Mallorca

The Balearics' largest island, its capital Palma a year-round yachting and refit hub.

Uma página de destino está organizada em torno do tempo: quando o local é relevante, que eventos o tornam relevante e como evolui ao longo do ano — seguido da geografia prática (aeroportos, marinas, bairros, zonas hoteleiras).

Mallorca is the largest Balearic Island and, unlike smaller Ibiza, keeps a working city at its center: Palma, a Roman foundation of 123 BC with roughly 430,000 residents, runs year-round rather than switching off for winter. La Seu Cathedral, begun after the 1229 Aragonese conquest and finished in 1601, stands on the waterfront on the site of the city's former mosque.

The island divides between that city and two kinds of coast: the Serra de Tramuntana mountains, a UNESCO cultural landscape since 2011, and the resort beaches at Alcudia, Pollenca and Palma itself. Sailing gives Palma an earlier calendar than the beach season: Club de Mar and the STP shipyard have made it an established Mediterranean yacht-refit port, and the spring Palma International Boat Show is widely described as opening the Mediterranean's yachting season.

03Por que importa

Palma's claim on the yachting calendar rests on infrastructure rather than spectacle: the city combines a working refit yard at STP, the Club de Mar marina, and a spring boat show much of the industry treats as the season's start, ahead of anything comparable at Cannes or Monaco. In our reading, that makes Palma more of a service and staging hub for owners and crews than a destination built around one social week. For a visitor, La Seu Cathedral's waterfront silhouette and the old town's streets cost nothing to see, and the boat show itself is open to the public.

07Onde as coisas estão

Bairros

Casc Antic (Old Town)the historic center around La Seu Cathedral, with narrow streets largely closed to through traffic.
La Llotjathe harbor-adjacent quarter named for its fifteenth-century merchants' exchange, now dense with bars and restaurants.
Santa Catalinaa former fishing quarter west of the old town, now one of Palma's denser dining districts.
Paseo Maritimothe harbor promenade linking the old town to Club de Mar and the marinas to the west.

Áreas do hotel

Palma's old town puts visitors within walking distance of the cathedral and harbor. The Paseo Maritimo toward Club de Mar offers a marina-facing register. Beyond the city, the resort bays at Alcudia, Pollenca and Playa de Palma hold the island's seasonal beach-hotel stock, on a schedule closer to Ibiza's than to Palma's own.

Zonas de restauração

Santa Catalina, a former fishing quarter, carries the densest concentration of restaurants in the city. La Llotja and the old harbor hold a more visitor-facing mix, and the Paseo Maritimo caters to boat traffic through Club de Mar.

Instituições culturais

La Seu Cathedralbegun after the 1229 conquest and completed in 1601, built on the waterfront site of the city's former mosque.
Palau de l'Almudainathe former Moorish alcazar beside the cathedral, still used as an official royal residence.
Fundacio Miro Mallorcabuilt around Joan Miro's studios, where the painter worked from 1956 until his death in 1983.
Es Baluard Museum of Modern and Contemporary Artbuilt into the city's sixteenth-century sea walls.

Compras

Passeig del Born and the streets around Jaume III hold Palma's main shopping district, within walking distance of the old town and the cathedral.

08Como o lugar se transforma

Mallorca runs two calendars at once: Palma stays open through winter as a functioning city, while the island's beach resorts follow a season that opens in May and closes by October. The spring boat show and June's Superyacht Cup Palma give the city its own early-season rhythm.

09Histórico

Quintus Caecilius Metellus founded Palma as a Roman colony in 123 BC, and the city passed through Vandal, Byzantine and, from 902, Moorish rule before James I of Aragon took it in 1229; La Seu Cathedral rose on the site of the main mosque over the following centuries. Mallorca's mass tourism began in the 1950s and 1960s, concentrated on the resort coasts rather than Palma itself, while the Serra de Tramuntana was listed as a UNESCO cultural landscape in 2011. The city's yachting infrastructure, anchored by Club de Mar and the STP refit yard, built up alongside that tourism.
