Paris

France's capital: two fashion weeks, a Grand Slam in June, an autumn art season.

Ora: Art Basel Paris

Paris runs a different kind of calendar than a resort town. Rather than concentrating around one or two weeks a year, the city carries a genuinely major fixture in nearly every month, because it houses the permanent institutions — the couture houses, the auction houses, the museums, the tennis stadium at Porte d'Auteuil — that other destinations' events visit only once. Roland-Garros, the clay-court Grand Slam, runs from late May into June. Fashion supplies four separate weeks across the year: women's ready-to-wear in February/March and September/October, haute couture in January and July, and menswear in January and June. Autumn brings the art and racing calendar to a peak, with Art Basel Paris at the Grand Palais and the Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe at ParisLongchamp both falling in the first half of October, and Paris Photo following in November.

Much of this activity is genuinely public. The Grand Palais, restored and reopened after a multi-year renovation, anchors the autumn art calendar; the Centre Pompidou, by contrast, closed in September 2025 for a renovation not expected to finish before 2030, with its collection touring partner venues in the meantime. The Louvre, the Musée d'Orsay and the Opéra Garnier run on their own permanent schedules regardless of what else is happening in the city that week.

Paris's geography of quarters matters more to how a visitor experiences this calendar than any single building. The Golden Triangle around avenue Montaigne carries the couture houses; Place Vendôme carries fine jewelry and watches; Le Marais and Saint-Germain-des-Pres carry galleries, boutiques and the restaurant trade that the fashion and art calendars lean on. None of these quarters closes for the season the way a Riviera resort does — the difference between a fashion-week week and an ordinary one is a matter of density and reservation pressure, not of the city switching on and off.

03Perché è rilevante

Paris's claim on the international calendar rests on density and permanence rather than a single peak week: nearly every month carries a fixture that matters globally to its own trade, and the city's museums, ateliers and auction houses give that trade a home for the other eleven months as well. In our reading, Paris functions as the calendar's fixed point — other destinations' seasons are described relative to it (the run-up to the European summer, the run-up to the autumn season) far more often than the reverse, which is a different kind of importance than any single week of racing or sailing can produce.

04L'anno, mese per mese

GennaioParis Haute Couture Week and Paris Fashion Week Menswear both run in the second half of the month, overlapping with Maison&Objet's January edition at Villepinte and, at the turn of the month into February, Rétromobile's collector-car show at Porte de Versailles.
FebbraioRétromobile can extend into early February; the women's Paris Fashion Week for Fall/Winter follows toward the end of the month, opening the year's first full ready-to-wear season.
MarzoFall/Winter fashion week typically concludes in early March; the city otherwise returns to its everyday rhythm of museum and gallery openings.
AprileA comparatively quiet month on the events calendar, though the spring exhibition season at the major museums is in full swing.
MagRoland-Garros begins in the last third of the month at Porte d'Auteuil, opening the clay Grand Slam fortnight that carries into June.
GiugnoThe busiest month of the Paris year: Roland-Garros concludes in the first days of the month, the Prix de Diane runs at Chantilly and the Longines Paris Eiffel Jumping fills the Champ de Mars, both in the second half, and Paris Fashion Week Menswear returns for its June edition; in odd-numbered years the Paris Air Show also runs at Le Bourget this month.
LuglioParis Haute Couture Week returns for its summer edition in the first half of the month, drawing the couture houses' clients back to the city, while the museums run a summer program for a mostly visitor rather than trade audience.
AgostoThe quietest month in Paris: many restaurants and small businesses close as residents leave for the month, though the museums and monuments stay open to a largely international visitor base.
SettembreParis Fashion Week's Spring/Summer womenswear shows and Maison&Objet's September edition, run alongside Paris Design Week across the city, mark the start of the autumn season.
OttobreThe autumn art and racing calendar peaks: Art Basel Paris opens under the restored glass roof of the Grand Palais and the Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe is run at ParisLongchamp, both in the first half of the month.
NovembreParis Photo fills the Grand Palais for four days in the second week, and Le Bal des Débutantes is traditionally held in the city toward the end of the month.
DicembreThe holiday season brings the year's heaviest domestic and international visitor traffic, drawn by the illuminations and department-store windows, before the calendar closes quietly on New Year's Eve.

06Come arrivarci e come spostarsi

AeroportiParis Charles de Gaulle (CDG) · 25 km · commerciale — the main international gateway, northeast of the city; Europe's busiest airport by passenger traffic in 2024.Paris Orly (ORY) · 13 km · commerciale — the second commercial airport, south of the city, carrying a large share of domestic and European routes.Paris-Le Bourget (LBG) · 13 km · private aviation — Europe's principal business-aviation airport, northeast of the city; historic host of the Paris Air Show and home to the Musée de l'Air et de l'Espace, with traffic peaking during fashion weeks and the October art season.
Aviazione privataLe Bourget, 13 km northeast of the city, is Europe's busiest business-aviation airport and the arrival point for most private traffic tied to fashion weeks, Roland-Garros and the October art and racing season.
ElicotteroHelicopter access into central Paris is tightly restricted; scheduled and charter helicopter services mainly connect the city's airports onward to the Riviera and other French destinations rather than operating within Paris itself.
MarinePort de Plaisance de Paris-Arsenal — the city's main pleasure-boat marina, between the Bastille and the Seine; river cruisers and barges rather than seagoing yachts.
Come spostarsiThe Metro and RER network covers the city and its airports, including direct RER B service to Charles de Gaulle and Orly's own rail link. Gare du Nord carries Eurostar service to London (about two hours fifteen minutes) and Thalys to Brussels and Amsterdam; Gare Montparnasse and Gare de Lyon carry the TGV network south and west, reaching Le Mans in about an hour and Bordeaux in a little over two. A citywide bike-share network and dense taxi and ride-hail availability cover shorter trips; driving in the center is generally discouraged by both cost and congestion.

07Dove si trovano le cose

Quartieri

Le Maraisthe dense historic quarter of galleries, boutiques and the Musée Picasso, spanning the 3rd and 4th arrondissements.
Saint-Germain-des-Presthe Left Bank's literary and gallery quarter, with its historic cafes and the Bon Marché department store nearby.
The Golden Triangleavenue Montaigne, avenue George-V and the Champs-Élysées, the address for the couture houses and flagship stores.
Place Vendômethe jewelry and fine-watch square beside the Ritz, in the 1st arrondissement.
Île Saint-Louis and Île de la Citéthe two river islands at the historic center, holding Notre-Dame and the Sainte-Chapelle.
The 16th arrondissementa residential quarter toward Trocadéro, with the Palais de Tokyo and the Musée d'Art Moderne.

Aree dell'hotel

The grand hotels around Place Vendôme, rue de Rivoli and avenue Montaigne are the traditional address for fashion-week and auction-season visitors, several of them landmarks in their own right. Saint-Germain and Le Marais offer a smaller-scale, more residential register on the Left Bank and in the historic center respectively. Because fashion weeks and Roland-Garros draw from the whole city rather than one quarter, hotel demand tightens citywide during those weeks rather than concentrating in a single district the way a resort's does.

Quartieri della ristorazione

Saint-Germain-des-Pres and Le Marais carry the greatest density of restaurants for a general visitor. The Golden Triangle's hotel dining rooms are closely tied to the fashion houses nearby, and reservation pressure in the 8th arrondissement, near the Grand Palais, rises sharply during the October art and auction weeks.

Istituzioni culturali

Musée du Louvrethe world's most visited museum, anchoring the Right Bank's museum quarter.
Musée d'Orsaythe Impressionist and Post-Impressionist collection, housed in a former railway station on the Left Bank.
Centre Pompidouthe modern and contemporary art museum, closed to the public since September 2025 for a renovation not expected to finish before 2030; its collection is touring partner venues in the meantime, with the Grand Palais hosting some of its exhibitions.
Palais Garnierthe nineteenth-century opera house that gives its name to the Opera de Paris ballet and opera companies.
Grand Palaisthe restored glass-roofed exhibition hall that anchors the autumn art calendar, including Art Basel Paris.

Shopping

The Golden Triangle around avenue Montaigne carries the couture houses' own flagship stores; Place Vendôme and rue de la Paix carry fine jewelry and watches; the Faubourg Saint-Honoré adds a further concentration of luxury boutiques. Le Marais offers a more independent, concept-store register, and the grands magasins — Galeries Lafayette and Le Bon Marché among them — remain the city's department-store landmarks.

08Come cambia il luogo

Paris does not open and close by season the way a resort does; its clearest seasonal markers are the citywide quiet of August, when many restaurants and small businesses close as residents leave, and the surge of both trade and tourist traffic around fashion weeks, Roland-Garros and the October art and auction season, when hotel and restaurant demand tightens across many neighborhoods at once rather than in a single quarter.

09Storia

Paris's identity as a fashion and culture capital is rooted in the nineteenth century: Baron Haussmann's rebuilding of the city between 1853 and 1870 created the boulevards that still structure it, and the Universal Expositions of 1889 and 1900, which gave the city the Eiffel Tower, established Paris's Belle Époque identity as a global showcase. Haute couture as an industry developed alongside this period and was formalized over the twentieth century into the ready-to-wear and couture fashion-week structure the city still runs. The art and auction calendar's newest fixture, what is now Art Basel Paris, began in 2022 as Paris+ par Art Basel, succeeding the FIAC fair that had run since 1974, and took the Art Basel name for its 2024 edition. The Centre Pompidou's 2025 closure for a multi-year renovation is the most recent turning point in the city's museum landscape, temporarily shifting weight toward the Grand Palais and the Louvre.
