There is a stretch of the year when the international calendar stops being a list and becomes a route. It begins on the Croisette in the third week of May, when the Cannes Film Festival is in its second week and the hotels along the seafront have been full for ten days. It ends in London in the first week of July, with Wimbledon's second week under way and the crowd that watched the Derby, Ascot and the Queen's Cup beginning to drift toward the coast. Between those two points sit the Monaco Grand Prix, the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Royal Ascot, Art Basel and the opening days of Wimbledon, and the distance between them is never more than a morning's travel.
What makes these weeks different from, say, the autumn — which has as many events — is that they connect. The person leaving Cannes on the Saturday the awards are announced can be in Monaco by lunch, and the Grand Prix is the following weekend. The person leaving Monaco can be at Le Mans for the start of the 24 Hours a week later, in the Royal Enclosure at Ascot the Thursday after that, and in Basel for the fair's public days before Ascot has finished. Nobody does all of it. Enough people do enough of it that the hotels in each place price the sequence as one season.
The Riviera fortnight
Since 2026 the Monaco Grand Prix has been held on the first weekend of June rather than the last of May, which lengthened the gap after Cannes from a few days to about ten. The effect has been to give the Riviera a fortnight rather than a week: Cannes empties on the Sunday after the closing ceremony, and Monaco begins filling the following Wednesday when the yachts start to arrive in Port Hercule for the race that begins the Thursday after that. The stretch of coast between the two — Antibes, Cap Ferrat, Villefranche — is busiest in exactly these days.
The Grand Prix itself is four days, Thursday to Sunday, and the principality is closed to ordinary traffic for most of them. The social geography is fixed: the harbour for the yachts, the Fairmont hairpin and the Casino Square for the grandstands, the hotel terraces above the circuit for the rest. The Historic Grand Prix, run two weeks earlier in even years, brings a quieter version of the same crowd.
Le Mans and the turn north
The 24 Hours of Le Mans falls in the second or third week of June and is the one event in the sequence that is not a city. It is a circuit in a forest with a town attached, and the crowd is enormous and mostly not the crowd of Cannes or Ascot. It matters to the sequence because the manufacturers, the hospitality programmes and the collectors treat it as the hinge between the Riviera and England, and because the weekend after it is Ascot's.
Royal Ascot is five days in the third week of June, Tuesday to Saturday, and it is the week the London season is at its most formal. The dress code of the Royal Enclosure is published and enforced. In most years Art Basel's preview days in Switzerland fall on the same Tuesday and Wednesday, which is the calendar's most direct conflict for the collector who also races: Basel's public days run Thursday to Sunday, so the practical answer has become Ascot's first two days and Basel's last three.
London and the fortnight
Wimbledon opens on the last Monday of June and the first week is the one with tickets; the second week is the one people travel for. Around it sit the Queen's Club tournament the week before, the Cartier Queen's Cup final at Windsor on a Sunday in mid-June, Henley's regatta in the first days of July and the Goodwood Festival of Speed the weekend after. By the time Wimbledon's finals weekend arrives the season has begun to leave London: Goodwood, the Cowdray Gold Cup and Glorious Goodwood stretch the English summer to the end of July, but the Mediterranean has already begun.
That is the shape of it. Six weeks, two countries, one coast, and a sequence in which every stop is the next stop's warm-up. The circuit page for the European Summer carries the dates for the coming year; the destination pages for Cannes, Monaco, Le Mans, London and Basel carry the practical geography.
