Watches and Wonders Geneva is the week in which the watch industry shows the year's new products. Around sixty-five houses build stands inside Palexpo, the convention center beside Geneva airport — Rolex, Patek Philippe, Cartier, Audemars Piguet, A. Lange & Söhne, Hermès, Chanel and a long tail of independents among them — and for the first days the halls are open only to retailers, distributors, collectors invited by the brands and press. The fair then opens for a three-day public weekend, when anyone who buys a ticket can walk the same stands.

The structure is deliberate. Brands use the professional days to place a year of production with the retail network, which is the commercial purpose of the week and takes place in closed rooms upstairs rather than on the stands. The public weekend, added when the fair reorganized itself in the early 2020s, exists to convert an industry appointment into something closer to a consumer event, and it has succeeded: the 2025 edition drew 55,000 visitors, including nearly 1,600 journalists, which the organizer recorded as a record.

Outside Palexpo, the fair spills across the city. The organizer runs an 'In the City' program of workshops, exhibitions and open evenings that requires no fair ticket, and brands that do not exhibit at Palexpo take suites and private apartments across Geneva for the same week, so that the whole city functions as a trade fair for seven days. A visitor with no badge and no appointment can still see a great deal of what is new.

01Por qué es relevante

This is the week the watch industry's year is decided. Retail orders are placed, price lists are set, and the reception of a new reference here shapes production volumes and waiting lists for the following twelve months. Because Rolex and Patek Philippe both exhibit — which was not true for most of the fair's history — there is no longer a second event that matters in the same way, and Basel's rival fair, which for decades split the industry's calendar, has gone.

For collectors, it has become the single fixed appointment of the year. The public weekend gives ordinary buyers access to stands that used to be closed to them, and the auction houses, dealers and independent makers arrange their own Geneva programs around the same dates. In our reading, the fair's most consequential decision was opening those three days: it turned a supply-chain meeting into the industry's public moment, and every other watch event in the calendar now positions itself relative to it.

02La semana en torno al evento

Geneva in April is not a large city and the fair fills it. Hotel rates across the lake and the Rive Gauche reach their annual peak, restaurants take bookings weeks ahead, and the trams and taxis between the center and Palexpo run full from early morning. The rue du Rhône and the Grand-Rue in the old town, where the boutiques are, run extended hours and put on their own displays, and the department store windows and hotel lobbies are given over to watch installations.

The parallel program is substantial and much of it is open. Independent makers who cannot afford or do not want a Palexpo stand show in hotel suites and rented apartments; retailers hold evening events; auction house specialists come to view consignments. Anyone in Geneva that week without a fair badge will still find several days' worth of things to see, and the organizer's own In the City program is designed for exactly that visitor.

03Cuándo llegar

Trade visitors arrive Sunday evening for a Monday start and stay three or four nights. Everyone else should come for the public weekend: arrive Thursday, do the city program and the boutiques on Friday morning, and take the fair on Friday afternoon and Saturday, which is less crowded than Sunday. Leave Monday. Arriving mid-week without a professional badge is a wasted trip as far as Palexpo is concerned, though the city program runs throughout.

04Dónde alojarse

The Rive Droite, the right bank between the lake and the station, is where most of the industry stays — the grand hotels along the quai are the traditional addresses and are effectively fully booked by the brands during the fair. The Rive Gauche and the old town are quieter, better for eating, and closer to the boutiques on rue du Rhône. Le Grand-Saconnex and the airport district put you a few minutes from Palexpo and nowhere near anything else, which suits exhibitors and no one else.

The practical alternatives when Geneva sells out are Nyon and the Vaud lakeside toward Lausanne, twenty to forty minutes by train, and the French side around Annemasse and Ferney-Voltaire, which is cheaper and close to the airport. Regular attendees book a year ahead or rebook on departure.

05Acceso y hospitalidad

The fair operates two access regimes. The professional days are badge-only: retailers, distributors, press and brand-invited clients register in advance through the organizer or through a brand. The public weekend is ticketed and sold openly online, and covers the same halls and stands. In the City events are largely free and open, published by the organizer as a separate program. Brand hospitality inside the fair — the upstairs salons where orders are placed and clients are received — is entirely by invitation and is not sold at any price. Ticket prices for the public weekend were not verified for this record and none is quoted.

06Dónde tiene lugar la actividad social

Inside Palexpo the ground-floor stands and the central bar areas are where the week's conversation happens; the upstairs rooms are closed. In the city, the hotel bars along the right bank are the industry's evening meeting rooms and are open to anyone who can find a seat, the rue du Rhône boutiques hold evening receptions, and the restaurants of the old town and the Pâquis district take the overflow. The auction houses' Geneva offices and the independent makers' suites are the week's other centers, some open, some by appointment.

07Cómo llegar

Aviación comercialGeneva Airport (GVA) is directly adjacent to Palexpo — a covered walkway connects them — and is served across Europe and beyond. This is the closest airport-to-venue relationship of any major fair in the calendar.
FerroviarioGeneva is on the French TGV network from Paris in about three hours and on the Swiss network from Zurich, Basel and Milan. Geneva-Cornavin is the main station; Genève-Aéroport station is beside Palexpo. Swiss hotels issue free local transport cards to guests.
AutomóvilDriving is unnecessary and parking at Palexpo is limited and expensive during the fair. The autoroute from Lausanne and the French motorways both feed the airport area and congest at fair opening and closing times.
Aviación privadaGeneva is one of Europe's busiest business-aviation airports and slots and parking during fair week are among the tightest of the year; handlers require bookings far in advance and aircraft are frequently repositioned to Annecy, Chambéry or Lyon.
HelicópteroHelicopter transfers operate from the airport and from the French Alps; there is no separate city heliport.
MarinasGeneva's lakeside harbors are recreational. Arrival by water plays no part in the week.

08Aspectos prácticos

VestimentaBusiness dress on the professional days — the fair is a trade appointment and the stands are formal. The public weekend is smart casual and much more relaxed. Evenings in Geneva are jacket-and-no-tie rather than black tie, except for brand dinners, which are by invitation and dress as instructed. Comfortable shoes: the halls are enormous.
ClimaGeneva in April is variable — mild and bright in a good week, cold and wet in a bad one, with the Alps still under snow and the Bise wind capable of dropping the temperature sharply. Bring a coat. Almost the entire event is indoors. No station normals were sourced for this record.
Cómo desplazarseUse the train and the trams; Geneva's public transport is free to hotel guests and reaches Palexpo directly from Cornavin in about six minutes. Taxis are expensive and scarce at fair closing time. The airport walkway into Palexpo means a visitor can land and be inside the fair in a quarter of an hour.
HotelesThis is the tightest hotel week of the Geneva year and rates rise steeply. Brands block entire properties for their teams and clients, and the grand hotels are committed a year ahead. Anyone booking inside three months should expect to stay in Nyon, on the French side, or toward Lausanne.
RestaurantesCentral Geneva's better restaurants are fully booked from Monday to Friday during the fair, largely by brand dinners. Book weeks ahead or eat early. The Pâquis district and the Carouge quarter across the Arve are the reliable fallbacks and are better value.
Momento de la reservaHotels six to twelve months ahead, and returning trade visitors book on departure. Public weekend tickets go on sale in advance online and are generally available, though popular slots close. Restaurant tables three to four weeks ahead for the professional days.
EntradasProfessional days are accessible by registered badge only, arranged through the organizer or through an exhibiting brand. The three-day public weekend is ticketed and sold online to anyone. The In the City program of workshops, exhibitions and open evenings across Geneva is separate from the fair ticket and largely free. We did not verify current ticket prices and quote none.
HospitalidadBrand hospitality at the fair takes the form of private salons above the stands, used for client receptions and retail negotiations; access is by invitation from the house concerned and is not purchasable. The organizer does not sell a consumer hospitality tier of the kind sporting events run. Evening dinners and launches across the city during the week are similarly by invitation.

09Historia

The fair began in 1991 as the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie, an invitation-only counter-event created by Cartier and the houses that would become Richemont, held in Geneva in deliberate opposition to Basel's much larger and more commercial fair. For nearly thirty years it was a closed trade salon: no public, no tickets, appointments only.

The structure broke in the late 2010s. Swatch Group left Basel in 2018, Baselworld's exhibitor list collapsed, and in 2020 the Geneva salon renamed itself Watches and Wonders, initially as a digital event during the pandemic. Rolex, Patek Philippe, Chanel and others moved across, and the fair returned physically in 2022 with almost the whole industry present. In September 2022 a new body, the Watches and Wonders Geneva Foundation, was created to run it, founded by Rolex, Richemont and Patek Philippe, with Chanel, Hermès and LVMH joining its board in 2024. That governance change — a fair owned collectively by the largest houses rather than by one group — is what makes the present arrangement stable.

10Quién está ahí

Retailers and distributors from every market, who are the fair's commercial reason for existing; brand executives, watchmakers and designers; collectors invited by the houses; auction specialists and dealers; a very large press and online media contingent; and, on the public weekend, several tens of thousands of enthusiasts and general visitors, many of them Swiss and French but a substantial number traveling internationally for it.
