A destination page is organised around time: when the place matters, which events make it matter, and how it changes across the year — then the practical geography (airports, marinas, neighborhoods, hotel areas).
Ibiza is the third-largest Balearic Island, settled by Phoenician traders in 654 BC and passed since through Carthaginian, Roman, Byzantine and Moorish rule before the Crown of Aragon took it in 1235. Dalt Vila, the walled old town, and the Phoenician-Punic necropolis of Puig des Molins are both part of a UNESCO World Heritage listing granted in 1999, older than the island's reputation for nightlife.
That reputation dates from a 1960s counterculture arrival, followed from the 1970s by a licensed club industry built around venues such as Pacha, founded in 1973, and later Amnesia, Privilege and Ushuaia. The island's economy now runs on a fixed season, opening in late April and closing by mid-October, with almost everything built for visitors shut for the other six months.

03Why it matters
Ibiza's clubs are licensed commercial venues under Balearic entertainment regulation, and the International Music Summit each April functions as the industry's own conference, drawing label executives and promoters rather than only visitors. In our reading, what distinguishes Ibiza from other Mediterranean islands is how much of its visitor economy, hotels included, is built around a small number of licensed venues' own opening and closing dates rather than the weather. For a visitor without a club ticket, Dalt Vila's old town, the Puig des Molins necropolis and the Saturday market at Las Dalias cost little or nothing to see.

06Getting there and around
07Where things are
Neighborhoods
Hotel areas
Ibiza Town and its marina put visitors within walking distance of Dalt Vila and the harbor. Platja d'en Bossa's hotels sit alongside the beach clubs that anchor the area's daytime and evening activity. Santa Eulalia offers a quieter register on the east coast, Sant Antoni a more nightlife-oriented one on the west.
Dining districts
The Marina and Sa Penya below Dalt Vila carry Ibiza Town's harbor-front restaurants. Platja d'en Bossa's beach clubs run restaurants by day before switching to a club program by evening. Santa Eulalia's promenade holds a quieter, more year-round mix.
Cultural institutions
Shopping
Ibiza Town's streets below Dalt Vila hold the main concentration of boutiques and jewelers. The Saturday hippy market at Las Dalias, inland at Sant Carles, is the island's best-known market and runs seasonally.
08How the place changes
Ibiza's year divides sharply between an off-season of roughly six months, from mid-October to late April, when most clubs and many hotels close entirely, and a fixed summer season opened by the clubs' own announcements each spring and closed by a run of parties in late September and early October.
09History
Phoenician traders founded a port here in 654 BC; the island passed through Carthaginian, Roman, Byzantine and Moorish control before the Crown of Aragon took it in 1235, and Dalt Vila's fortifications predate its tourist history by centuries. Ibiza's reinvention began with a 1960s counterculture arrival, followed by the licensed club industry that has defined it since: Pacha opened in 1973, and Amnesia and Privilege followed, building the venue landscape the International Music Summit, founded in 2008, now treats as an industry. UNESCO listed Dalt Vila, Puig des Molins and the surrounding Posidonia meadows as a World Heritage site in 1999.
