Formula 1 around the lake in Albert Park, usually the season opener and the best-attended weekend on the calendar.
An event page tells you when it happens (with how sure we are of the date), why it matters, how the week around it feels, when to arrive and leave, where people stay, how access works, and which events come before and after it on the circuit.
Albert Park is a 5.3-kilometer loop of parkland roads around a lake five kilometers south of central Melbourne, assembled each year and taken apart afterward. Sixteen corners, most of them fast; the layout changed materially in 2022, when turns nine and ten were redesigned and the surface replaced for the first time since 1996.
The weekend is a four-day festival with gates open from Thursday. Attendance is the largest in the sport: a reported 483,934 across the 2026 weekend.
01Why it matters
Melbourne holds the season's opening round in most years and has the largest paying audience in the sport. The promoter is a government corporation and the contract runs to 2037. In our reading it is the calendar's best example of a race that belongs to its city rather than its sponsors.
02The week around it
Melbourne handles this without visible strain: the park closes progressively from late February, the trams keep running, and the suburbs carry on with a Grand Prix attached. In most years the weekend sits beside the Labour Day long weekend and the city's March festivals.
03When to arrive
Thursday, when the gates open, leaving Monday or later. Melbourne rewards extra days and March is its best month.
04Where to stay
The central business district is the default, ten minutes by tram and with the most rooms. Southbank and South Yarra are closer and quieter; St Kilda puts you on the beach at the circuit's southern end; Fitzroy is better for eating than commuting.
05Access and hospitality
The promoter publishes three categories: a park pass covering general admission, reserved grandstands, and hospitality, with Formula 1's Paddock Club alongside its own corporate products. General admission here is genuinely good, with mounded banks around most of the lap.
06Where the social activity happens
Inside the park, the marquee village and the general admission banks along the lake; outside it, the CBD laneways, Southbank's riverside and the beachfront at St Kilda.

09History
The Australian Grand Prix dates from 1928 and a road race at Phillip Island. It joined the world championship in 1985 on a street circuit in Adelaide, which held it for eleven years, and moved to a rebuilt Albert Park in 1996. The contract was extended in 2022, twice, to 2037.
10Who is there
An enormous domestic crowd, much of it on general admission; Melbourne's corporate sector in the marquee village; Asian and European visitors on a longer trip.

Dates on record
| Edition | Dates | Status |
|---|---|---|
| 2027 | Date pendingThe 2027 Formula 1 calendar had not been published as of 6 September 2026, and the promoter's ticket pages were taking registrations for notification rather than publishing dates. No usable pattern exists to estimate from: recent editions have ranged from late March and early April to the first weekend of March. Melbourne's agreement runs to 2037 and requires the race to be one of the first three rounds of the season, so March remains the typical month. | |
| 2026 | CompletedRound 1 of the 2026 Formula 1 season per Formula 1's official calendar, with the race on Sunday 8 March. Reported attendance across the weekend was 483,934, the highest recorded at Melbourne. |
