December is a short season with a clear shape. It opens in Miami, where Art Basel Miami Beach and Design Miami turn the first week of the month into the largest art week in the Americas, with the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix ending the Formula 1 season on the same weekend and the Antigua Charter Yacht Show opening the Caribbean season a few days later. La Scala's opening night on December 7, the feast of Milan's patron saint, is the one European fixture of the month with a date that never moves. After the middle of the month the calendar has no large public events at all until Boxing Day, when the Rolex Sydney Hobart starts, and New Year's Eve, when Sydney Harbour and the port of Gustavia in St. Barts are the two places the year is seen out.
The rest of December is about places. St. Moritz, Gstaad, Courchevel and Aspen open for the holidays and are at their fullest between Christmas and Epiphany; St. Barts is the same in the Caribbean; Dubai has its winter. The Capri Hollywood film festival runs over the turn of the year on an island that is otherwise closed. The Alba white truffle fair, which began in October, closes in the first days of the month.

The first week belongs to Miami and Abu Dhabi. Miami Art Week runs from the Tuesday previews to the Sunday close, with Design Miami alongside the fair and the satellite fairs across Miami Beach and the Design District; the Grand Prix at Yas Marina is the season's last race and its last podium. La Scala opens on the 7th, and Milan's December begins. The Antigua Charter Yacht Show in the second week is the trade end of the Caribbean season: the crews and brokers are there, and the boats move on to St. Barts and the Grenadines for the holidays.
From the second week to Christmas the calendar is quiet, and the movement is toward the mountains and the islands rather than toward any event. The Alpine resorts open fully by the third week of December; Aspen and Sun Valley the same. From Christmas to New Year the concentration is highest in St. Moritz, Gstaad, Courchevel, Aspen and St. Barts, in that order of altitude, and the Sydney Hobart fleet leaves the harbor on the 26th. New Year's Eve is watched from the harbor in Gustavia and from the foreshore in Sydney. Capri Hollywood runs on the island from late December into January.
January picks up immediately: the men's shows in Milan and Paris in the second week, Wengen and Davos in the third, the Australian Open from the middle of the month.

Miami in the first week of December is warm and usually dry, at the start of its best season. Abu Dhabi is mild. Milan on December 7 is cold and often foggy. The Alps are in early winter, and snow cover in the third week of December varies from year to year; the high resorts (St. Moritz, Courchevel's upper villages) are the safer bet for Christmas skiing, and Gstaad's lower slopes the less reliable. Aspen is in reliable winter by Christmas. St. Barts and Antigua are in the dry season, warm with the trade winds; Sydney is in high summer, and the Hobart fleet has sailed into everything from calms to gales.

The winter season begins in the second week of January with the men's fashion shows, Pitti Uomo and the couture, then the Alps take over: the Lauberhorn, Davos, the Hahnenkamm and the St. Moritz lake events in quick succession. The Caribbean season continues through April, with the St. Barths Bucket in March as its next fixed point. The art calendar's next stop after Miami is BRAFA in Brussels at the end of January, and the film calendar's is the Golden Globes and Sundance.
