Mykonos is a small, dry, granite island in the central Cyclades, shaped by the meltemi, the seasonal wind that gave it the old nickname "Island of the Winds." For most of antiquity it mattered less on its own account than as the neighbor of Delos, two kilometers offshore, where Apollo was said to have been born; because Delos forbade births and deaths on its sacred ground, Mykonos absorbed much of that ordinary life instead.
The whitewashed hill town of Chora, with its Little Venice waterfront quarter and the windmills above the harbor, is the island's built center. Its identity as a beach and nightlife destination dates only from the mid-twentieth century; by the 1980s a run of beach clubs along the south coast had made Mykonos one of the Aegean's most visited islands relative to its size. It keeps a fixed season, open from around Orthodox Easter to late October and closed the rest of the year.

03Por qué es relevante
Mykonos holds its place on the international summer map through a concentration of licensed beach clubs along a short stretch of coast, venues such as Nammos at Psarou and Scorpios at Paraga, operating as ordinary businesses under Greek tourism licensing. In our reading, the island's real distinction is proximity: nowhere else in the Aegean puts a beach-club coast two kilometers from a UNESCO site as significant as Delos, and the two are usually visited as one trip. For a visitor without a table booked, Chora's old town, the windmills and the Delos crossing cost little and account for most of what the island is known for.

Zonas del hotel
Chora puts visitors within walking distance of the old town, Little Venice and the Old Port's boats to Delos. The south-coast bays trade that walkable center for direct beach and beach-club access. Ano Mera offers a quieter, more inland alternative to both.
Zonas gastronómicas
Little Venice and Chora's streets carry the island's harbor-front restaurants and bars. The south coast's beach clubs, among them Nammos, Scorpios and Cavo Paradiso, run their own restaurant and bar operations as licensed venues through the season.

Compras
Matoyianni Street and the surrounding lanes of Chora hold the island's concentration of boutiques and jewelers, busiest in the evenings through the summer season.
08Cómo cambia el lugar
Mykonos keeps one of the clearest seasons in the Cyclades: closed from November to around Orthodox Easter, when the island runs on its resident population, then open in full from May through October, with July and August carrying the heaviest crowds and the strongest meltemi winds.
09Historia
Greek myth placed the island's granite boulders as the petrified remains of giants defeated by Heracles, and named it for a grandson of Apollo. In antiquity Mykonos lived in the shadow of neighboring Delos, Apollo's sanctuary, absorbing much of the ordinary life the sacred island's own religious law forbade. It passed through Roman, Byzantine, Venetian rule from 1390 and Ottoman control from 1537, and Manto Mavrogenous, a Mykoniot who spent her family's fortune equipping ships, became a notable figure of the 1821 Greek War of Independence. Mykonos gained an international following only from the mid-twentieth century onward, building the beach-club economy the south coast still runs on.
