01Quién lo sigue

The yachting crowd, who are the constant from the Giraglia in June to the Rolex Cup in September; the Riviera regulars who open the season at Cannes and Monaco and return for the yacht shows; the Italian public, for whom the Palio, the Redentore and Ferragosto are national events; the festival audiences on the Amalfi Coast; and the club crowd in Ibiza and Mykonos, whose season is May to October and whose peak is August. The Mediterranean summer is less a set of events than a set of harbors, and most of its followers are in one place for weeks rather than moving each weekend.

02Por qué estos eventos se vinculan

The coast connects them. From Ibiza's opening parties in May, through Cannes and Monaco, Saint-Tropez and Sardinia, Venice, Siena and Ravello, to the September yacht shows and Les Voiles, the circuit is the western and central Mediterranean between May and October, and its events are the fixed points in a season otherwise defined by heat, the sea and where the boats are. The two Italian civic festivals and the Amalfi music festival are the oldest stops; the yacht shows are the newest; the Riviera's spring events are the entry.

03La progresión habitual

Ibiza's opening season in May, then Cannes for the festival and Monaco for the Grand Prix in the first week of June. The Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta in Porto Cervo and the Rolex Giraglia from Saint-Tropez in June. The Palio in Siena on July 2, the Festa del Redentore in Venice on the third weekend of July, the Ravello Festival across July and August on the Amalfi Coast, the second Palio on August 16. The Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup in Porto Cervo in the first week of September, the Cannes Yachting Festival the week after, the Monaco Yacht Show in the fourth week of September, and Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez into the first days of October to close.

04Geografía

The Riviera from Cannes to Monaco, with Saint-Tropez to the west; the Balearics (Ibiza, Mallorca); Sardinia's Costa Smeralda; the Tyrrhenian coast (Capri, the Amalfi Coast); Tuscany (Siena) and the Venetian lagoon; and, further east, Mykonos. All of it is reachable by sea, which is how a good part of the circuit moves.

05Calendario sugerido

June for the Riviera and Sardinia, when the water is warm, the events are on and the crowds are not yet August's. The third week of July for Venice's Redentore and the first Palio, if Italian civic spectacle is the point. The first week of September in Porto Cervo for the Rolex Cup, or the last week of September in Monaco and Saint-Tropez for the shows and Les Voiles, is the season's best fortnight for anyone who does not like heat. August is for the islands and for those who already have their beds.

06Solapamientos importantes

Cannes and Monaco overlap the Chelsea Flower Show, Villa d'Este, Roland-Garros and Epsom. The Giraglia coincides with Le Mans and the Loro Piana regatta with the Cannes Lions week. The first Palio falls inside Wimbledon and the Paris couture shows. The Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup shares its week with the Venice Film Festival, Monza and the US Open. The Monaco Yacht Show falls in the same days as Milan Fashion Week and the UN General Assembly week.

07Adónde va la gente después

After Les Voiles, to Paris for Art Basel Paris and London for Frieze, or to Fort Lauderdale for the boat show at the end of October. The boats cross to the Caribbean in November. The Riviera reopens with the Bal de la Rose in March.
