Palm Beach

An American winter resort island, in season from Thanksgiving to the U.S. Open Polo final.

A destination page is organised around time: when the place matters, which events make it matter, and how it changes across the year — then the practical geography (airports, marinas, neighborhoods, hotel areas).

Palm Beach is an 18-mile barrier island off Florida's southeastern coast, never wider than three-quarters of a mile, separated from the mainland city of West Palm Beach by the Intracoastal Waterway. Henry Flagler built the town from nothing in the 1890s, extending his Florida East Coast Railway south and opening the resort hotels that drew the first winter colony from the American Northeast. The roughly 9,000 residents counted in the 2020 census are reported to swell toward 25,000 each winter, when seasonal residents return to estates and apartments left largely empty the rest of the year.

That seasonal rhythm, not any single fixture, defines Palm Beach's calendar. A run of galas, art and antiques fairs and a Ferrari concours on the island, alongside twelve straight weeks of show jumping and a full polo season in nearby Wellington, fill the months from around Thanksgiving to Easter, after which the town empties out for a quiet, hurricane-season summer.

03Why it matters

Palm Beach's claim on the calendar is that of an American answer to Europe's winter resorts: a small, wealthy town whose season was built deliberately, by one developer, as a winter alternative to the spas and hotels Gilded Age fortunes had previously traveled to. Its equestrian and polo scene in neighboring Wellington has since outgrown the island's own society calendar of galas and antiques fairs, drawing a larger and more international audience. In our reading, Palm Beach now functions as a paired system: the island for its historic social season, Wellington for the sport that now carries the bigger crowd.

04The year, month by month

JanuaryThe International Red Cross Ball at The Breakers traditionally opens the social season in the first or second week of January, as the Winter Equestrian Festival begins in Wellington.
FebruaryThe Cavallino Classic Ferrari concours and the Palm Beach Show's antiques and jewelry fair both fall around Presidents' Day weekend.
MarchThe Palm Beach International Boat Show fills North Flagler Drive in the last week of March.
AprilThe U.S. Open Polo Championship's final, in the second half of April, traditionally closes the winter season.
MayThe seasonal population has largely left; Palm Beach settles into its quieter off-season pace.
JuneHurricane season opens on June 1, and the town's part-time population stays away.
JulyHigh summer heat and humidity keep visitor numbers at their lowest.
AugustDeep in the off-season and the hurricane season, with little public event activity.
SeptemberThe quietest month of the calendar, with the winter season's return still weeks off.
OctoberPreparations for the equestrian season and the opening galas begin as hurricane season winds down.
NovemberSeasonal residents begin returning around Thanksgiving, the informal start of the winter population swell.
DecemberThe town fills through the holidays ahead of January's Red Cross Ball and the equestrian season's opening weeks.

06Getting there and around

AirportsPalm Beach International, renamed Donald J. Trump International Airport in July 2026 (DJT) · 5 km · commercial — just west of the town across the Intracoastal; the airport's code changed from PBI to DJT on August 18, 2026, though some booking and display systems were still showing the former code in the weeks after.
Private aviationBusiness jet traffic uses FBOs including Signature Flight Support at the region's main airport; Boca Raton Airport, about forty minutes south, is a smaller field also used during the Cavallino Classic's programme.
MarinasPalm Harbor Marina — on the West Palm Beach waterfront, host to the Palm Beach International Boat Show's superyacht section.
Getting aroundPalm Beach's commercial core is walkable, though most visitors arrive by car; bridges over the Intracoastal Waterway connect the island to West Palm Beach, where the airport, Amtrak and Tri-Rail commuter rail are based. Wellington has no rail service and runs entirely on local roads.

07Where things are

Neighborhoods

Palm Beach (the island)an 18-mile barrier island holding Worth Avenue and the town's grand estates, never wider than three-quarters of a mile.
West Palm Beachthe mainland city across the Intracoastal, holding the Convention Center, Flagler Drive's waterfront and most of the area's hotel capacity.
Wellingtonan inland village about twenty minutes west, built up around the equestrian and polo grounds that fill it each winter.

Hotel areas

Palm Beach island holds a small stock of grand hotels near Worth Avenue, the traditional address for the season's calendar, but most visitor capacity for the boat show, the Palm Beach Show and the Cavallino Classic sits across the water in West Palm Beach. Wellington has its own smaller hotel and rental supply built around the equestrian festival's twelve weeks.

Dining districts

Worth Avenue's side streets carry the island's own formal restaurant trade. West Palm Beach's Clematis Street and CityPlace hold a larger, more varied scene, and Wellington's restaurants expand considerably during the equestrian season.

Cultural institutions

Flagler Museum (Whitehall)Henry Flagler's 1902 Beaux-Arts mansion, now a museum of the Gilded Age era that built Palm Beach.
The Society of the Four Artsa cultural campus on the island with galleries, a library and gardens, founded in 1936.
Norton Museum of ArtWest Palm Beach's principal art museum.

Shopping

Worth Avenue, four blocks of boutiques between the Intracoastal and the Atlantic, is Palm Beach's central shopping address, developed from 1918 around the Everglades Club and still run under the Worth Avenue Association's design guidelines. CityPlace, across the water, offers a larger, more contemporary retail mix.

08How the place changes

The island's population is reported to roughly triple between its off-season low and its winter peak, filling from around Thanksgiving through a calendar that closes with the U.S. Open Polo Championship's final in late April; May through November run at year-round-resident pace, inside the Atlantic hurricane season.

09History

Henry Flagler's decision to extend his railway to Palm Beach in the 1890s built the town from nothing: his Royal Poinciana Hotel opened in 1894, The Breakers in 1896, and his own mansion, Whitehall, in 1902. Worth Avenue's development began after the Everglades Club opened in 1918, drawing the architect Addison Mizner's Mediterranean Revival style that still defines the island. Marjorie Merriweather Post built Mar-a-Lago as a private estate in the late 1920s and left it to the federal government in 1973 in the hope it would serve as a winter White House; it returned to her family in 1981 and was sold in 1985 to Donald Trump, who converted it into a private club. Wellington's growth as an equestrian center began in the 1970s and now hosts what its organizer describes as the largest and longest horse show in the world.
