The Future Investment Initiative is the annual conference of the FII Institute, a non-profit foundation set up in 2017 and funded by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund. It runs four days each October at the King Abdulaziz International Conference Center in Riyadh, under royal patronage, organised around declared pillars — for the tenth edition in 2026, capital, technology, society and leadership, under the theme The Power of Legacy.

The format is a large plenary conference with parallel stages, closed sessions and a heavy programme of bilateral meetings. Content follows the Saudi Vision 2030 agenda: infrastructure and giga-projects, artificial intelligence and compute, energy transition, sport, healthcare, mining and tourism. What distinguishes it is the concentration of allocators on one side of the table.

01Why it matters

In under a decade FII has become the fixed October date for anyone raising capital from the Gulf, and the announcements made from its stage carry real market weight. It matters as a calendar event because it inverts the usual geography of finance: the money is at home and the managers travel.

02The week around it

Riyadh is a city of some seven million and the conference is not visible outside its own district, but the last week of October has become a cluster: ministries, the Public Investment Fund and its portfolio companies time announcements to it, and satellite summits and cultural programming are scheduled in the same days.

03When to arrive

Arrive the Sunday before; the Saudi working week runs Sunday to Thursday, so Monday is a full business day and Sunday evening is already active.

04Where to stay

The Diplomatic Quarter, west of the centre, is closest to the conference centre and the most self-contained. The Olaya and King Fahd Road corridor holds most of the international hotel stock and the financial district's offices. The King Abdullah Financial District to the north is newer and quieter.

05Access and hospitality

FII is not a public conference. Attendance runs through the Institute's membership and partnership programme and through invitation and reviewed registration; no public delegate tariff is published and none is quoted here.

06Where the social activity happens

Almost all of the week's social activity is inside the conference centre and the adjoining hotels, as dinners and receptions hosted by ministries, funds and partner companies on their own lists.

07Getting there

Commercial aviationKing Khalid International is about 35 km north of the centre, roughly 40 minutes by road, with wide long-haul connectivity.
RailThe Riyadh Metro links the airport, the financial district and Olaya.
CarRiyadh is built for driving and ride-hail is ubiquitous.
Private aviationKing Khalid International has a dedicated royal and business-aviation terminal, and business traffic into Riyadh peaks sharply in the FII week.

08Practicalities

DressFormal business dress; suits and ties are standard and the register is conservative.
WeatherLate October in Riyadh is the start of the pleasant season: hot but no longer extreme, with afternoon highs commonly in the low thirties Celsius, cool evenings and effectively no rain.
Getting aroundEverything is done by car. Allow generous time for security screening and controlled approaches to the conference centre.
HotelsRiyadh's international hotel stock is smaller than the city's size suggests and the FII week absorbs it, with the Diplomatic Quarter and Olaya filling first.
RestaurantsThe Hittin, Olaya and Diriyah districts carry most business dining and are heavily booked during the conference week.
Reservation timingHotels two to three months ahead; restaurants a few weeks. Electronic visas should be arranged well before travel.
TicketsThere is no public ticket. Attendance is through FII Institute membership and partnership, invitation, or registration reviewed by the organiser. Main-stage sessions are livestreamed free and archived.
HospitalityThe Institute runs institutional partnership tiers rather than a purchasable hospitality product.

09History

The first edition was held in October 2017, where the Neom project was unveiled and commentators attached the nickname Davos in the Desert, a label the World Economic Forum has objected to.

10Who is there

Sovereign wealth fund and government investment principals; chief executives of international asset managers, banks and private-equity firms; Saudi ministers and heads of state-owned enterprises; heads of state and government; technology and energy leaders; and accredited international financial press.
