Off the southern edge of the Bay of Naples, Capri rises as a limestone island of just over 10 square kilometers, reachable only by sea. The emperor Tiberius governed the Roman Empire from here for the last decade of his reign, retreating to Villa Jovis in AD 27 and never returning to Rome; the villa's ruins remain among the best-preserved imperial residences in Italy. Nineteenth-century rediscovery of the Blue Grotto and a following wave of European writers, artists and expatriates built the island's modern reputation, and by the twentieth century Capri had become one of the Mediterranean's fixed points for visitors seeking a retreat with a longer literary and aristocratic history behind it than most beach resorts can claim. About 13,000 people live across the island's two towns, Capri and the higher, quieter Anacapri.
The island's one dedicated event is Capri, Hollywood, a film festival honoring American cinema held in late December into January, timed to the island's quietest season rather than its high-summer crowds. Outside that week, Capri's calendar is set entirely by the weather and the ferry schedule: a long, well-attended season from Easter to October, and a much smaller, largely local island for the rest of the year.

03Por qué es relevante
Capri's pull rests on geography rather than any single institution: a small, dramatic island close enough to Naples and Sorrento for a day trip but distinct enough, with its vehicle restrictions and cliff-top setting, to feel apart from the mainland entirely. Capri, Hollywood is a modest addition to that reputation, not its source.

07Dónde están las cosas
Barrios
Zonas del hotel
Capri town's Piazzetta and the streets around it hold the island's best-known hotels, within walking distance of the funicular from Marina Grande. Anacapri, higher up Monte Solaro, offers a quieter, less crowded alternative with its own concentration of smaller hotels.
Zonas gastronómicas
The Piazzetta and the lanes around it carry Capri town's restaurant trade; Anacapri's own square holds a smaller, more local equivalent away from the day-trip crowds.
Instituciones culturales
Compras
Via Camerelle and Via Vittorio Emanuele, in Capri town, hold the island's concentration of boutiques, alongside shops selling the island's own limoncello and perfume.
08Cómo cambia el lugar
Capri runs on a hard seasonal switch rather than a gradual one: substantially open from Easter to October, with vehicle restrictions and full ferry schedules in force, and substantially closed the rest of the year outside the brief window around Capri, Hollywood.
09Historia
Capri's Roman history is unusually well documented for a small island: Tiberius built as many as twelve villas here, according to ancient sources, of which Villa Jovis was the grandest. The island's modern tourism history began with the 1826 rediscovery of the Blue Grotto by the German poet August Kopisch, whose account drew the first wave of Northern European visitors; Somerset Maugham, Maxim Gorky and Norman Douglas were among the writers who later made the island a fixture of expatriate literary life.
