Art Basel's Gulf edition, staged across M7 and the Doha Design District without conventional booths, under an artistic director.
Art Basel Qatar is the group's fifth fair and its first departure from the format that made the others. It opened in February 2026 across M7, the creative-industries building in Msheireb Downtown Doha, and the adjacent Doha Design District, with 87 galleries from 31 countries showing 84 presentations. There are no conventional booths: the fair is built as one exhibition under an artistic director, the Egyptian-born artist Wael Shawky in the first year, with galleries proposing solo or tightly focused presentations against a stated theme. The result reads as a museum exhibition with prices attached. Ten Special Projects were placed around the city, including a nightly projection at the Museum of Islamic Art.
01Pourquoi c'est important
The Gulf has spent two decades building museums without a market event of international standing, and this is the attempt to supply one. Art Basel reported that nearly half the private collectors at the first edition came from the MENASA region and that more than 85 museums and foundations were represented, among them MoMA, Tate and the Guggenheim.
Our reading is that it is too early to judge. Seventeen thousand visitors is small next to any other Art Basel fair, and the curated format trades volume for coherence. What it has is a fixed slot in the Gulf winter and state backing no other fair enjoys.
02La semaine environnante
Doha in late January and early February is at the best point of its year, and the fair sits inside a wider cultural season. Qatar Museums schedules exhibitions at the Museum of Islamic Art on the Corniche, Mathaf in Education City and the National Museum of Qatar to coincide. Msheireb Downtown Doha, the low-rise district the fair occupies, is walkable and largely pedestrian, with Souq Waqif ten minutes away on foot. The Special Projects placed around the city in 2026 were free and outdoors.
03Quand arriver
Arrive the day before the first VIP day if you hold a card; the sites are close together and one full day covers the main presentations. Public visitors do well with two days, one for M7 and the Design District and one for the museums and the outdoor projects.
04Où séjourner
Msheireb Downtown Doha puts the fair sites, Souq Waqif and the Museum of Islamic Art within walking distance and is the sensible base. West Bay, the high-rise business district, holds the greatest concentration of international hotels and is a short Metro ride away. The Pearl and Lusail are further out and more resort in character. Booking pressure is mild by the standards of the other Art Basel weeks.
05Accès et hospitalité
Two VIP days precede three public days, with invitation cards issued by the fair and by exhibiting galleries rather than sold. Public tickets are sold for the remaining days; the organizer publishes prices each edition and they are not reproduced here. Conversations, which drew close to 2,500 attendees in 2026, is free with booking, and the Special Projects across the city are free and unticketed. UBS is global lead partner. Check Qatar's current visa arrangements before travelling.
06Où se déroule l'activité sociale
Msheireb's pedestrian streets and the Doha Design District courtyards carry the daytime crowd, and M7's own terraces serve as the fair's meeting rooms. In the evening the movement is to Souq Waqif, whose alleys and restaurants stay open late and are entirely public, and to the Museum of Islamic Art park on the Corniche, which has the best view of the skyline. Alcohol is served only in licensed hotels and venues, which shapes where evenings happen.

09Historique
Qatar has been the region's most consistent institutional buyer since the 2000s, with the Museum of Islamic Art, Mathaf and the National Museum of Qatar built in that period. M7 opened in 2021 in Msheireb Downtown Doha as a design and creative-industries hub, and the Doha Design District grew around it. Art Basel announced the fair in 2025 as a partnership rather than a wholly owned edition and staged it in those existing buildings rather than a convention centre, which is what made the non-booth format possible.
10Qui s'y trouve
Collectors and institutional representatives from the Gulf, the wider MENASA region and South Asia, with a smaller but institutionally weighty European and American contingent; Qatar Museums and regional foundation staff; galleries testing a market they mostly reach through Dubai and Abu Dhabi; and a local and expatriate Doha public for whom the fair is the largest contemporary art event the country has staged.
