Miami was incorporated in 1896 with roughly 300 residents, after the citrus grower Julia Tuttle persuaded the railroad builder Henry Flagler to extend his Florida East Coast line south past the freeze line that had wiped out that winter's citrus crop further north; Flagler's railway, not any older settlement, is what put a city where a trading post on the Miami River had stood. Just across Biscayne Bay, the barrier island that became Miami Beach was drained and platted a generation later by the developers John Collins and Carl Fisher, and it is that island's Art Deco hotel district, built through the 1920s and 1930s and restored from near-demolition starting in the 1970s, that supplies most of the postcard image of Miami today. The city proper holds close to 490,000 residents and anchors a metropolitan area of more than six million, over 70 percent Hispanic or Latino, a demographic reality that runs through the food, language and business culture of every district described below.
Miami's international calendar is organized around two industries that arrived decades apart. Art Basel Miami Beach, staged each December since 2002, built a genuine global art-world stop out of a city better known until then for spring break and cruise tourism, and it now anchors a Miami Art Week of more than two dozen satellite fairs spread across Miami Beach and the mainland. Formula 1 arrived twenty years later, in 2022, laying a temporary circuit around Hard Rock Stadium for a May race now contracted through 2041. Tennis (the Miami Open, in March) and yachting (two separate boat shows, one in February and the other at the Fort Lauderdale end of the region in late October) fill out a year that otherwise runs on tourism, cruise traffic through PortMiami — the world's busiest cruise port — and the ordinary business of a city that functions as the commercial capital of Latin America without being in Latin America.
Greater Miami spreads across four distinct quadrants — the downtown core and Brickell's financial towers to the east, Coral Gables and Coconut Grove to the south, Little Havana and the western suburbs, and Wynwood, the Design District and Midtown to the north — with Miami Beach sitting apart on its own barrier island, reached by causeway. That geography, built almost entirely on drained wetland and reclaimed shoreline, also makes Miami one of the most exposed major American cities to sea-level rise and storm surge, a fact that shapes municipal politics far more than it shapes the visitor experience of any single week.

03Por qué es relevante
Miami's claim on the international calendar is younger and more deliberately built than most: Art Basel's organizers chose Miami Beach in 2002 specifically because South Florida had collectors and no fair, and the bet paid off well enough that the city's name is now shorthand for a December art week rather than for spring break. Formula 1's 2022 arrival was a similar calculation from the other direction — the sport wanted an American race with a resort backdrop and sponsor access, and Miami supplied both from a parking lot around a football stadium. In our reading, what actually holds Miami's calendar together is neither art nor motorsport but the city's position as the primary hinge between the United States and Latin America: much of the money and audience behind these events moves through Miami because the city's Latin American business and cultural ties make it the obvious neutral ground.

07Dónde están las cosas
Barrios
Zonas del hotel
Ocean Drive and Collins Avenue in South Beach hold Miami's best-known concentration of hotels, most of them small-scale Art Deco buildings from the 1930s and 1940s rather than large resorts, which keeps room counts limited relative to demand during the Grand Prix and Art Week. Mid-Beach carries the area's larger mid-century towers, and Brickell and downtown offer a business-district alternative closer to the Grand Prix circuit and the cruise port. Fort Lauderdale, forty minutes north, absorbs overflow demand during the biggest weeks and is the natural base for the autumn boat show regardless.
Zonas gastronómicas
Wynwood and the Design District carry Miami's most visible contemporary restaurant scene, largely built up alongside the galleries over the past decade. Brickell serves the financial district's lunch and after-work trade. Little Havana's Calle Ocho remains the city's reference point for Cuban food, and South Beach's Lincoln Road and Ocean Drive carry the tourist-facing restaurant trade at its densest.
Instituciones culturales
Compras
The Design District carries Miami's concentration of designer flagship stores, purpose-built over the past fifteen years alongside its galleries. Bal Harbour Shops, north of Miami Beach proper, is the area's other established luxury retail center. Lincoln Road's pedestrian mall in South Beach mixes more accessible retail with restaurants and street life.
08Cómo cambia el lugar
Miami's year splits cleanly along the hurricane season: a dry, internationally visited stretch from roughly November to April carries nearly every major fixture on this list, while the wet, hot months from June to November are the low season for both weather and events, broken only by the boat-show and tennis calendar at each end. December and February-March are the two visible peaks; August is the visible trough.
09Historia
Miami was incorporated in 1896 after Julia Tuttle, one of the only women credited with founding a major American city, persuaded Henry Flagler to extend his Florida East Coast Railway south of the freeze line that had devastated citrus growers elsewhere in the state that winter. Miami Beach followed as a separate, engineered project: developers John Collins and Carl Fisher drained and filled the barrier island across Biscayne Bay in the 1910s, and the Art Deco hotel district that still defines South Beach was built there through the 1920s and 1930s before falling into disrepair by mid-century. The preservationist Barbara Baer Capitman's campaign, beginning in 1976, saved that district from demolition and got it onto the National Register of Historic Places in 1979, setting up its second life as a design and tourism landmark. Cuban immigration after 1959, and especially the 1980 Mariel boatlift, remade the city's demographics and built the Latin American business ties that now run through its economy; Art Basel's decision to open a Miami Beach edition in 2002 gave that increasingly international city its first fixture on the global cultural calendar, and Formula 1's arrival in 2022 added a second.
