Three days of competitive skiing, snowboarding and snowmobiling on a purpose-built course at Buttermilk, and the loudest weekend of Aspen's winter.

For one long weekend in late January, Buttermilk - normally the gentlest of Aspen's four mountains and the one families learn on - is rebuilt into a superpipe, a slopestyle course and a big-air jump, with grandstands, a village of sponsor structures and a concert stage at the base. More than a hundred skiers and snowboarders compete in slopestyle, superpipe, big air and knuckle huck, alongside snowmobile freestyle and speed and style, and the whole thing is televised across three days and two evenings.
The atmosphere is unlike anything else in this calendar. The crowd is young, largely American, dressed for standing on snow at night, and there for the night sessions and the music as much as the competition. Athlete meet-and-greets, sponsor activations and live music run alongside the events at the base area. It is a sports broadcast staged as a festival, and it happens on a public ski mountain twenty minutes from the middle of Aspen.
Its future at Buttermilk is settled for now: Aspen Snowmass and X Games signed a three-year host agreement in June 2026 that runs through the 2028-29 winter, making Aspen one of the longest-running venue partnerships in action sports. What is changing is the competition itself - 2027 brings the first winter season of the team-based X Games League, with franchises drafting athletes at an event in Los Angeles in September 2026.
01Почему это важно
X Games is where snowboarding and freeskiing set their standards, and Aspen is the winter edition's home. Tricks are landed here first and named here, and the medal count carries more weight with the athletes than most World Cup results. Its second significance is commercial: it puts a young, national television audience on an Aspen mountain in the middle of a season otherwise defined by second homes and private clubs, which is not a combination the American winter offers anywhere else. In our reading it is the least formal fixture in the winter calendar and the most useful for understanding where the sport is going.
02Неделя вокруг мероприятия
Aspen in late January is already at full season strength, and X Games adds a distinctly different population on top of it: teams, broadcast crews, sponsors and a large day-visitor crowd from Denver and the Front Range. Buttermilk closes to general skiing while the course is built and used, which pushes everyone onto Aspen Mountain, Highlands and Snowmass - all of which stay open and are less crowded than usual during the competition. The town's own rhythm continues through it. The Wheeler Opera House and the Aspen Art Museum keep their programmes, the restaurants on Hyman and Hopkins take their usual reservations, and the free RFTA buses run the valley. What is public is most of it: the base area at Buttermilk with its music and activations, the competition itself, and the town in the evening. The night sessions, run under lights, are the part visitors remember.
03Когда прибыть
Arrive Thursday, leave Monday. Thursday and Friday are the quieter days and the easiest for parking and the shuttle; Saturday night is the peak session and the hardest to move around. If skiing is part of the trip, plan it for the mornings on Ajax or Highlands and go to Buttermilk in the afternoon and evening.
04Где остановиться
Downtown Aspen, within the core grid around Hyman and Galena, is the most useful base: the free shuttle to Buttermilk runs from there and the town is walkable. The base of Aspen Mountain, around the gondola plaza, is the same idea at a higher price - the Little Nell and the Jerome are the landmarks. Snowmass Village, twenty minutes down valley, is the family option with more supply. Basalt and Carbondale, thirty to fifty minutes down the Roaring Fork, are what most visitors on a budget actually use, connected by the valley bus. There is no accommodation at Buttermilk itself.
05Доступ и гостеприимство
Neither the X Games site nor the Aspen Snowmass event page published ticketing arrangements for 2027 when checked in September 2026, and the format is in transition, so nothing about admission is stated here - check both before travelling. What the resort does publish is the shape of the weekend: skiing, snowboarding and snowmobile competitions across big air, knuckle huck, superpipe and slopestyle, more than a hundred athletes, live music, athlete meet-and-greets and sponsor activations at the base. Aspen Snowmass also offers discounted private lessons at Buttermilk during the weekend under its Buttermilk Deluxe programme.
06Где происходит светская активность
The Buttermilk base village during the day and the night sessions; in town, the bars and restaurants along Hyman Avenue and Hopkins Avenue, the Hotel Jerome's lobby bar and the base of the Silver Queen gondola. Aspen's apres culture runs early and hard, and the X Games weekend concentrates it. Everything listed here is public; the hotel and brand programmes that run alongside are not.

09История
The first Winter X Games was held in 1997 at Snow Summit in Big Bear Lake, California, two years after the summer event began in Rhode Island. It moved between venues through its early years and settled at Buttermilk in 2002, where it has been staged every winter since. ESPN created and ran the property until late 2022, when it was sold to the private-equity firm MSP Sports Capital; coverage remained on ESPN and ABC. The most recent structural change is the X Games League, launched in 2026 with city-based franchises and a summer debut in Sacramento, extending to the winter discipline from January 2027.
10Кто присутствует
Action-sports fans in large numbers, skewing young and largely American; athletes, coaches and the equipment and apparel industry that supports them; broadcast and sponsor personnel; Front Range day visitors; and Aspen's own resident and second-home community, for whom this is the most public weekend of the winter. Considerably broader and less moneyed than the rest of the Aspen season.

| 2027 · Winter X Games 31 | · Winter X Games 31 | ОжидаетсяConfirmed for Buttermilk but not yet dated. Aspen Snowmass and X Games announced a three-year host agreement in June 2026 running through the 2028-29 winter, and the resort's event page describes 2027 as the twenty-sixth consecutive year at Buttermilk with dates 'coming soon'. The event has fallen on a weekend in the second half of January every year - 27-29 January 2023, 26-28 January 2024, 23-25 January 2025, 23-25 January 2026 - so a late-January 2027 weekend is the reasonable estimate. Note that 2027 also brings the first winter season of the team-based X Games League, whose draft is set for 16 September 2026 in Los Angeles, so the competition format may change. |
