Daten · 80th British Academy Film Awards BestätigtSunday 21 February 2027, published by BAFTA in its press release opening entries for the 2027 EE BAFTA Film Awards and carried in Screen International's report on the 2027 rule changes, which lists the voting calendar as longlists on 7 January 2027, nominations on 19 January 2027 and the ceremony on 21 February. BAFTA's own press pages return HTTP 403 to automated fetching, so the organizer's wording was read through a search index and the date verified against the Screen International article, which was fetched directly. The 2027 round also expands the Outstanding British Film longlist from fifteen to twenty titles, gives the casting chapter a vote in the performance categories, renames the family film category, and requires disclosure of generative-AI use.

Southbank Centre, BAFTA Film Awards Walk through fountains at the reopening of the Royal Festival Hall, Thames Embankment, London, BAFTA Film Awards Royal Festival Hall, Thames embankment, London, United Kingdom, BAFTA Film Awards Southbank Centre - London, BAFTA Film Awards

BAFTA is a charity and a professional membership body, and the Film Awards are the most visible thing it does. Its members vote in two rounds: longlists published in early January, nominations about a fortnight later, and the winners decided before a ceremony held on a Sunday evening in the second half of February. Several categories are decided by juries or by specialist chapters rather than the whole membership — the casting chapter gains a vote in the performance categories from the 2027 round — and one, the EE Rising Star Award, is decided by a public vote, the only category at any of the major film awards where anyone can take part.

Since 2023 the ceremony has been held in the Royal Festival Hall under a multi-year agreement with the Southbank Centre, which changed the event's character more than the organizers probably intended. The Royal Opera House and the Royal Albert Hall, its two previous homes, are formal buildings set back from the street. The Festival Hall sits in the middle of a public riverside that tens of thousands of Londoners walk every weekend, so the arrivals take place with the Thames and the Hungerford Bridge behind them and an ordinary Sunday crowd on the other side of the barriers. BBC One carries the ceremony in the United Kingdom; a version is pre-recorded for E! in the United States.

For a visitor this is the easiest of the three major awards nights to see something of, and still not an event you can attend. The hall is closed to the public for the evening and there is no ticket. But the South Bank around it is public ground, the arrivals are visible from the riverside walk and Waterloo Bridge, and the rest of the complex — the Hayward Gallery, the National Theatre, the BFI Southbank a few hundred metres east — carries on with its own programme that weekend.

01Warum es relevant ist

Its position in the season is deliberate and its influence is real. Held three weeks before the Oscars and after the Academy's nominations are known, BAFTA is the last large verdict before final Oscar voting opens, and the overlap between the two memberships means its results are read as a partial forecast rather than an independent opinion. It is also the only one of the three that reliably rewards British work on its own terms, through Outstanding British Film, Outstanding Debut and Best British Newcomer, which makes it the single most consequential night of the year for the United Kingdom's own film industry.

In our reading BAFTA's real distinction is institutional rather than ceremonial. It is a membership charity with a year-round programme of screenings, craft events and funded schemes, and the awards are the fundraising and attention-gathering end of that work rather than the point of it. That is why the ceremony feels less like a broadcast built for an audience and more like a trade body's annual dinner that happens to be televised — and why the South Bank, a public arts complex rather than a rented theatre, suits it.

02Die Woche darum

The South Bank closes in stages. The Royal Festival Hall's front and its riverside terraces are fenced for the build in the days beforehand, the Southbank Centre reroutes pedestrian traffic along the embankment, and on the Sunday the stretch between the Hungerford footbridges and Waterloo Bridge carries crowds, barriers and broadcast trucks. Waterloo station and the Jubilee line are unaffected and remain the way in.

There is no public festival around the ceremony. February is London's quietest month for visitors and the awards are a single evening inside it; the film activity that weekend is in the cinemas, where the nominated titles are all still playing, and at BFI Southbank, which sits on the same riverside five minutes' walk east. Reporting describes an after-party and a set of studio and distributor receptions across the West End and Mayfair that night; none of it is open to visitors.

03Anreisezeitpunkt

Come for London in February and let the ceremony be a Sunday evening inside it. Arriving Friday and leaving Monday or Tuesday gives two clear days; the Sunday itself is worth spending on the South Bank, where the build and the arrivals are the free part of the event. Anyone with business in the British film industry should plan the preceding week, when the screening and reception calendar is dense.

04Unterkunft

The South Bank and Waterloo put you within walking distance and are the practical choice for that evening, though the area is thin on hotels and thinner on good restaurants. Across the river, the Strand, Covent Garden and Aldwych are five to fifteen minutes on foot over Waterloo Bridge and have the density the South Bank lacks. Mayfair and St James's are the formal choice, twenty minutes away by cab, and are where much of the industry stays. Bloomsbury and Clerkenwell are cheaper, quieter and well connected. February is low season across all of them.

05Zugang und Hospitality

The ceremony is invitation-only and BAFTA sells no public ticket to it. Seats in the Royal Festival Hall are allocated by BAFTA to nominees and their guests, to members, and to the studios, distributors and sponsors involved, and the after-party is on the same basis. The one route in for the public is the EE Rising Star Award, which anyone can vote in online during the nominations period. BAFTA's headquarters at 195 Piccadilly runs a year-round programme of screenings and events; membership of BAFTA is professional rather than purchasable by the public, and the Southbank Centre's own programme resumes at the hall within days.

06Wo das gesellschaftliche Geschehen stattfindet

The public part is a riverside. The Queen's Walk in front of the Royal Festival Hall, the Hungerford footbridges and the southern end of Waterloo Bridge are where people watch the arrivals, and the Southbank Centre's own bars and the food stalls under the hall operate through the afternoon. Eastward along the same walk are BFI Southbank, the National Theatre and the Oxo Tower; westward are the London Eye and County Hall. The industry's own geography that week is across the river: the hotel bars and private members' clubs of Soho, Mayfair and St James's, the screening rooms in Soho, and the restaurants around Covent Garden and Charlotte Street.

07Anreise

LinienluftfahrtHeathrow (LHR) is 40 to 60 minutes from the South Bank by Elizabeth line and Underground; Gatwick (LGW) runs direct trains to Victoria and to London Bridge in about 30 to 45 minutes; London City (LCY) is the closest and quickest for short-haul; Stansted (STN) and Luton (LTN) carry low-cost traffic with longer transfers.
BahnWaterloo is a five-minute walk from the Royal Festival Hall and is the relevant station for the ceremony; Charing Cross is the same distance across the Golden Jubilee footbridge. Eurostar services from Paris, Brussels and Amsterdam arrive at St Pancras International, fifteen minutes away on the Northern line.
AutoDriving to the South Bank is possible but unrewarding: the Congestion Charge and the Ultra Low Emission Zone both apply, parking around the Southbank Centre is limited to a handful of paid garages, and the embankment roads are closed or restricted around the ceremony.
PrivatluftfahrtFarnborough, Luton, Biggin Hill and London City handle the great majority of business-aviation traffic into London, with road transfers of 30 to 70 minutes depending on the field and the hour.
HubschrauberThe London Heliport at Battersea is the city's only licensed commercial heliport, about fifteen minutes from the South Bank by road; there is no landing site on the Southbank Centre site.
MarinasSt Katharine Docks beside Tower Bridge is central London's visiting marina, about twenty-five minutes east by road or river bus; the Thames is tidal here and access is through a lock on a published schedule.

08Praktische Hinweise

KleidungBlack tie and long gowns inside the hall, and a serious coat over them — the arrivals are outdoors on an exposed riverside in February and the wind off the Thames is the defining physical fact of the evening. Everywhere else in London that week, a jacket and good shoes cover anything a visitor will want to do.
WetterLate February in London is cold, grey and often wet: daytime highs commonly around 8 to 10 degrees Celsius, nights near freezing, short days and a high chance of rain or sleet on any given evening. The open riverside in front of the hall is several degrees colder than the surrounding streets. No station normals were sourced for this record, so the summary is qualitative.
Vor Ort navigierenWaterloo, Embankment and Charing Cross are all within ten minutes on foot and the Underground is far more reliable than road transport around the ceremony, when the embankment is restricted. Thames Clippers river buses stop at Festival Pier directly in front of the hall and are the pleasantest approach when they are running. Cabs cannot get close on the Sunday evening.
HotelsFebruary is London's softest month and the awards do not change that: rooms across the centre are generally available at short notice and at the year's lower rates, including on ceremony weekend. The exception is the small cluster of hotels immediately around Waterloo and the Strand, which fill with production and talent bookings held well ahead.
RestaurantsCovent Garden, Soho and Mayfair tighten on the Saturday and Sunday of the awards and several restaurants and hotel dining rooms take private bookings on the night, so published hours for that evening should not be assumed. The South Bank's own restaurants are limited in number and book out early for the weekend; eating across the river is usually better and no slower.
ReservierungszeitpunktHotels for February can generally be booked a few weeks ahead. Restaurant tables in Covent Garden and Soho for the awards weekend are worth two to three weeks' notice. Voting in the EE Rising Star Award closes before the nominations are announced, so anyone wanting to take part needs to watch the January dates.
TicketsBAFTA does not sell tickets to the Film Awards. Admission is by invitation through BAFTA, the nominated productions and the sponsors, and seats are not transferable. The only public participation is the free online vote for the EE Rising Star Award during the nominations period. The BBC One broadcast is the general access to the ceremony, and BAFTA publishes the awards calendar and voting rules on bafta.org.
HospitalityNo purchasable hospitality programme exists. The after-party and the sponsor lounges run on BAFTA's and the sponsors' own lists. BAFTA's year-round screening and event programme at 195 Piccadilly is the organization's public-facing activity, separate from the awards night, and anything marketed as a purchasable BAFTA ceremony seat or after-party entry should be treated as fraudulent.

09Geschichte

The British Film Academy gave its first awards in 1947 and held the ceremony at the Odeon Leicester Square; the BBC began broadcasting it in 1956. For most of its history it fell in April or May, and it moved to February in 2001 specifically to sit ahead of the Academy Awards and inside the same campaign season — a repositioning that transformed its significance and its attendance.

The venue history maps the change. Leicester Square until 2007, the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden from 2008 to 2016, the Royal Albert Hall from 2017 to 2022, and the Royal Festival Hall since 2023. EE has been the title sponsor since 2013, and its Rising Star Award, decided by public vote, dates from the same commercial era. The 2027 round brings the most substantial rule changes in several years, including a requirement that entrants disclose the use of generative AI and the extent of human authorship.

10Wer ist dort

Nominees and their agents and publicists; BAFTA's own membership across the craft chapters, which fills much of the hall; British and American distributors, financiers and streaming executives in London for the awards run; broadcast presenters and performers; sponsors and the jewelry and fashion houses dressing the arrivals; and an accredited press and photography corps on the riverside and backstage.
