi Menuhin played the first concerts in 1957 and which still carries the chamber and baroque programme, and the festival tent at Gstaad, a temporary structure large enough for symphonic forces. The Cine Theatre in Gstaad takes smaller events, and the organizers have a permanent Gstaad concert hall in planning.

The festival is not a single fortnight of intensity but a season, and it is programmed as one: a theme each year - P_A_SSI_O_N for 2027 - and a rhythm that lets a visitor take two or three concerts across a long weekend at any point in the run. Alongside it, the Menuhin Festival Academy runs master courses for young professionals and for amateur orchestral players, which is an unusual pairing and a deliberate one.

Because it stretches from mid-July to early September, it overlaps almost everything else in the Bernese Oberland's summer, including the polo tournament on the Saanen airfield in the third week of August. Visitors regularly combine the two without planning to.

01Pourquoi c'est important

It is one of the oldest summer music festivals in Switzerland and it exists because a tourist office asked a violinist to fill the empty months. Menuhin, who lived at Saanen, agreed, and the result is the model that Alpine resorts have followed since: a summer cultural programme that justifies a mountain village keeping its hotels open past the ski season. In our reading its significance now is as much civic as musical. Gstaad's winter identity is famous and its summer one is not, and the festival is the single largest reason the Saanenland has a July and August at all. The programme itself has held its standing - the artists who appear here appear at Lucerne and Salzburg in the same season - and the 2026 edition marked seventy years.

02La semaine environnante

There is no single festival week, which changes how the destination behaves. Instead the Saanenland runs a long, even summer: hiking and cycling on the Wispile, Eggli, Rellerli and Hornberg, the Saanen and Gstaad markets, the mountain restaurants, and a concert on most evenings somewhere between Rougemont and Gsteig. The village promenade is busy without being crowded, and the pace is slower than in any winter week. Two points in the calendar concentrate things: the third weekend of August, when the Hublot Polo Gold Cup takes over the Saanen airfield and the village fills; and the closing days at the start of September, when the festival's largest orchestral concerts are programmed. Almost everything about the Saanenland in summer is public - the trails, the villages, the churches between concerts, the MOB railway line down to Montreux - and the festival's own free and open events, including academy sessions, extend that.

03Quand arriver

Pick a long weekend rather than a week, and choose it by programme. Thursday to Sunday gives two or three concerts, a full day on the mountain and a market morning. Anyone attending the symphonic programme should look at the end of August and the first days of September, which carry the largest events and the best weather for the walk back to a hotel afterward.

04Où séjourner

Gstaad village, along the promenade, is the shortest walk to the festival tent and the Cine Theatre; the Gstaad Palace above the village and the Alpina on its shoulder are the landmarks. Saanen, five minutes down the valley, puts you beside the church that is the festival's oldest venue and is quieter and cheaper. Schonried, Saanenmoser and Gsteig are the mountain villages on the MOB line, all workable for evening concerts. Rougemont, across the language border in the Vaud, is ten minutes away and has its own church and its own character. Because the festival is spread across the valley, staying anywhere on the railway works.

05Accès et hospitalité

Tickets are sold by the festival through its own online shop and by telephone, concert by concert, with the tent's symphonic evenings and the best-known soloists closing first. The academy's master courses are open to participants by application and some sessions are open to listeners. There is no commercial hospitality tier and nothing invitation-only is published; the festival's supporter structures fund the academy rather than provide entertaining.

06Où se déroule l'activité sociale

The Gstaad promenade and its terraces before and after concerts, the Gstaad Palace bar and Grand Hall, the restaurants at Saanen, and the interval crowd outside the church and the tent, which in fine weather stands on the grass. During the day, the mountain restaurants above Wispile and Eggli and the lake at Lauenen. The festival's audience overlaps heavily with the Saanenland's summer chalet community, and the two are indistinguishable on a terrace.

07Comment s'y rendre

Aviation commercialeGeneva is about two and a quarter hours by road; Bern-Belp around an hour and a quarter; Zurich three hours. Geneva is the usual arrival.
RailThe Montreux Oberland Bernois line climbs from Montreux through Rougemont to Gstaad and Saanen, and the GoldenPass route connects from Interlaken via Zweisimmen. Both stations are walking distance from festival venues, and the MOB is how most audiences move between concerts in different villages.
VoitureFrom Geneva via Aigle and the Col des Mosses, or from Bern via Spiez and Zweisimmen. Roads are straightforward in summer. Gstaad's centre is traffic-calmed with underground parking.
Aviation privéeGstaad Airport at Saanen handles business aviation for the region, with Bern-Belp and Sion as alternatives and Geneva for larger aircraft. Note that the airfield is occupied by the polo tournament in the third week of August.
HélicoptèreHelicopter transfer from Geneva and Bern into Saanen is established and common in the summer season.

08Informations pratiques

Tenue vestimentaireSmart but unfussy. A jacket for men at the tent's evening concerts is normal and a tie is not; women wear day or cocktail dress depending on the concert. The church at Saanen and the daytime programme are informal, and audiences arrive from the mountain. Take a layer for the walk home - the valley cools quickly after dark even in August.
MétéoJuly to early September in the Saanenland gives daytime highs around 21 to 24C and overnight lows near 9 to 12C, with clear mornings and a genuine chance of afternoon thunderstorms over the peaks. August is among the wetter months in the Bernese Oberland. Concerts are indoors or under canvas and unaffected.
Se déplacerThe MOB railway and the local Postbus network connect every venue in the valley, and most hotels issue a guest card covering them. Evening services run late enough for concerts in the main villages. A car is not needed.
HôtelsThe Saanenland's summer is busy but not saturated, and the festival's length spreads demand across seven weeks rather than concentrating it. Two months' notice is usually enough outside the polo weekend in the third week of August, which is the valley's tightest. The Palace and the Alpina book earlier.
RestaurantsGstaad and Saanen restaurants fill before concerts and empty afterward; book early or plan to eat late. Mountain restaurants above the village need reservations at weekends. The Saanenland's dairies and the local Berner cooking are better found in the valley villages than on the promenade.
Délais de réservationThe season's programme is published in the spring and the tent's symphonic concerts and star recitals sell first. Book concerts before rooms, and treat the third weekend of August as a separate problem because of the polo.
BilletsSold by the festival through shop.menuhin.ch and by telephone on +41 33 748 81 82, concert by concert. No pass structure is published. Prices are published with each season's programme and are not reproduced here.
HospitalitéNo commercial hospitality programme is published. The Menuhin Festival Academy runs master courses for young professionals and for amateur orchestral musicians, which is the festival's principal non-concert activity, and the festival awards the Olivier Berggruen Prize annually.

09Historique

Yehudi Menuhin had a house in the Saanenland and was asked by local tourism officials to add some concerts to the summer season. The first festival was held in 1957 in the church at Saanen, and Menuhin directed it for decades. It grew from a handful of chamber concerts into a seven-week programme with a symphonic strand, adding the festival tent to hold audiences the church could not, and an academy to give the festival a teaching function. The festival awards the Olivier Berggruen Prize annually. Its roster over the years has included many of the era's leading soloists, and its identity has stayed closer to Menuhin's original chamber-music conception than the size of the modern programme would suggest.

10Qui s'y trouve

Swiss and German classical audiences, many of them long-standing subscribers; the Saanenland's summer residents and chalet owners; academy participants and their teachers and families; international visitors who follow the summer festival circuit between Verbier, Gstaad, Lucerne and Salzburg; and day visitors from the Vaud and the Bernese Oberland.
