Florence

The Renaissance's home city, busiest each January and June for Pitti Uomo.

A destination page is organised around time: when the place matters, which events make it matter, and how it changes across the year — then the practical geography (airports, marinas, neighborhoods, hotel areas).

A Roman garrison town from 59 BC, Florence grew under Medici rule from the fifteenth century onward into the city most historians credit as the Renaissance's point of origin. Florence briefly served as capital of the new Kingdom of Italy between 1865 and 1871, before Rome took the role. Today the city holds a little over 360,000 residents, a population regularly outnumbered by day visitors to the historic center.

Away from its museums, Florence carries one significant fixture of the international calendar: Pitti Uomo, the menswear trade show staged at the Fortezza da Basso twice a year, in January and June, drawing designers and buyers ahead of the Milan and Paris menswear weeks that follow. Outside those two weeks, Florence runs as one of Europe's most visited heritage cities, its calendar set by museum hours and the Tuscan tourist season rather than by any trade or sporting fixture.

03Why it matters

Florence's place in this calendar rests on two largely unrelated facts: a density of Renaissance art that makes it one of the world's most visited historic centers regardless of season, and Pitti Uomo's position as the menswear trade's first stop each cycle, ahead of Milan and Paris. The two rarely intersect, and the city's broader reputation owes far more to the former than to the latter.

04The year, month by month

JanuaryPitti Uomo's January edition brings menswear buyers and designers to the Fortezza da Basso, opening the season ahead of Milan's and Paris's men's shows; otherwise Florence is at its quietest and coldest.
FebruaryA quiet winter month, with shorter museum queues than any other time of year the main appeal for visitors willing to accept cold, often wet weather.
MarchThe first reliable rise in visitor numbers as spring weather returns, well ahead of the summer crowds at the Uffizi and Accademia.
AprilEaster week brings one of the year's sharpest visitor spikes, with the historic center at near capacity for the holiday.
MaySpring's mild weather and long daylight make this one of the more comfortable months for the main sights, without full summer crowds or heat.
JunePitti Uomo's second, larger edition returns menswear buyers to the Fortezza da Basso, coinciding with the start of Florence's hottest and busiest tourist stretch.
JulyHigh summer brings the year's heaviest heat and its largest crowds at the Duomo, Uffizi and Ponte Vecchio alike.
AugustThe Tuscan summer peaks, with many Florentines away and tourism carrying the city's public life almost entirely.
SeptemberCrowds ease slightly as the heat breaks, making early autumn one of the more favorable stretches for sightseeing.
OctoberComfortable autumn weather and thinning crowds make this a favored month among repeat visitors to the museums.
NovemberRain increases and visitor numbers fall to their second-lowest point of the year, behind only deep winter.
DecemberThe Christmas season brings a modest rise in visitors and markets to the historic center, without approaching Easter or summer crowd levels.

06Getting there and around

AirportsFlorence Airport (Amerigo Vespucci / Peretola) (FLR) · 5 km · commercial — close to the center, handling mainly regional and European routes.Pisa International Airport (Galileo Galilei) (PSA) · 80 km · commercial — the larger international gateway for the region, connected to Florence by train and bus in roughly an hour to ninety minutes.
Getting aroundThe historic center is compact, largely closed to non-resident traffic, and walkable end to end. Florence Airport handles regional traffic; Pisa Airport, further away, carries more international arrivals.

07Where things are

Neighborhoods

Centro Storicothe historic core inside the old walls, holding the Duomo, Piazza della Signoria and the Uffizi, largely pedestrianized.
Oltrarnosouth of the Arno, home to artisan workshops, the Pitti Palace and the Boboli Gardens.
San Lorenzothe market quarter around the Medici's own parish church and the Mercato Centrale.
Santa Crocenamed for its basilica, the burial place of Michelangelo, Galileo and Machiavelli among others.

Hotel areas

The streets around the Duomo and Piazza della Signoria hold the historic center's main concentration of hotels, within walking distance of every major sight. Oltrarno, across the river, offers a quieter, more residential alternative near the Pitti Palace. During Pitti Uomo, demand shifts partly toward the Fortezza da Basso, north of the center.

Dining districts

Sant'Ambrogio market and the streets of Oltrarno carry Florence's more local restaurant trade, away from the tourist-priced kitchens immediately around the Duomo. The Mercato Centrale, in San Lorenzo, combines a produce market with food stalls aimed at residents and visitors alike.

Cultural institutions

Uffizi Gallerythe Medici collection's core, one of the most visited museums in Italy.
Galleria dell'Accademiaholds Michelangelo's David.
Cathedral of Santa Maria del FioreBrunelleschi's dome, completed in 1436.
Palazzo Pitti and Boboli Gardensthe former Medici residence, now a museum complex, with gardens open to the public.
Ponte Vecchiothe medieval bridge lined with goldsmiths' shops, the only Florence bridge to survive the Second World War.

Shopping

Via de' Tornabuoni holds the historic center's concentration of luxury boutiques; the Ponte Vecchio's goldsmiths, a trade the bridge has hosted since the sixteenth century, remain a fixture for jewelry.

08How the place changes

Florence's calendar moves with tourism rather than trade: a winter lull, an Easter spike, a hot and crowded summer peak, and a favored, cooler autumn shoulder season. Pitti Uomo's two editions are the only weeks when a specific industry, rather than the general tourist season, sets the city's rhythm.

09History

The Medici family, who rose from banking to rule Florence for three centuries beginning in the fifteenth, financed the painters and architects who defined the Renaissance in the popular imagination, from Botticelli to Michelangelo. The dynasty's collections, willed to the city on the family's extinction in 1737, form the core of the Uffizi's holdings today. Pitti Uomo dates only to 1972, considerably more recent than the buildings that host it.
