Date PrevistoNot yet announced. Every edition since 2022 has run Wednesday to Saturday in the first week of September at COEX, alongside Kiaf SEOUL (2025: 3-6 September; 2026: 2-5 September). On that pattern 2027 falls on 1-4 September. The fair's continuation depends on its partnership arrangement with Kiaf, which should be verified before this date is published.

OrganizzatoreFrieze, with Kiaf SEOUL (Galleries Association of Korea) · dal 2022

Frieze Seoul occupies two halls on the third level of COEX, the convention complex beneath a shopping centre in Gangnam, and shares the building with Kiaf SEOUL, the Korean galleries' own fair, which runs across the same days. A single arrangement admits visitors to both, which makes this the only major fair week where the international and the domestic fair are stacked on top of each other. The fifth edition, in September 2026, brought more than 125 galleries from 30 countries, over seventy per cent of them based in the Asia-Pacific and more than fifty holding permanent Seoul spaces. Alongside the main section and Focus Asia, reserved for younger galleries, 2026 introduced Material Practice, on the boundary between art and design, and Spotlight, for twentieth-century artists whose work has not travelled widely.

01Perché è rilevante

Seoul's arrival as an art market centre was quick and largely structural: favourable customs and tax treatment of imported art, a deep domestic collector base built in the 2010s, and a run of international gallery openings in Hannam-dong and Cheongdam-dong from 2021 onward. Frieze put a date on it.

Our reading is that Frieze Seoul is now the most important fair in Asia after Hong Kong, and the gap has narrowed rather than widened. It has not displaced Hong Kong, which retains the auction houses and the free-port logistics, but it has established that the region can support two serious weeks: March in Hong Kong, September in Seoul.

02La settimana intorno all'evento

Seoul Art Week runs across three gallery districts and is organized around evening openings. Samcheong-dong, in the old city beside Gyeongbokgung Palace, holds the longest-established galleries and the most walkable cluster; Hannam-dong, on the slope below Namsan, has the Leeum Museum of Art and the newest international spaces; Cheongdam, near the fair, holds the rest. Each district runs a designated late-opening night, which is the most useful thing to plan around. The National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, the Seoul Museum of Art and the Amorepacific Museum of Art all program to the week.

03Quando arrivare

Tuesday for a Wednesday preview, allowing a day for the flight and the time difference. On a public ticket, Thursday afternoon or Friday is best. Give the fair one day and the city two: one for Samcheong-dong and the palace district on foot, one for Hannam-dong and Leeum. Saturday is the busiest public day at COEX and most international visitors leave on Sunday.

04Dove alloggiare

Gangnam puts COEX within walking distance and is the efficient choice, with the greatest concentration of business hotels. Itaewon and Hannam-dong are the better base for anyone whose week is about galleries and museums, close to Leeum and about twenty-five minutes from the fair by subway. Jongno and Bukchon, in the old city near Gyeongbokgung, are the most pleasant to walk and closest to Samcheong-dong and the MMCA.

05Accesso e ospitalità

Frieze runs an invitation-only preview on the Wednesday, with the fair open to the public from 3pm on the Thursday and through Saturday. The organizer publishes prices annually and they are not reproduced here. Entry arrangements are shared with Kiaf SEOUL, so a Frieze ticket also gives access to the Korean fair in the same building; check the current year's terms, which the two organizers publish jointly. The gallery late-opening nights in Samcheong-dong, Hannam-dong and Cheongdam are free and open to anyone.

06Dove si svolge l'attività sociale

COEX is a mall, so the fair's immediate social life is functional and the Starfield Library atrium is the default meeting point. The evening moves out of Gangnam: to Hannam-dong's restaurants and small bars below the Leeum, to Itaewon a few minutes west, and to the alleys of Seongsu-dong across the river. Samcheong-dong and Bukchon are quieter and better in daylight. Public transport runs late and the city is safe to walk at night.

07Come arrivare

Aviazione commercialeIncheon International (ICN) is about an hour from Gangnam by road or by the AREX train with a transfer. Gimpo (GMP), much closer to the city, handles domestic flights and short-haul services from Tokyo, Osaka, Beijing, Shanghai and Taipei.
TrenoKTX high-speed services run from Seoul Station to Busan in under three hours and to most Korean cities. Within Seoul, the subway is fast, cheap and signposted in English; Samseong station on Line 2 and Bongeunsa on Line 9 both serve COEX directly.
AutoTaxis are plentiful and inexpensive, though the Gangnam grid congests at rush hour and the Han River bridges back up. A hire car is of no use in the city.
Aviazione privataGimpo International handles business aviation for Seoul and is the closest option to the city; Incheon also accepts private movements. Slots are administered tightly and arranged in advance.
ElicotteroThere is no routine civil helicopter transfer service for visitors; Korean airspace around Seoul is restricted.
MarineAra Marina and Gyeongin Ara Waterway west of the city and the marinas at Incheon serve small craft; Seoul itself has no seagoing yacht berthing.

08Aspetti pratici

AbbigliamentoSeoul is a well-dressed city and the art week reflects it, more so than London or Los Angeles. Tailoring or considered casual, and good shoes: the gallery districts involve real walking and Hannam-dong is on a hill. Early September is warm and humid, so light fabrics matter.
MeteoEarly September in Seoul is warm and humid at the end of the summer monsoon, with daytime highs typically in the high twenties Celsius and nights in the low twenties. Typhoon remnants can bring heavy rain in the first half of the month. Description is qualitative; no station normals were sourced.
Come spostarsiThe subway is the fastest way across the city and runs until around midnight; a T-money card is worth buying on arrival. Taxis are cheap but the Han River crossings are slow at peak hours. COEX is directly connected to Samseong and Bongeunsa stations and to an underground mall, so the last part of the journey is indoors.
HotelRates in Gangnam and Itaewon rise for the week but Seoul's hotel stock is deep and rooms remain available relatively late. Hotels near COEX fill first because of the walking distance.
RistorantiReservations in Hannam-dong, Cheongdam and Seongsu tighten during the week, and galleries take private rooms for their opening nights. Seoul's density of good, walk-in eating means this rarely constrains a visitor. Two weeks ahead covers most bookings.
Tempistiche di prenotazioneHotels three to four weeks ahead is usually sufficient. Restaurants one to two weeks. Fair tickets are sold online in advance; Saturday is the busiest public day.
BigliettiPublic admission runs from Thursday afternoon through Saturday, with tickets sold on frieze.com. The organizer publishes prices in Korean won each year and they are not stated here. Frieze and Kiaf SEOUL publish joint entry arrangements between the two fairs; check the current terms. Museum admission and the gallery late-opening nights are separate and mostly free.
OspitalitàThe Wednesday preview is by invitation from Frieze and from exhibiting galleries, with Frieze membership as the published alternative. On-site hospitality is partner-run and invitation-based. The largest part of the week's hospitality is generated by the luxury and fashion houses and by the galleries in Hannam-dong and Cheongdam rather than by the fair, and is not publicly bookable; the district late-opening nights are the open equivalent.

09Storia

Frieze announced its Seoul edition in 2021 in partnership with the Galleries Association of Korea, whose own Kiaf fair had run since 2002, and opened in September 2022 at COEX. The timing followed several years in which Seoul had become the fastest-growing gallery city in Asia, with international dealers opening spaces in Hannam-dong near the Leeum Museum of Art and in Cheongdam. Its distinguishing feature has always been the co-location with Kiaf rather than any change in format.

10Chi è presente

Korean collectors in the greatest numbers, joined by Japanese, Taiwanese, Chinese and Southeast Asian buyers, and by European and American galleries and museum staff following the region's second major week. The luxury and fashion houses are conspicuously present, since Seoul is one of their most important retail markets. Public days draw a large, young Korean audience for whom the fair is a mainstream cultural event.
