What a circuit is, and how to follow one

A circuit is a sequence, not a category: the events people actually attend in order, and the gaps between them.

The category pages on this site group events by kind — art, yachting, tennis. The circuit pages group them by the people who attend them, in the order the year visits them. The European Summer Circuit is not every event in Europe in summer; it is Cannes, Monaco, Ascot, Basel, Wimbledon, Goodwood and the Mediterranean, because a recognizable crowd moves through those stops in that order. The Art Collector Circuit is the fairs and sale weeks the same few thousand people attend. Each circuit page shows its stops as a Season Line with the next dates, a route map, the overlaps with other circuits, and where people tend to go when the sequence ends.

To follow a circuit, start with its page, subscribe to its calendar feed, and read the destination pages for its stops: the practical geography — which airport, which marina, which quarter — is there. The trip planner will tell you what else is happening in any city on any dates.

An event can sit on more than one circuit, and most of the important ones do: the Monaco Grand Prix is a stop on the Formula 1 circuit, the European Summer circuit, the Riviera season and the Mediterranean summer, because four different crowds are in the harbour that week for four different reasons. The Important overlaps section on each circuit page names the weeks where two circuits meet and the reader has to choose; the Where people go afterward section is the part most guides leave out, and the one that makes a circuit a route rather than a list. Circuits are editorial. Their stops and order are decided by the editors, reviewed each season, and changed when the calendar changes, and every circuit has its own calendar feed so that its stops arrive in a diary with their dates and status attached. The sixteen on the site are the ones with a recognizable following; others are added when a sequence proves itself.
