The Season Line

The site's signature component, and how to read it.

The Season Line appears on the home page, on the where-now page, on every circuit page and at the foot of every event page. It shows the season's next stops in date order — one stop per destination, with the defining event of that visit and its dates — and marks the current position with a ring. On the home page it is built from the whole calendar: the significant events of the next five months, collapsed so that consecutive events in one place become one stop. On a circuit page it is that circuit's stops in order. On an event page it is the events before and after this one on its circuit.

Long-running exhibitions and seasons — a six-month biennale, a twelve-week horse-show season — are shown in the listings but excluded from the line, because a line is about movement and they do not move. Dates in the line carry the same status as everywhere else: the organizers' own where confirmed, otherwise the usual pattern.

Reading the line is a matter of three things. The ring marks the stop the calendar is at now, so everything to its left has begun or finished and everything to its right is still to come. Each stop names one destination and the event that defines the visit; where a second event of consequence sits in the same place in the same days, the stop's note names it, and the event's own page lists the rest. The dates under each stop carry the status they carry everywhere: a plain date is confirmed, an expected date is marked as an estimate. The home page pairs the line with the Coming next list and the Also running strip: the list is the fuller version of the same weeks, and the strip is where the long exhibitions and seasons that are excluded from the line are shown, with the dates they run to.
