Los Angeles

The film industry's home, busiest during its own January-to-March awards season.

Uma página de destino está organizada em torno do tempo: quando o local é relevante, que eventos o tornam relevante e como evolui ao longo do ano — seguido da geografia prática (aeroportos, marinas, bairros, zonas hoteleiras).

Los Angeles began in 1781 as a pueblo of 44 settlers established under Spanish colonial governor Felipe de Neve on the site of Yaanga, a village of the indigenous Tongva people; it passed through Mexican rule before incorporating as an American city in 1850. Little of that early history is visible today in a metropolitan area of some 12.9 million people that spreads across river basin, coastal plain and mountain pass, held together less by any historic center than by a freeway network built through the twentieth century. The city proper holds close to 3.9 million residents, the second-most of any American city, inside a county of independent municipalities — Beverly Hills, West Hollywood, Santa Monica and others — that sit administratively apart from Los Angeles while functioning as continuous parts of the same urban fabric.

The film industry's arrival in the 1910s, drawn west by reliable light and distance from patent enforcement on the East Coast, gave the region the identity it still exports: Hollywood as both a neighborhood and a shorthand for American commercial cinema. That industry's own ceremony calendar, rather than any single trade fair or sporting fixture, now supplies most of what makes Los Angeles a stop on the international calendar. The Golden Globes in January and the Academy Awards in March bracket an awards season watched well beyond the industry itself, and the Milken Institute Global Conference each May adds a genuine business-and-policy fixture to a city whose economy runs on entertainment, aerospace, technology and international trade in roughly that order of visibility.

Outside those weeks, Los Angeles functions as an unusually large collection of distinct districts rather than a single downtown-centered city: Beverly Hills and the Westside for retail and old-money residential streets, Hollywood for the industry's public image, downtown for its civic and financial core, and a fifty-mile coastline from Malibu to San Pedro that most visitors experience only at its northern end, around Santa Monica and Venice.

03Por que importa

Los Angeles holds its place on the international calendar because it is the place the awards themselves are handed out, not because any outside industry chose it as a convenient venue the way Formula 1 chose Miami or the art trade chose Basel. The Academy Awards, the Golden Globes and the smaller ceremonies clustered around them are Los Angeles exporting its own trade show to a global television and streaming audience. In our reading, the Milken Institute Global Conference matters for a different reason: it is evidence that Los Angeles's business calendar is broader than entertainment, though it has not yet built the kind of second identity that, say, yachting gave Monaco alongside motorsport.

04O ano, mês a mês

JaneiroThe Golden Globes open the film industry's own awards season on a Sunday evening in Beverly Hills, the first of the year's run of industry ceremonies.
FevereiroFrieze Los Angeles takes over a temporary structure at Santa Monica Airport for the last weekend of the month, the West Coast's turn on the international art-fair calendar.
MarçoAwards season closes with the Academy Awards on a Sunday evening at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, the single most watched night of the Los Angeles year.
AbrilA quiet month by comparison: awards season has ended and the summer studio release calendar is still weeks away, with premiere activity that functions more as marketing than as a social-season fixture.
MaiThe Milken Institute Global Conference fills the Beverly Hilton for four days in the first week of the month with a dense public programme of finance, policy and technology panels.
JunhoSummer film releases dominate the industry's attention, with red-carpet premieres running through the season on a studio-by-studio schedule rather than a fixed date.
JulhoHigh summer: the entertainment industry's production calendar continues, but there is no major fixture on the city's own public event calendar this month.
AgostoStill quiet on the public calendar; the film and television industry's own year runs more on production and pilot seasons than on visible public events.
SetembroThe autumn festival circuit draws industry attention away from Los Angeles toward Venice, Telluride and Toronto, where many of the films that later compete at the Oscars first premiere.
OutubroA shoulder month before the year's second cultural peak, as galleries and museums build toward November openings and benefit season.
NovembroThe LACMA Art+Film Gala, one of the entertainment industry's largest single philanthropic evenings, is held at the museum in the first half of the month.
DezembroThe film industry's For Your Consideration campaign season builds toward January's Golden Globes, alongside the ordinary rhythm of the holiday box office.

AeroportosLos Angeles International (LAX) · 18 km · comercial — the West Coast's principal international gateway and one of the world's busiest airports by passenger traffic.
Aviação privadaVan Nuys Airport, one of the world's busiest general-aviation fields by annual takeoffs and landings, handles most of the region's private and business jet traffic. Santa Monica Airport, already restricted to shorter-runway aircraft under a 2017 agreement with the FAA, is scheduled to close entirely on December 31, 2028, and in the meantime doubles as the tented site of Frieze Los Angeles each February.
MarinasMarina del Rey — North America's largest man-made small-craft harbor, with slips for about 5,000 boats, on the coast south of Santa Monica.
Deslocação e transporteLos Angeles is built around the car, and a rental or ride-hailing service is close to essential: the Metro rail network has expanded steadily but still covers only part of the county, and the Westside, Hollywood, downtown and Beverly Hills sit far enough apart that distances are measured in freeway minutes rather than walking blocks. Awards season adds its own disruption, with streets around the Dolby Theatre and the Beverly Hilton closed or heavily marshaled for several days around each ceremony.

Bairros

Beverly Hillsan independent city surrounded by Los Angeles, built around Rodeo Drive and the Golden Triangle shopping district.
Hollywoodthe historic center of the film industry's public image, holding the Walk of Fame, the Dolby Theatre and the TCL Chinese Theatre.
Bel Air and Holmby Hillshillside residential enclaves west of Beverly Hills, among the region's most secluded addresses.
West Hollywoodan independent city between Beverly Hills and Hollywood, dense with restaurants, nightlife and the Sunset Strip.
Santa Monica and Venicethe Westside's beach cities, more casual in register and home to Santa Monica Airport and Marina del Rey.
Downtown Los Angelesthe historic and civic core, with Walt Disney Concert Hall and The Broad among its cultural anchors.

Áreas do hotel

Beverly Hills and the Sunset Strip hold the traditional concentration of large hotels serving awards season and the Milken conference, within a short drive of the Beverly Hilton and the Dolby Theatre. West Hollywood offers a denser, younger register along the same corridor. Santa Monica's beachfront hotels serve a more leisure-oriented visitor, and downtown's newer towers put conference and business travelers closer to the Convention Center than to Hollywood.

Zonas de restauração

West Hollywood's Sunset Strip and Melrose Avenue carry the industry's own restaurant trade. Beverly Hills' Golden Triangle mixes retail with dining aimed at shoppers rather than nightlife. Downtown's Arts District has built a newer restaurant scene inside former warehouses over the past decade.

Instituições culturais

Getty Centera hilltop museum campus designed by Richard Meier, reached by a cable-drawn tram, with free admission.
Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA)on Wilshire Boulevard's Miracle Mile, host of the annual Art+Film Gala.
Hollywood Bowlan outdoor amphitheater in the hills above Hollywood, the summer home of the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
Dolby Theatrethe Academy Awards' home venue at the Ovation Hollywood complex.

Compras

Rodeo Drive and the surrounding Golden Triangle in Beverly Hills remain the region's best-known concentration of designer flagship stores. Melrose Avenue mixes streetwear and vintage retail with higher-end boutiques closer to West Hollywood.

08Como o lugar se transforma

Los Angeles has no real off-season by weather, which shifts its calendar's rhythm onto the entertainment industry's own year: a concentrated run of award ceremonies from January to March, a business-and-policy week in May, a quiet mid-year while attention turns to other festivals, and a November philanthropic peak at LACMA before the cycle turns back toward January.

09Histórico

Los Angeles began in 1781 as a pueblo of 44 settlers established under the Spanish colonial governor Felipe de Neve on the site of Yaanga, a village of the indigenous Tongva people; it passed to Mexican and then American control before incorporating as a city in 1850. The film industry's arrival in the 1910s, drawn west partly by reliable sunlight and distance from patent enforcement on the East Coast, built Hollywood's identity within a generation, and the studio system that followed made the awards ceremonies described above into fixtures long before most of the rest of this calendar existed. Beverly Hills incorporated separately in 1914, partly to control its own water rights, and has remained an independent city inside Los Angeles ever since; West Hollywood did the same as recently as 1984. The sprawl and car-dependent geography that still shape a visitor's experience today are a twentieth-century product of the same growth that built the studio lots and, later, the aerospace industry that for a time rivaled entertainment as the region's defining business.
