Tennis Australia runs the Australian Open at Melbourne Park, a purpose-built precinct on the east bank of the Yarra a fifteen-minute walk from the centre of the city and next door to the Melbourne Cricket Ground. It has been there since 1988, when the tournament left the grass of Kooyong and changed surface with the move; the courts are cushioned acrylic and play faster in the heat than in the evening.

Melbourne Park was the first Grand Slam site to roof three courts, which is why the tournament almost never loses a day. Rod Laver Arena seats 14,820, John Cain Arena 10,300 and Margaret Court Arena 7,500, all roofed; Kia Arena, opened in 2022, adds 5,000. That capacity, plus a precinct designed to hold people who are not watching a match, is why the Australian Open outdraws every other major: Tennis Australia reported more than 1.36 million admissions in 2026.

The event has deliberately become a three-week festival rather than a fortnight. An opening week carries qualifying, practice and support events at low or no cost, then the main draw runs fifteen days from a Sunday. Between the arenas the precinct holds a live music stage, a long run of bars and food concessions, and enough shade to make a hot afternoon survivable.

01Pourquoi c'est important

The Australian Open opens the tennis year, which gives it the season's first real evidence and a disproportionate share of the sport's attention in January. Its more interesting claim is commercial: it is the major that solved the problem of the non-fan. In our reading it is the least formal and most easily enjoyed of the four majors, and the one where a visitor with no ticket to a show court still has a full day.

02La semaine environnante

Melbourne in January is already at its loudest and the tournament sits on top of it. The city's summer runs through the cricket at the MCG next door, a dense music and comedy calendar, and the beach weekends down the Mornington Peninsula, and the Australian Open's crowd flows through all of it.

Corporate Melbourne treats the fortnight the way London treats Wimbledon, and the sponsor entertaining is concentrated in the arenas' suites and in a run of hotel takeovers in Southbank and the CBD.

03Quand arriver

Come for the first week: the outside courts run full programmes, ground passes are cheap, and the draw has not yet narrowed. The Monday to Wednesday of week one is the best of it.

04Où séjourner

The CBD is the obvious base and the right one for a short visit: from the Collins Street end it is a fifteen-minute walk across the river or three tram stops. Southbank puts you closest to the precinct and is where most of the tournament's corporate housing sits, at the cost of a slightly airless neighborhood.

05Accès et hospitalité

Tennis Australia sells the tournament in two layers. A Ground Pass, sold by day, admits the holder to the precinct and the outside courts; it is inexpensive by the standards of Grand Slam tennis and it is what most of that 1.36 million bought. The roofed arenas are sold as separate day and night sessions, seat by seat, with Rod Laver Arena the most expensive and the first to sell through. Sales run through the tournament's ticketing partner with a registered-fan presale ahead of the general on-sale, usually from the preceding spring, and Tennis Australia operates an official resale facility for returned tickets. Opening-week access, including qualifying, is sold at a low fixed price or given away, which is the cheapest serious tennis of the year anywhere.

06Où se déroule l'activité sociale

Inside the precinct, the public social life is Grand Slam Oval and Garden Square, the live music stage, and the bars strung between the arenas, all open to any ground-pass holder; the suites and hospitality rooms are not.

07Comment s'y rendre

Aviation commercialeMelbourne Airport at Tullamarine is around thirty to forty-five minutes by road from the CBD and handles all long-haul arrivals; Avalon takes limited domestic and low-cost traffic and is considerably further out.
RailRichmond and Jolimont stations on the suburban network are both a short walk from the gates, and Flinders Street station is fifteen minutes on foot across the river.
VoitureThere is paid parking in the precinct but it is limited and sells out; Olympic Boulevard and the surrounding roads are subject to event closures.
Aviation privéeEssendon Fields is the closest business-aviation field to the city, about twenty minutes to the precinct; Melbourne Airport and Moorabbin handle the rest.
HélicoptèreThere is no landing at Melbourne Park.

08Informations pratiques

Tenue vestimentaireThe most casual of the majors and appropriately so; the crowd is in shorts, dresses and hats, and the sun is the thing to dress for rather than the occasion.
MétéoJanuary in Melbourne typically brings daily highs in the mid to high twenties Celsius, around 78 to 84F, but the city's summer is volatile and heat above 40C, or 104F, occurs most years.
Se déplacerWalk. The route from Federation Square across the Birrarung Marr footbridges takes about fifteen minutes and is faster than any vehicle at session changeover.
HôtelsMelbourne has deep hotel stock and the tournament does not empty it, but the second week and the Australia Day holiday tighten availability and lift rates across the CBD and Southbank.
RestaurantsMelbourne's dining is the best reason to spend extra nights here and the city absorbs the crowd well.
Délais de réservationArena session tickets go on presale from the preceding spring and Rod Laver Arena finals sessions sell through first. Hospitality is contracted from mid-year.
BilletsGround Passes are sold by day and cover the precinct and outside courts at a low price. Rod Laver Arena, Margaret Court Arena, John Cain Arena and Kia Arena are ticketed as separate day and night sessions. Opening-week and qualifying access is sold cheaply or free.
HospitalitéTennis Australia sells tiered official hospitality directly, pairing reserved arena seats with dining rooms, terraces and suites in the precinct, and licenses official travel partners overseas to sell packages including accommodation and transfers.

09Historique

The championship was first played in November 1905 at the Warehouseman's Cricket Ground in Melbourne, as the Australasian Championships, and for decades it moved between Australian and New Zealand cities and shifted around the calendar, which is why its early history is patchier than the other majors'. Distance kept the fields thin well into the Open era; through the 1970s many leading players skipped it. The tournament settled at Kooyong, then made the decisive move in 1988 to the purpose-built Flinders Park, since renamed Melbourne Park, abandoning grass for hard courts at the same time.

10Qui s'y trouve

The largest and most local crowd in Grand Slam tennis: Melbourne families and students on ground passes, a very substantial corporate contingent from Australian business, the touring tennis industry, an expatriate and diaspora following that gives the outside courts their partisan atmosphere, and international visitors combining the tournament with a longer Australian trip.
